A key member of the Kremlin has warned a European capital would “disappear” if the country launches military action against Russia in an apparent nuclear strike threat. Russian Presidential aide Nikolai Patrushev said if Warsaw started military operations against Russia, Poland could soon cease to exist as a state “in a few days,” Russian newspaper Izvestia reported. According to the newspaper, Patrushev said: “If Poland enters into military operations against Russia, our country will use the entire arsenal of its available forces and means, and Polish statehood will cease to exist in 2-3 days.” These comments came after the recent Russian drone attack on a railway line in western Ukraine, which hit a train near the Polish border. Former PM Boris Johnson was travelling towards Poland after attending a security conference in Kyiv when the incident occurred. He is understood to have escaped unharmed. Ten years on from its powerful debut, Lucy Kirkwood’s clever and funny play feels just as potent – if not more so. There’s so much to admire and enjoy here: Kirkwood’s skilful and layered writing; Rachel O’Riordan’s precise and thoughtful direction; Gary McCann’s striking design and, above all, a trio of richly nuanced performances from three brilliant older actors: Meera Syal, Declan Conlon and Kerry Fox. This week there’s been more mainstream reporting and chatter centered on Iran’s Pickaxe Mountain. The nuclear development site has been of special interest and focus to the Trump administration due to how immensely fortified it is, meaning the Iranians can conduct uranium enrichment activities deep under the mountain if they so desire. The US and IAEA are essentially operating blind on this, and that’s exactly how the Iranians want it of course. A Thursday Bloomberg report begins: “The United Nations atomic watchdog said it’s observed construction activity at Iran’s Pickaxe Mountain, a heavily-fortified site suspected of housing nuclear-related activities.” Vantor/Reuters It should be noted that Tehran has long complained that IAEA officials have leaked sensitive information to Israeli spies and leaders. For decades, Sweden has fostered a self-image as something of a world record-holder for peace, celebrating more than two centuries since it was last at war. But this record involves some creative accounting. The narrative, for example, excludes Sweden’s participation in modern-day military operations in Afghanistan and Libya. Nor has Swedish “peacefulness” been entirely pacifist. The country operated one of the world’s largest air forces during the cold war, for example. But less well known is how far Sweden progressed towards developing nuclear weapons of its own. Despite never producing a bomb, the history of its unrealised nuclear weapons programme offers important insights for understanding security policy today. Back in 1945, just months after the US had dropped nuclear bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Swedish military researchers began investigating this new weapon. The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has closed a loan of up to $1.9bn to NextEra Energy to support the restart of the Duane Arnold nuclear plant in Linn County, Iowa. The funding will help bring the facility, which shut down in 2020, back into operation and restore 615 megawatts (MW) of nuclear generation to the regional electricity grid. If the Nuclear Regulatory Commission approves the required licensing, the restart could provide enough reliable electricity to serve almost 500,000 homes, while creating nearly 1,500 construction jobs and more than 450 permanent operational positions. US Deputy Secretary of Energy James P. The DOE’s National Reactor Innovation Center announced 12 companies covering 13 projects for its latest Nuclear Energy Launch Pad (NELP) round on August 24th. Similar to the project coverage from the first round, this new group also spans multiple stages of the nuclear industry.  As we covered when the first four companies were selected, the initial group included the uranium enrichment company General Matter and reactor developers Radiant, Deployable Energy and NuCube Energy. Multiple companies are seeing repeat entries into the fast-track nuclear development programs under the DOE: Oklo, Antares, and Valar are all returning after achieving criticality on their pilot reactor designs under the DOE’s Reactor Pilot Program Deployable Energy is returning with two programs after also being included in the initial NELP selection round. The NELP offers access to nuclear expertise and infrastructure with a prioritized pathway through DOE authorization.
