‘Tremendous prosperity’ in Indo-Pacific, but middle powers must work together: New Zealand PM Luxon

PIONEERING NEW TRADE ARCHITECTURE  Mr Luxon pointed to a newly signed supply chain resilience pact between New Zealand and Singapore as an example of how such cooperation can take shape. The agreement – the world’s first legally binding bilateral deal to ensure the flow of essential supplies during crises – was inked in Singapore on Monday.  “In the event of a crisis, New Zealand will provide Singapore with food, and Singapore will provide New Zealand with fuel,” said Mr Luxon, who witnessed the signing alongside Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.  New Zealand currently receives about 30 per cent of its fuel through Singapore’s refineries, while Singapore relies heavily on food imports.  “This is a good way in which two complementary economies can support each other and have each other’s back in times of crises,” Mr Luxon noted.  “This is an example of where Singapore and New Zealand pioneer and develop new trade architecture together. We could model out and remake the case for multilateralism.”  He added that such arrangements could be expanded further, as both …

New Zealand’s kiwi bird returns to Wellington hills after a century-long absence

New Zealand’s kiwi bird returns to Wellington hills after a century-long absence

The kiwi, New Zealand’s sacred national bird, vanished from the hills around Wellington more than a century ago. Now the capital’s residents are waging an unlikely citizen campaign to return the endangered flightless birds to the city. “They are a part of who we are and our sense of belonging here,” said Paul Ward, founder of the Capital Kiwi Project, a charitable trust. “But they’ve been gone from these hills for well over a century and we decided as Wellingtonians that wasn’t right.” A staff member of a conservation organisation carries a kiwi bird during an event at Parliament in Wellington, New Zealand, on April 28, 2026. © Charlotte Graham-McLay, AP On a hill wreathed in mist above the dark sea that runs between New Zealand’s North and South Islands, Ward and others crossed rugged farmland late on Tuesday night, carrying seven crates in silence by dim red torchlight. Inside each one nestled a kiwi, including the 250th bird relocated to Wellington since the Capital Kiwi Project began. The kiwi gives New Zealanders the name …

Poll Shows Falling Support for New Zealand National Party and Prime Minister Luxon

WELLINGTON, April 20 (Reuters) – A newly released poll showed support has fallen further for New Zealand’s ruling National Party and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, as he ‌continues to face questions ‌over whether he can retain his party’s backing to stay in the top job. Luxon has been facing questions in recent days about whether he has the support of his party to remain as prime minister. The New Zealand Herald reported on Friday that members of his National Party will move against him this week, although it is unlikely to be a formal challenge or confidence vote initially.  Luxon told Radio New Zealand on Monday that he had the full support of National’s members of parliament and would remain as prime minister. In a 1News Verian poll released late on Sunday, support for the National Party fell 4 percentage points to 30% and indicated that if the election were held today, the current coalition government would not win sufficient seats to retain power. ‘Payment expected within seven days’: New Zealand doctor invoices US embassy for rising petrol costs

‘Payment expected within seven days’: New Zealand doctor invoices US embassy for rising petrol costs

A New Zealand doctor has asked the US embassy in Wellington to reimburse his clinic for petrol costs, saying Donald Trump and his administration started an “avoidable war” and should foot the bill for rising fuel prices. Dr Shane Dunphy, of Onslow medical centre in New Zealand’s capital, requested the US embassy pay his centre NZ$2,790.95 (US$1,597) for the cost of petrol vouchers provided to staff to help pay for transport. In a letter sent with the invoice, Dunphy said his staff were struggling to afford petrol because of the energy crisis triggered by the US-Israeli attacks on Iran. Related: Manila’s transport workers struggle to make ends meet as Philippines feels force of oil crisis The clinic had provided the vouchers to staff so they could afford to come to work and feed their families, he said. “We now ask that the USA reimburse us the cost of these vouchers. The USA is responsible for this and therefore should be held accountable.” New Zealand is particularly exposed to the energy crisis caused by the conflict, …
