Finding Aesthetic Pleasure in Everyday Routines

Finding Aesthetic Pleasure in Everyday Routines

Aesthetic experiences can arise from the appreciation of human artifacts, such as artworks (e.g., music, poetry, sculpture, visual arts, nature, and the built environment). In the presence of beautiful things, we feel a broad range of emotions, such as fascination, awe, wonder, and admiration. The quality of life is affected by the quality of the aesthetic experience we gain in our daily life (Cahn, 2020). Our daily routines (cleaning, living, social interactions, going to work, doing errands, or just sitting quietly) are not normally appreciated because they lack the novelty of the special events. But they are immensely important for our happiness. Through repeated practice, we can cultivate an aesthetic sensibility regarding everyday objects and activities. Artful living means taking a genuine interest in all details of daily life. Here are various concepts to explore to enrich our aesthetic appreciation of our everyday routines (Saito, 2017). 1. Beauty for beauty’s sake Aesthetic pleasures are typically pursued and enjoyed for their own sake. The focus is on the pleasure that arises from the act of doing …

You might think about it when you’re desperate for a wee, or when your Pilates instructor screams at you to engage your core – but other than that, our pelvic floor is a criminally unattended-to muscle. Often ignored until a woman is pregnant or approaching menopause, the pelvic floor actually plays a key part in our health throughout our lives, as it is responsible for core strength, stability, and bladder control. If that’s not enough to convince you to give it some attention, your pelvic floor also plays a big part in your sex life. “The pelvic floor supports bladder, bowel, and reproductive health, but it also plays a key role in sexual sensation …

Doctor Who’s Peter Purves on “pleasure” of lost episodes being recovered

Doctor Who’s Peter Purves on “pleasure” of lost episodes being recovered

This article appears in the new issue of Radio Times magazine. In thrilling news for Doctor Who fans, two episodes once thought lost for ever have been returned to the BBC Archives. Starring William Hartnell as the first Doctor – and last seen in 1965 – these are the first and third instalments of a gritty 12-part epic, The Daleks’ Master Plan. The original videotapes were erased long ago by the BBC, but film copies were preserved by a private collector, who died recently. His estate has requested anonymity, while generously passing his collection to Film Is Fabulous, a charitable trust run by cinema lovers and vintage-TV enthusiasts. “We’re lucky these 16mm films are in excellent condition,” Peter Purves tells Radio Times. Two years before joining Blue Peter, he co-starred as the Doctor’s travelling companion, Steven Taylor. Now 87, and one of the few surviving cast members of this story, he was invited to a surprise screening in Leicester a few weeks ago. “I was blown away by both episodes, not only because they’d been …

Just so you know, HuffPost UK may collect a share of sales or other compensation from the links on this page if you decide to shop from them. Oh, and FYI — prices are accurate and items in stock as of time of publication. For decades, we’ve been programmed to think that sex toys should be shaped like (ahem) certain body parts and come in purple or black silicone. That’s it. We have to give it to them: those kinds of toys serve a specific purpose, and they get the job done. But sometimes, the potential embarrassment of having a flatmate, family member, or even lover stumble across the spicy devices you’d like to have is simply not worth it. Considering more young people are living at home because of our crap housing market, the risk of that happening are kinda higher than ever. Some folk simply aren’t into phallic or vulva-shaped toys either. So, if you ask …

Lessons in Pleasure – The Atlantic

Lessons in Pleasure – The Atlantic

In 1926, a widely respected Dutch gynecologist named Theodoor Hendrik van de Velde published a manual whose aim was to explain the vital role of sex in marriage. “What husband and wife who love one another seek to achieve in their most intimate bodily communion,” he wrote, is “a means of expression that makes them One.” The book, Ideal Marriage: Its Physiology and Technique, was addressed mostly to men—and became a best seller. It ran for more than 300 pages and included detailed sections on hygiene, sexual positions, and human reproduction. But the text’s most remarkable trait—to me, a reader encountering it 100 years later—is that its author did not so much advise as exhort men to concentrate on their wife’s pleasure. A man, van de Velde wrote, “must know how to make love.” (Italics his.) I stumbled on Ideal Marriage by chance, while researching 20th-century portrayals of female sexuality. I was immediately compelled by its florid vocabulary (van de Velde on the clitoris: a “superlatively sensitive and excitable organ”) but even more so by …

