Fermi, the AI nuclear power firm, has named a new CEO more than three months after firing co-founder Toby Neugebauer from the top executive post. Fermi said Wednesday it has hired Lee McIntire, an independent member of the company’s board who has held chief executive positions at CH2M Hill and TerraPower, the nuclear power startup founded by Bill Gates. Fermi America, which was co-founded by former U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry, is developing an AI campus in Amarillo, Texas, called Project Matador that will eventually use nuclear reactors to power data centers. The announcement, along with Monday’s news that it had signed TensorWave as its first binding customer lease for its Project Matador campus, provided a welcome boost to Fermi’s stock. (The stock is up nearly 23% since Monday.) The young company took a hit in April when Neugebauer and CFO Miles Everson were pushed out of the company. Via Middle East Eye Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeated an alleged quote attributed to a senior Iranian commander about Tehran’s determination to develop nuclear weapons, even though the statement had no identified primary source and was later traced to an Indian pro-Israel account on X. An investigation by Israeli news outlet Ynet and New York Times journalist Ronen Bergman found that Netanyahu used the alleged quote, attributed to Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) chief Ahmad Vahidi, in an official address to warn Israelis about Iran’s nuclear plans. Ynet’s investigation traced the source of Netanyahu’s remarks to Ritika, an Indian Hindu-nationalist and pro-Israel X account, which posted the alleged quote on 5 August. Donald Trump is taking a wait-and-see approach to Iran as negotiations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and permanently end the war appear to have once again stalled following reports that the president is reportedly considering walking away from the conflict without securing a nuclear deal. “We are low keying it,” Trump told Axios on Sunday, claiming the U.S. strategy will eventually “work out.” “We are only semi-negotiating with them,” he added. “We are just watching Iran with its huge inflation and the fact they have no money.” The apparent chill from the U.S. comes despite the president’s repeated insistence a deal is near and Iran is desperate for an off-ramp. But past the seesaws and swing sets, carved into a hill, is a thick blast-proof door that, when opened, exposes a narrow, well-lit tunnel that gently descends as far as the eye can see. After a study to map its sprawling network of rooms commenced in 2022, a nuclear bunker in northern Italy will transform into a Cold War museum scheduled to open in part next year. As reported in The Art Newspaper, the bunker—built between 1960 and 1966 in the town of Affi near Verona—was “engineered to withstand nuclear, chemical and biological attacks and was equipped with filtration systems, protected shower areas, kitchens, water tanks and dormitories. It was designed to sustain 300 personnel for 30 days in the event of a nuclear emergency.” Related Articles The site, measuring close to 140,000 square feet, includes some 100 rooms connected by a network of tunnels more than a half-mile long. “As well as the war room and communications centres, the site contains a gym, a bar and mechanics’ workshops, where walls are still plastered with erotic posters left behind by military staff,” according to TAN. Oklo’s Groves Isotope Test Reactor has successfully achieved criticality under the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Reactor Pilot Program, marking another milestone for advanced nuclear technology in the United States. The achievement was announced after testing at Oklo’s facility in Lockhart, Texas. It makes the Groves Isotope Test Reactor the fifth DOE-authorised advanced reactor to reach criticality this summer, highlighting the accelerating pace of next-generation reactor development. The successful demonstration will provide operational data to support the design of a future commercial reactor capable of producing critical isotopes for healthcare, advanced manufacturing, scientific research, space missions and national security applications.
