Survey reveals three quarters of fans oppose use of VAR – as majority believe it has killed joy of Premier League | UK News

The use of VAR is opposed by 75% of Premier League fans, a survey has revealed. The poll of nearly 8,000 supporters, just over half of whom attend more than 15 home games a season, found that more than 97% disagreed that VAR makes watching football more enjoyable. Over 90% opposed the statement that it had made the match-going experience better, while 75.71% said they did not support its use, and more than 70% disagreed that it has improved the accuracy of refereeing decisions. A big source of frustration was the length of the wait for a verdict, with fewer than 3% of those asked agreeing that decisions happened within a reasonable timeframe. More than 90% feel the technology has also removed the spontaneous joy of goal celebrations. The Football Supporters’ Association (FSA), which conducted …

UK Protesters March in London to Oppose the Rise of Political Right

LONDON, March 28 (Reuters) – Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets of central London on Saturday for a “March to Stop ‌the Far Right” with ‌many demonstrators decrying the right-wing Reform UK party of Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage, which is topping opinion polls. Backed by trade unions and civil society groups, the Together Alliance demonstration was attended by an estimated 50,000 people, according to police officials cited by UK media. As well as placards opposing Reform UK and its anti-immigration stance, some Iranian flags were held aloft along with pro-Palestinian flags and banners.  Reform leads the Labour Party of Prime Minister Keir Starmer as well as the other traditional British political parties, according to opinion polls. Zach Polanski, leader of the Green Party, which is also challenging Labour, joined Saturday’s march. London’s Metropolitan Police said 25 arrests were made in connection with the demonstration and another pro-Palestinian protest, which also took place on Saturday. Oppose Book Bans, Read Trans Historical Fiction

I started writing about—and reading—a lot more historical fiction when I saw how it could be used to reveal aspects of history that are ignored or forgotten. Stories of queer people throughout history are a form of past and present protest and determination; they say we are here, we’ve always been here, and we’ll always be here. That continues to be important in a time when the United States government takes part in increasing attacks on LGBTQ, and especially trans, people in this country. We’re talking about a government that forced the National Parks Service to erase all mentions of transgender people from a webpage about the 1969 Stonewall Rebellion in New York City, a movement that was literally led by trans women like Marsha P. Johnson. We’re talking about a country where the state of Kansas recently revoked the driver’s licenses and birth certificates of 1,700 residents …

Senate Democrats oppose SAVE America Act ahead of Republican vote

Mike Lee (R-UT) speaking at a “Only Citizens Vote” bus tour rally on passing the SAVE Act at Upper Senate Park outside the U.S. Capitol on September 10, 2025 in Washington, DC. Kent Nishimura | Getty Images News | Getty Images As Senate Republicans prepare to vote on the SAVE America Act this week, Democrats remain opposed to the voter-ID legislation strongly backed by President Donald Trump. While House Republicans in February passed one version of the bill, mostly along party lines, they still need 60 votes in the Senate to bypass the filibuster. With only a 53-47 majority, Senate Republicans can’t advance the legislation without upper chamber Democratic support, unless lawmakers change the filibuster rule. Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., on Thursday said he would bring the legislation to the floor for a vote this week to “put Democrats on the record.” With multiple versions of the legislation circulating, it’s unclear which one Thune may bring to the Senate floor for a vote next week. “We don’t yet …

SEND: ‘Little surprise’ lawyers oppose reform

SEND: ‘Little surprise’ lawyers oppose reform

The education secretary is unsurprised by criticism of proposed SEND reforms from “vested interests” and lawyers who profit from “exploiting parents”. The government’s plans will aim to educate more pupils in mainstream schools. The current SEND system is fraught with bureaucracy and often forces parents to turn to lawyers for help in securing education, health and care plans for their child. Under the new system, schools will have to draw up individual support plans for children, with EHCPs reserved for only the most “complex needs”. During a press conference at the ASCL leaders’ union annual conference this morning, Bridget Phillipson was asked if her reforms would see fewer lawyers involved in the process. “It’s been little surprise to me that there’s been such vociferous criticism from lawyers about the changes that we’re bringing,” the education secretary said. “They’ve got a vested interest in maintaining the failed status quo. There’s profit to be made. They want the system to remain as it is, because they make a profit, often out of exploiting parents.” ‘Fundamentally unfair’ She …

Christians will (and do) oppose civil authorities no matter what Romans 13 says

Christians will (and do) oppose civil authorities no matter what Romans 13 says

(RNS) — Al Mohler, the Never-Trumper-turned-Trumpist who runs the largest Southern Baptist seminary in the United States, responded to the anti-ICE protests in Minnesota last week by urging Christians to submit to government authorities in obedience to what the Apostle Paul said in his Letter to the Romans. “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established,” Paul wrote in Romans’ Chapter 13. “The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.”  Mohler applied the passage to Minneapolis, writing: “I do think we need to underline as Christians that Romans 13 principle about lawful authority and anyone who goes on the streets to interfere with a lawful exercise of law enforcement authority, I think that’s inherently problematic.” “Inherently problematic” understates the force of Paul’s injunction.  Paul was exhorting the small communities of Jesus followers of his time to pacifically await the end …

Why do people support or oppose bike lanes? Our research sheds light on public opinion

Why do people support or oppose bike lanes? Our research sheds light on public opinion

Cities across the UK are investing in new cycle lanes and traffic restrictions to cut congestion, improve air quality and promote active travel for better health. Yet, if recent debates are anything to go by, you might think such measures were deeply unpopular. The introduction of protected cycle lanes and low traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs) often sparks vocal opposition from local groups, who call for schemes to be delayed or scrapped. For instance, in London, Kensington and Chelsea council removed cycle lanes from Kensington High Street after a short-term trial in 2020. Meanwhile, in Oxford, there have been calls to reopen residential streets to again allow through traffic during emergencies. Concerns often focus on cycle lanes taking up valuable road space and on LTNs displacing motor traffic onto surrounding boundary roads. These discussions may give the impression that the public is firmly against cycling initiatives and traffic restrictions. However, our research suggests that strong support for them can be found, but how schemes are designed and introduced is crucial. Our recent study, which analysed more than …

GOP stock trading ban bill clears committee, Dems oppose

GOP stock trading ban bill clears committee, Dems oppose

A Republican-backed bill to ban members of Congress from buying new stocks survived an initial procedural hurdle Wednesday, despite Democrats’ complaints that the legislation doesn’t go far enough. The bill was approved along party lines in the House Administration Committee, with seven of the panel’s GOP members voting for it and all four of its Democrats opposing it. “Your member of Congress should not be day trading stocks,” said Rep. Bryan Steil, R-Wis., who chairs the committee and introduced the bill, in an interview with CNBC before the vote. “You want to day trade? There’s a place for that, and it’s called Wall Street,” Steil said. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., previously told CNBC that he would bring the bill to a floor vote if it was approved in the committee. It’s unclear if the bill will be able to pass the full House, where Republicans hold a razor-thin and at times fractious majority. Democratic members have said Steil’s bill doesn’t do enough to prevent insider trading among lawmakers. All of their amendments to …

Huge 64% of Maine voters oppose iGaming, according to poll

A whopping 64% of Maine voters reject iGaming, with health, social and economic risks cited as factors for why they’re against it, according to a statewide poll. The survey, which included 500 people, was commissioned by the National Association Against iGaming (NAAiG), with the findings coming as Gov. Janet Mills has a narrow window between Wednesday to Friday this week to look at LD 1164, which aims to legalize iGambling. The results of the study show that nearly half of respondents (49%) strongly opposed legalizing it, with these people representing a range of parties including independents, Democrats and Republicans.
