6 actors who refused to film iconic scenes and changed movie history

From harmonicas in The Shawshank Redemption to refusals to cry in Air Force One, some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters may have looked extremely different without the alterations of certain actors on set.  Despite what was penned into scripts, the final edit in these films was changed by stars unwilling to perform specific acts in some of movie history’s most iconic scenes.  Jessica Alba’s aversion to swimming with sharks and Viggo Mortensen’s absence from The Hobbit make it onto the list of changeable shifts experienced by A-list directors.  Here are six of the most instrumental alterations made by stars after they refused to act out the screenplays given to them… © picture alliance via Getty Image Glenn Close During Glenn Close’s portrayal of Vice President Kathryn Bennett in Air Force One, the star refused to film a scene where her character broke down in tears in front of her colleagues.  The moment was supposed to take place in the White House Situation Room after the titular aircraft is hijacked with President James Marshall, played by Harrison Ford, …

Heidi Gardner, William H. Macy to Star in ‘The Swimming Lesson’ Movie

Heidi Gardner, William H. Macy to Star in ‘The Swimming Lesson’ Movie

Heidi Gardner and William H. Macy are ready to make a splash with their forthcoming dramedy feature. Gardner and Macy are set to star in the indie film The Swimming Lesson from writer-director Casey Twenter, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Production is scheduled to begin this summer in Gardner’s hometown of Kansas City. The Swimming Lesson centers on Tay (Gardner), a single mother who leaves behind her complicated life in Los Angeles to return to her childhood home. She winds up embroiled in a custody battle over son Albee, an autistic child who is obsessed with the ocean but terrified of swimming. Macy co-stars as Leonard, Tay’s foul-mouthed father whose blunt nature can sometimes disguise the fact that he remains loyal to his daughter and grandson. Making his solo directorial feature debut, Twenter helmed the project from a script he co-wrote with Jeff Robison. Twenter and Robison previously co-wrote the 2014 drama Rudderless, which marked Macy’s directorial debut and landed distribution after premiering at Sundance. The Swimming Lesson’s producers include Dan Koetting for KP’s Remain …

Ron Howard Made an Avedon Movie, So Graydon Carter Threw a Yacht Party

Ron Howard Made an Avedon Movie, So Graydon Carter Threw a Yacht Party

Michael Avedon, meanwhile, who has followed in his grandfather’s footsteps as a New York–based photographer, stepped off the tender in black jeans and black Lucchese snakeskin cowboy boots. He was also, remarkably, the only person on the boat who I saw go for a swim. “Want to come on a tour?” I asked, as I headed off with one of the Renaissance’s crew members to investigate the boat’s seven floors. He called something back about finding Poseidon and ripped off his shirt. The Renaissance, which sleeps 36 people, is a marble shrine to excess. It holds two spa rooms, a hair salon, hot and cold plunge pools, a steam room and sauna, a full gym, a hot tub that could rival in scale Tilikum’s tank at SeaWorld, and a helipad (which can transform into a basketball court at warp speed) at its bow. And that’s only one of the seven decks. The Avedon grandchildren: Matthew, Caroline, and Michael. Daniel Paik Downstairs, Howard, in his signature baseball cap and casual short-sleeved button-down, chatted with Carter over …

Kiyoshi Kurosawa Has Finally Made His Samurai Movie

Kiyoshi Kurosawa Has Finally Made His Samurai Movie

If there’s a great crime of recent world cinema, it’s that Kiyoshi Kurosawa hasn’t been granted bigger budgets. The 70-year-old Japanese auteur has consistently spun masterful moviemaking from a relative shoestring over the four and a half decades of his prolific and deeply influential career. Kurosawa has explored genres with a restlessness and inventiveness few directors of his generation can match: from the now-classic serial killer procedural Cure (1997) to the dread-soaked J-horror landmark Pulse (2001), the lacerating family drama Tokyo Sonata (Cannes’ Un Certain Regard Jury Prize winner of 2008), the haunting wartime mystery Wife of a Spy (best director at Venice in 2020), and most recently Cloud, the psychological action film that landed on numerous critics’ 2025 best-of lists. In nearly every case, he has worked on production budgets that would barely cover the catering costs on a Hollywood feature of comparable ambition. Kurosawa came of age during an era of sharp contraction for the Japanese film business, after the rise of television had eroded the dominance of the country’s once-fabled movie studios. …

Joan Collins, 92, unveils striking hair transformation in sneak peek at new movie role

Dame Joan Collins never fails to inspire when it comes to showstopping glamour, and the Dynasty actress has caught fans’ attention once again with a hair transformation in her latest post on social media. The iconic actress, who made a dazzling appearance at the 79th annual Cannes Film Festival earlier this week, took to Instagram on Saturday to share behind-the-scenes snaps from her upcoming film, The Bitter End (also referred to as The Duchess and I). The 92-year-old shared a series of four pictures, each featuring one of her co-stars. In the first, she donned a matching pink cutout co-ord alongside her co-star Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet), as well as a crisp white top and jacket while posing with a suited-up Charles Dance (Game of Thrones). Meanwhile, she cooled herself down with a fan alongside French actor Laurent Lafitte (The Richest Woman in the World), while in the final snap, she posed next to a prim-looking pug named Junior. She captioned the post: “I adored working on the set and having fun off the set …

Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver Movie

Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver Movie

James Gray’s Paper Tiger, the biggest American film in this year’s Hollywood-lite Cannes Film Festival, debuted on Saturday night to a spirited, six-minute standing ovation. Paper Tiger follows Hester and Irwin, played by Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller, respectively, who are raising a family in 1980s Queens, when Irwin’s flashy brother (Adam Driver) sells him on a moneymaking endeavor that leaves them in the crosshairs of the Russian mob. “To be very pretentious about it, the intention was to try to make a very classical drama,” Gray told The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the film’s premiere. “People sometimes shit on that idea, ‘classical’ — they equate it with ‘old-fashioned,’ but the two are not the same thing. Internal conflict, struggle, love, emotion — that is never old-fashioned.” Johansson told THR, “It had so many elements that I loved. It’s a big story inside of a small story.” Of her character, a stay-at-home mom who’s determined to fight for more but faces fewer options when tragic news sets in, Johansson said, “I liked the idea of …

Sam Raimi Direct Remake Ventriloquist Horror movie Magic

Sam Raimi Direct Remake Ventriloquist Horror movie Magic

Sam Raimi has settled on his next directing effort. As his follow-up to Send Help, his twisty survival thriller released by 20th Century/Disney earlier this year, Raimi will direct Magic, Lionsgate’s remake of the 1978 cult horror classic that featured Anthony Hopkins as a mentally unstable ventriloquist. Raimi was already on board as producing the remake, having set it at the company last year. Also producing are Roy Lee as well as Chris Hammond and Tim Sullivan, the latter two who long championed the project and guided its development by tracking down the original rights. Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, who wrote Send Help for Raimi and who previously penned Freddy vs. Jason and the remake of Friday the 13th, wrote the script for Magic. Magic starred Hopkins as Corky, a magician who reaches fame alongside his ventriloquist’s dummy, the obnoxious and wisecracking Fats. Faced with the prospect of signing a network deal for his own show, but afraid of revealing his fragile mental state, the magician takes off for the Catskills, where he tries to reconnect with a high school love, even as …
