I’ve used Windows long enough to understand how much it’s evolved. But because I use several other OSes, I’m reminded every once in a while that Windows 11 still doesn’t let me do a few perfectly normal things. These limitations may not always feel like a total deal-breaker, but once you understand the extra steps they force on you, it’s impossible to stop wondering why they still exist. Related Windows still won’t let you use this name for a folder — and DOS is why I typed three innocent letters and Windows reacted like I had insulted its ancestors. Every file shows a size. Just about every effort to solve America’s housing shortage runs into the iron law of NIMBY: “not in my backyard.” Whenever a development is proposed in a place where people already live, existing residents erupt in opposition, claiming the new homes will alter “neighborhood character,” increase traffic, and hurt property values. Those who would benefit the most from new housing, meanwhile, don’t yet live in the community and thus have no say in the political process. This creates an asymmetry that’s hard to overcome. Even reforms passed at the state level to override local building restrictions keep failing, because NIMBYs find clever ways to work around them. But a new approach might finally offer a way out of the impasse: If you can’t beat the NIMBYs, pay them. In recent months, several Democratic Party–aligned think tanks have released proposals that share the same basic structure: If a local community approves enough new homes for construction, then each resident of that community receives a check from the federal government worth thousands of dollars. For captive animals, engaging in natural behaviour is a pillar of the animal welfare framework. But when it comes to sex, one important behaviour has been largely ignored, and sometimes even punished: masturbation. Solo sex is surprisingly common across the animal kingdom. It is well documented in primates. Tortoises are surprisingly vocal during their solo lovemaking endeavours, if not very graceful. Camels masturbate by rubbing their penises in the sand and porcupines make inventive use of all sorts of objects. Our new study could change how other scientists view masturbation in birds and improve their welfare. Masturbation also seems to be common in birds. A quick internet search brings up an abundance of video clips on social media and dedicated posts on bird-keeping forums, largely from worried or bemused hobbyist bird keepers. It has often been treated as an abnormal problem behaviour in captive birds (particularly parrots). Folklore husbandry has assumed it is the undesirable outcome of stress, bad health or poor environment.
