Push for $40 smartphones builds momentum, but still faces cost hurdles

A push by a coalition of telecom operators, device makers, and industry groups to bring $40 smartphones to market — a price point seen as key to getting tens of millions more people online — is gathering momentum, but questions remain over whether manufacturers can produce such ultra-low-cost devices at scale. This week at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the advocacy and lobbying group GSMA said it is working with major African mobile operators — including Airtel, Axian Telecom, Ethio Telecom, MTN Group, Orange, and Vodafone — and smartphone makers to pilot ultra-low-cost 4G devices in six African markets: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda, in a bid to make smartphones more affordable and bring an additional 20 million people online. Affordable smartphones are widely seen as key to narrowing the digital divide in developing markets, where millions of people live within mobile broadband coverage but remain offline, often because internet-enabled devices remain too expensive. Through its Handset Affordability Coalition, the GSMA is working with operators and manufacturers to …

Honor launches its new slim foldable Magic V6 with a 6,600 mAh battery

Honor launched its new foldable, the Honor Magic V6, with a massive 6,600 mAh battery and a new sturdy hinge ahead of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. The Chinese company has been obsessed with proving that it makes the thinnest foldables. This year’s version is 4mm thick when unfolded and 8.75 mm thick when folded. Compared to last year’s Magic V5, which was 4.1 mm thick when unfolded and 8.8 mm thick when folded. We are talking very thin shavings here, but that helps the company make those claims. The battery is possibly one of the most impressive parts of the phone. The Honor Magic V6 has a 6,600 mAh battery, up from 5,820 mAh last year. Using Honor’s SuperCharge tech, the phone can charge at 80W through a wired connection, and at 66W wirelessly. What’s more, Honor also showed a new Silicon-carbon battery tech with 32% silicon density that could push foldable phone battery over 7,000 mAh. The new device has a 7.95-inch main AMOLED display with 2352 x 2172 pixel resolution …

The phone also has a 50 MP ultrawide camera with an f/2.2 aperture. Xiaomi’s Rumored ‘iOS Bridge’ to Bring Better Apple Device Connectivity

Xiaomi will introduce a new software update at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) that will reportedly improve connectivity between its own devices and Apple products. Alongside the debut of the Xiaomi 17 series, its HyperOS 3.1 update is said to include a new “iOS Bridge” for smoother connectivity between the two platforms. According to GizChina, the features tipped include the following: iPhone call alerts: Incoming calls on an iPhone that appear on connected Xiaomi tablets and PCs, allowing users to answer or manage calls without having the iPhone in their hand. Enhanced AirPods integration: AirPods to integrate better with Xiaomi devices, showing battery levels and offering enhanced controls, similar to how they work with Apple devices. Direct file sharing between iPhone and Xiaomi: A fast, wireless transfer feature enabling file sharing between iPhones and Xiaomi devices without relying on third-party apps. If the features do drop in Barcelona during MWC, which runs from March 2 to March 5, it’ll be another notable win for people who own an iPhone and AirPods as well as …
