From Novel to Movie Adaptation

[The story contains spoilers from the Victorian Psycho book by Virginia Feito.] “In three months, everyone in this house will be dead.” In her novel Victorian Psycho, author Virginia Feito is anything but subtle as she warns readers the story they’re about to embark on may not be for the faint of heart. The novel, set in the Victorian era, centers on Winifred Notty who becomes the new governess for the wealthy Pounds family, tasked with watching over the children. However, danger is lurking for the family as Winifred is a psychopath with an intent for revenge. Writing as a way to give a “fun wink” to her “favorite literary psychopath” in American Psycho, Feito blends dark humor with gothic horror in her “over the top” tale centered on “revenge against the patriarchy.” “The humor part of it was selfishly for me to get through the guts and violence of it,” Feito says of writing the gruesome elements of the story. “A lot of it was because I really felt it was important for her as …

Is ‘Terminator 2’ the best summer movie ever? Plus the week’s best films

Is ‘Terminator 2’ the best summer movie ever? Plus the week’s best films

Hello! I’m Mark Olsen. Welcome to another edition of your regular field guide to a world of Only Good Movies. There are, it goes without saying, a lot of movies out there. And so even for someone like myself, whose job is just to stay on top of them, sometime a title slips by. I had not taken much notice of “Is God Is” before it opened last week without playing any festivals in advance, but the reviews and conversation around it grabbed my interest. Once I realized that Tessa Thompson and Janicza Bravo were involved as producers, I made sure to carve out time to see the movie this week. And am I ever glad I did. The debut as writer-director for Aleshea Harris (adapting her own play), “Is God Is” is among the most exciting movies released so far this year. Kara Young and Mallori Johnson are absolutely electric as twin sisters who set out to find the estranged, abusive father who abandoned them after leaving them and their mother horribly scarred in …

‘28 Years Later Part 3’ Could Be the Zombie Movie of the Century—If It Actually Gets Made

‘28 Years Later Part 3’ Could Be the Zombie Movie of the Century—If It Actually Gets Made

After more than two decades, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland finally reunited for 28 Years Later, the long-awaited third sequel in the 28 Days Later franchise last year. From the outset, the expressed plan was for a trilogy: three movies, beginning with 28 Years Later and The Bone Temple, that would tell the story of Spike (Alfie Williams), the young protagonist who we’ve watched come of age against the backdrop of rage-virus-infected England. And in the next installment, Cillian Murphy would reprise his role as original series lead Jim, apparently still stuck in the quarantined UK, almost thirty years after he woke up in that hospital in a deserted London. It was all setting up a horror blockbuster at a scale we’ve seldom seen in the streaming age. After all, how many genre movies boast the name of a recent Oscar winner on the poster? Such was teased in the prologue of The Bone Temple, when we finally see Murphy on screen again: Jim now lives in an isolated cottage with his teenage …

Filmmaker John Ottman secured the life rights of Mazur, as well as Joel’s longtime friend Jon Small, for a forthcoming feature titled Billy & Me, which Ottman will direct. However, in a statement shared Tuesday with Variety, a representative for Joel said: “Since 2021, the parties involved have been officially notified that they do not possess Billy Joel’s life rights and will not be able to secure the music rights required for this project. “Billy Joel has not authorized or supported this project in any capacity, and any attempt to move forward without it would be both legally and professionally misguided.” The film’s screenwriter, Adam Ripp, responded to Joel in The Hollywood Reporter, saying: “At no point have …

The Mandalorian And Grogu Reviews: Pedro Pascal’s Star Wars Movie Branded ‘Dull’

The Mandalorian And Grogu Reviews: Pedro Pascal’s Star Wars Movie Branded ‘Dull’

The TV spin-off The Mandalorian has proved to be one of the most popular Star Wars properties in recent memory – but unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to have carried over to the series’ new big-screen iteration. Later this week, the new film The Mandalorian And Grogu will hit cinemas, with critics who’ve already seen the film – which stars Pedro Pascal alongside new additions Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White – not exactly enamoured with the new addition to the Star Wars lore. More scathing reviews for the film have branded it “dull”, “average” and not worthy of the Star Wars moniker, while even the more glowing takes have acknowledged its issues. Here’s a selection of what’s been said about The Mandalorian And Grogu so far… “[The Mandalorian And Grogu] makes the magic of A New Hope seem far, far away […] At the end of the day, TM&G [The Mandalorian And Grogu] is what it is, and the fanbase will show up for it, much like they did last time. But for how much …
