I modified my PC setup with a 15-in-1 docking station, and the benefits go beyond more ports

Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. Out of all the docking stations I’ve tested, the Baseus Spacemate RD1 Pro is one of the most unique, sporting features not commonly seen on other docks.  Also: I tested the best laptop docking stations – here’s what I recommend for your office setup It immediately distinguishes itself with an adjustable wireless charging pad on top and a small, high-resolution display on the front. What’s great is that these additions don’t feel like gimmicks; they deliver genuinely useful information for busy work setups, in addition to all the benefits of a high-end docking station. All the ports  The Spacemate RD1 Pro is a fairly large docking station with an extensive array of ports and controls: Front: 2 × USB-C (up to 100W PD) 2 × USB-A (5 Gbps) 240 x 240 display with control button (resolution TBD) Back: 2 × USB-C (10 Gbps) SD/TF card slot …

Google modified over 100 flights to cut climate-warming contrails

Google modified over 100 flights to cut climate-warming contrails

Contrails account for most of the warming effect from flights Tack/imageBROKER/Shutterstock A trial involving thousands of flights between the US and Europe has found that planes produce fewer contrails if they follow flight paths recommended by an artificial intelligence to reduce their global warming impact. The streaks of condensation triggered by soot particles produced by aircraft engines are thought to cause more warming than the carbon dioxide that planes emit. Research has also shown that some ice-rich regions of the upper atmosphere are more likely to form contrails when a plane passes through them, and that AI can predict where these regions will be using detailed weather forecasts. There have been small-scale trials showing that planes rerouted through these regions will produce fewer contrails, but the practice has yet to be applied to commercial flights at scale. Now, Dinesh Sanekommu at Google and his colleagues have used an AI contrail-forecasting tool to give routing advice in a randomised control trial of more than 2400 real American Airlines flights. The trial involved flights heading eastward from …

Did Hubble’s new “dark galaxy” kill modified gravity?

Did Hubble’s new “dark galaxy” kill modified gravity?

One of the most puzzling facets of our Universe is the apparent need for a new form of mass in our cosmos that isn’t made up of any of the particles we know of: dark matter. Whereas we’re fully aware of the full suite of Standard Model particles — quarks, charged leptons, neutrinos, their antiparticles, plus the photon, the gluons, the W-and-Z bosons, and the Higgs boson — dark matter must be composed of something else entirely: something novel and not yet directly detected. In order to explain the cosmic structures we see, from the CMB to individual galaxies to galaxy clusters and even the grand cosmic web, dark matter must not only be present, but must dominate the total matter content of the Universe. However, there are several puzzles that arise. If dark matter is real, and if it dominates the matter content of the Universe, then there should be large numbers of satellite galaxies, small and low-mass collections of a few stars but mostly dark matter, all throughout intergalactic space. When those galaxies …

Grok’s Deepfake Capacities Modified Following Pushback

Grok’s Deepfake Capacities Modified Following Pushback

Grok, X’s AI program, came under fire when its users began creating explicit images and videos of real people. AI-generated deepfakes began to abound until finally, X took action to modify the AI bot’s capabilities. According to X’s Safety account: We have implemented technological measures to prevent the Grok account from allowing the editing of images of real people in revealing clothing such as bikinis. This restriction applies to all users, including paid subscribers. Additionally, image creation and the ability to edit images via the Grok account on the X platform are now only available to paid subscribers. This adds an extra layer of protection by helping to ensure that individuals who attempt to abuse the Grok account to violate Read More › Source Source link

How genetically modified stem cells could repair the brain after a stroke

How genetically modified stem cells could repair the brain after a stroke

Every year, millions of lives are suddenly, swiftly transformed by a stroke, which occurs when a blood vessel travelling towards the brain becomes obstructed, causing neurons to die off. Strokes are among the leading causes of disability in adults, and it is estimated that one in six people will suffer one at some point in their lives. The human brain is by far the most complex organ in our bodies. Its sophisticated cellular architecture and neural networks give us language, memory and abstract reasoning. But this complexity comes at a cost, as brain tissue has a very limited ability to regenerate. Unlike skin or liver tissue, neurons that die are rarely replaced. This is why brain injuries are the root cause of so many age-related diseases. One of the most serious and common of these is ischaemic stroke, caused by the interruption of blood flow to an area of the brain. Although advances in emergency treatment have improved survival rates, there is currently no therapy capable of repairing the neuronal damage caused by a stroke. …
