Log in Ben Affleck has said Bruce Willis once gave him advice that he thankfully ignored – claiming his Armageddon co-star told him not to bother with Shakespeare in Love. The two actors starred in the 1998 action thriller shortly before Affleck, now 54, switched things up with his role in John Madden’s romantic comedy, which went on to win seven Oscars including best picture. In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Batman actor detailed some of the advice Willis shared while they were on the Armageddon set. He explained: “Bruce Willis once turned to me and was like, ‘Your voice is too high.’ I was like, ‘What?’ He was like, ‘Don’t have that high voice.’ I was like, ‘Bruce, that’s just my voice. Can I change that?’” Adding that Willis was “the sweetest guy in the world” who “really was giving me a tip”, Affleck continued: “He also …

Children’s Picture Books Featuring Cut Paper and Collage Art

Children’s Picture Books Featuring Cut Paper and Collage Art

The Quarto Group This is the story of a girl made of paper: bright, kind, and eager to please. But no matter what she folds herself into, it never feels like enough. A tender fable of self-care and discovering who you are. ★ “Stunning illustrations utilizing the Japanese art of kirie—paper cutting—enliven this fabulistic feminist tale.” —Foreword Reviews, Starred Review “…a memorable, meaningful reading experience.” —School Library Journal Illustrations are what bring picture books to life. They’re often what helps draw in early readers, so finding books with beautiful illustration styles can make the reading experience even more fun and accessible. Cut art and collage art picture books are one style I find particularly enchanting. They have a certain childlike playfulness in every illustration. They invite children to take part in an art form that feels more accessible, almost like they could create art like it themselves, in some way, shape, or form. Classics like The Snowy Day and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom are great examples of collage-style picture books. But the name almost everyone …

Building the bigger picture on childhood obesity

Building the bigger picture on childhood obesity

Researchers across Europe are pooling data and expertise while working with schools, hospitals and families to find better ways to tackle childhood obesity. Dr Eleftheria Vellidou believes childhood obesity in Europe has reached epidemic proportions, and the figures back her up. Around one in four children aged 7 to 9 in Europe are living with overweight, including obesity, according to the latest World Health Organization Europe survey, which examined about 470 000 children in 37 countries. Rates climbed sharply for decades and have only recently levelled off, but experts still consider the figures alarming. Beyond the physical toll, obesity in childhood can bring bullying and stigma. It raises the long-term risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and other serious illnesses, too. Vellidou, a biomedical engineering researcher at the National Technical University of Athens, is a member of the team coordinating BIO-STREAMS, a four-year EU-funded research initiative involving experts from across Europe. Seeing the bigger picture Obesity has complex biological, environmental, behavioural and genetic roots, yet many public discussions focus on food choices and physical activity alone. The …