Immune signal in the brain may offer new target for treating meth addiction

Immune signal in the brain may offer new target for treating meth addiction

Methamphetamine addiction has a way of looping back on itself. A rush of pleasure pulls you in, cravings follow, and the brain learns that the drug is the fastest route to reward. Yet scientists still lack an approved medication that directly treats methamphetamine addiction. That gap has left clinicians relying on counseling and support, while researchers hunt for new biological targets. Now, University of Florida neuroscientists say they have identified a key chain reaction in the brain that could open a new path: testing immune-modulating medicines as a way to interrupt meth’s grip. In a preclinical study, a team at the McKnight Brain Institute led by Habibeh Khoshbouei, Ph.D., Pharm.D., traced how meth triggers both dopamine surges and an inflammatory signal that, surprisingly, can feed those dopamine effects. “Unlike alcohol or opioids, there currently is no medicinal therapeutic approach for methamphetamine addiction,” said Khoshbouei, a professor of neuroscience and psychiatry. “So this is an important societal issue.” Identification of dopamine neurons in the VTA. The pleasure of eating in Indianapolis

The pleasure of eating in Indianapolis

Indianapolis has a way of surprising you. It’s the kind of Midwestern city that rewards lingering — where the food scene punches far above its weight, strangers are genuinely kind, and nature quietly weaves its way through downtown life. It works just as well for a long weekend as it does for a slow, exploratory week. My wife and I discovered this on our very first visit, when we got married in the backyard of a cottage tucked along the banks of the White River. It was one of those trips that imprints itself on you — intimate, unexpected and immediately beloved. We’ve returned several times since, so when our fifth wedding anniversary rolled around, I quietly teamed up with Visit Indy to plan a surprise return. Over a leisurely week, we leaned all the way in: washing elephants at the Indianapolis Zoo, eating our way through the city’s restaurants, and spending long stretches on and in the White River — by gondola, kayak, and even with a fishing pole in hand. It was the …

Shadows in the Pleasure Gardens by Elaine Mary Griffin

Shadows in the Pleasure Gardens by Elaine Mary Griffin

The summer heat hangs heavy over early nineteenth-century Fairmount, and with it comes a tale that unfolds like the lengthening shadows across a well-worn racetrack. Elaine Mary Griffin’s debut novel, Shadows in the Pleasure Gardens: Regarding Robberies and Racehorses, transports readers to a world where bank notes change hands as quickly as loyalties, where the thunder of hooves provides momentary escape from life’s pressing questions, and where a young man discovers that the path to purpose rarely runs straight. An Unconventional Coming-of-Age Tale At its heart, this novel follows Chester Carter, a self-described unambitious young man apprenticing at Tate’s Banking and Loans in the quiet village of Fairmount. Chester himself might argue that he is not unambitious but rather independent-minded, a distinction the narrative explores with considerable nuance. When he witnesses a brazen daylight robbery committed by men disguised with war paint, Chester finds himself thrust into an investigation that will upend every comfortable assumption he has about his future. What makes Chester such a compelling protagonist is his ordinariness. He is neither hero nor …

Arc Raiders review – pure multiplayer pleasure | Games

Arc Raiders review – pure multiplayer pleasure | Games

Arc Raiders is an extraction shooter from Embark Studios – so, a game where you deploy into a map full of other players and do as much shooting and looting as you can before making an escape. This is my first real go at the genre, and it’s excellent. It has smooth, only occasionally cumbersome combat, sound design that scratches the brain just right and robotic enemies that genuinely terrify. And it satisfies my constant need to sift through my inventory and rifle through every drawer. But I have to keep my head on a swivel: Arc Raider’s player v player element means I can get jumped for my precious cargo by a malicious rival at any moment. And also, the knowledge that this game was made with the help of generative AI voice acting makes me slightly ashamed of how much I enjoy it. I play every game sheepishly looking over my shoulder (and my character’s) in case someone in-game takes my sought-after blueprint, or someone in real life kicks down my door to …
