US imposes sanctions on Gaza flotilla organisers amid Israeli crackdown | Gaza News

The United States has imposed sanctions on four activists for their involvement in the flotillas trying to break Israel’s siege on Gaza, alleging without evidence that organisers of the vessels are trying to reach the Palestinian territory “in support of Hamas”. The sanctions on Tuesday come as the Israeli military continues to intercept the latest fleet of Gaza-bound ships. Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list While the humanitarian crisis from the Israeli blockade on Gaza has eased since the “ceasefire” brokered by US President Donald Trump came into effect in October, Palestinians have continued to suffer from shortages, including in food and medical supplies. International activists have been sailing towards Gaza in an effort to defy the blockade and show solidarity with Palestinians. “The pro-terror flotilla attempting to reach Gaza is a ludicrous attempt to undermine President Trump’s successful progress toward lasting peace in the region,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement on Tuesday. “Treasury will continue to sever Hamas’ global financial support networks, no matter where in the world they …

Half marathon organisers apologise after Coventry route was set too long | UK News

Runners who completed the Coventry Half Marathon on Sunday have been told by organisers there was an error measuring the length of the route. Run For All, which operates events across the UK, admitted in a statement that the race “was longer than 13.1 miles”. The organisation offered an apology and explained how the mistake happened. It said an initial investigation found a turning point was wrongly positioned by more than 250m, which meant the route was longer by over half a kilometre. Run For All said: “We are disappointed that this has happened and apologise unreservedly that this has occurred and we take full responsibility for the error. “Our initial investigation shows that the turning point was positioned incorrectly with it being 256m out, which has resulted in the route therefore being 512m long overall.” Runners have been told their results have been updated to provide a time equivalent to a 13.1-mile (21km) finish. Participants have also been told they will be offered half-price entry to next year’s run. Organisers added they would be …

‘Half a million’ join London rally against the far right, claim organisers | UK News

Half a million people have rallied in London against the far right, the demonstration’s organisers claim. The crowds came out for the Together Alliance event, which was framed as a stand against the “politics of division”. It comprised a march, speeches in Whitehall – including a video message from London Mayor, Sir Sadiq Khan – and a music event in Trafalgar Square. A separate march organised by the Palestine Coalition also took place, joining the route of the Together Alliance march before the groups combined in Whitehall. Elsewhere, 18 people staged a protest outside New Scotland Yard in support of Palestine Action, a proscribed organisation. Oscars to leave Hollywood – organisers announce move to downtown Los Angeles for 2029 | Ents & Arts News

The Oscars ceremony is leaving Hollywood, organisers have announced. Coinciding with the previously announced broadcast switch to YouTube, the show will move from the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard to the Peacock Theatre about nine miles (14.5km) away, in downtown Los Angeles‘s LA Live complex, in 2029. The Peacock Theatre has a capacity of about 7,000 – roughly twice the current amount. Pic: Danny Moloshok/Invision for the Television Academy/AP It will come after more than 25 years of Oscars ceremonies at the Dolby Theatre, which has been home to the show since 2002. The Academy Awards will mark its 100th anniversary at the venue in 2028, before the new-look show and broadcast begins. “For the 101st Oscars and beyond, the Academy looks forward to closely collaborating with AEG to make LA LIVE the perfect backdrop for our global celebration of cinema,” the Academy’s chief executive Bill Kramer and …

Organisers rush to complete Milano-Cortina sliding centre, hockey venue

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, Jan 21 : The Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics sliding centre and the ice hockey stadium are almost complete but some work is still necessary so they can be delivered for the Games in 16 days’ time, the International Olympic Committee said on Wednesday. The sliding centre in Cortina d’Ampezzo was under intense pressure after Italy decided less than three years ago to build a new venue instead of using an existing one in a neighbouring country to keep costs down and speed up preparations. That decision – opposed by the IOC before being grudgingly accepted – meant Italian organisers had their backs to the wall from the start of the project. Milan’s Santagiulia ice hockey venue had an equally tight construction schedule. “The sliding centre. Is there still some work to be done? Yes, a lot,” the IOC’s Olympic Games Executive Director Christophe Dubi told a press conference. “But what I have been told is it’s not complex work. Everything that has to do with systems, track refrigeration, scoring, cameras, all is in place,” Dubi, …
