Le Monde CEO urges publishers to sign AI partnerships

Louis Dreyfus, CEO of Le Monde. Picture: Delporte Publishers should be signing AI licensing deals to ensure “strong competition” in journalism, according to Le Monde chief executive Louis Dreyfus. The French daily newspaper and website has seen a “significant amount of new revenue” including via conversions to paid subscriptions after signing three AI partnership agreements. Le Monde shares 25% of revenue from its licensing deals with OpenAI, Perplexity and Meta with its staff journalists. Publishers are currently split between suing AI firms and signing deals, as tracked by Press Gazette since 2023. Le Monde signed a multi-year agreement with OpenAI in March 2024, the first for a French media organisation. The deal brings in “significant” revenue for Le Monde in exchange for its content being used both for training and in response to prompts in ChatGPT. This was followed by a partnership agreement with Perplexity in May 2025, which allows the use of Le Monde’s content to generate answers in response to questions but does not include training. Then in December Le Monde was among …

After a Russian airstrike in Kyiv, July 31, 2025. JEDRZEJ NOWICKI Jedrzej Nowicki: 5:16 am, July 31, 2025. A summer day is breaking over Kyiv. In front of a khrushchevka [a type of brick apartment building that became common in the former Soviet Union in the early 1960s], a man stands with a bandaged head trickling blood. A smoldering cigarette butt hangs from the corner of his mouth. His gaze is lost in the distance as he clutches an old stool to his chest. Is this all that remains of his life? Behind him, flames are engulfing his apartment. Scenes like this are no longer rare in Kyiv. In 2025, Russian attacks on the capital intensified significantly. According to United24 [a platform managed by the Ukrainian government], Russia used more than 60,000 guided aerial bombs against Ukraine, over 2,000 missiles and more than 100,000 drones. Air raid sirens have sounded at least 19,000 times. Only four days throughout the entire year have passed without a Russian airstrike. More than 2,500 civilians have been killed and …

The young Ukrainian woman thought that a building nearby had collapsed, when a second blast shattered the silence. Kateryna stiffens. A third followed almost immediately. Panicked, the mother got up and checked her phone. The news was already everywhere: Russia had just invaded Ukraine. Kateryna was living at the time in an apartment with her husband, Oleksandr Shykula, 33, on the eighth floor of a brand new, bright building decorated with large mirrors. Air raid sirens wailed in the sky. The young woman went to shelter in the corridor with her son. The family stayed there …

French Police Search Institut du Monde Arabe

French police raided the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris on Monday as part of an investigation into its former president, ex–culture minister Jack Lang, who resigned earlier this month amid scrutiny over his past ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The cultural institution was one of several premises searched, France’s National Financial Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement. Earlier this month, prosecutors opened a preliminary investigation into Lang and his daughter, Caroline, on suspicion of aggravated tax fraud and money laundering after their names appeared among hundreds of public figures listed in newly released Jeffrey Epstein files. Related Articles Both have repeatedly denied any involvement in Epstein’s criminal network. Their lawyer, Laurent Merlet, told the French broadcaster BFMTV that “there was no movement of funds,” according to Reuters. Paris prosecutors have assembled a dedicated team to analyze millions of documents from the Epstein files in coordination with the National Financial Prosecutor’s Office and national police. The institute, which is overseen by France’s Foreign Ministry, declined to comment on the police action. Lang, who …

Legendre, 46, was selected by the institute’s board on Tuesday morning. Her appointment is expected to be ratified by the high council made up of representatives from the 22 member states of the Arab League. She joined the Elysée’s diplomatic team in December 2023 after serving for just over two years as spokesperson for France’s foreign ministry. Before that, she …
