How Porto’s gritty, industrial neighbour became a cool coastal hotspot | Porto holidays

How Porto’s gritty, industrial neighbour became a cool coastal hotspot | Porto holidays

Why go now This once declining industrial city is on the up, but not so much that it has been ruined – yet. See it now, mid-gentrification, before its humble seafood restaurants become overpriced and its beautifully curated museums and galleries overrun. Five miles north-west of Porto city centre, Matosinhos (pronounced mh-to-ZEE-nyosh) is a municipality built on the fishing. After the construction of the vast Port of Leixões in the 19th century, its fishing industry boomed and supported 54 canneries in its mid-20th-century heyday. Two survive, but most have been demolished, along with the textile factories and sugar refinery that occupied the district south of the harbour, next to the extensive sands of Matosinhos beach, which are fringed by surf schools and rammed with Porto residents in summer. Luxury apartment blocks have risen from the ashes of once prosperous industries, but these stand cheek by jowl with 19th-century tiled houses, abandoned buildings daubed with graffiti and faded mid-century architectural classics championing raw concrete. The faculty of architecture at the University of Porto exerted its influence …

Textiles in Porto, Portugal : NPR

Textiles in Porto, Portugal : NPR

Linen lines the lanes of Porto’s old town. Up high, fresh laundry quivers in the breeze like bunting, pegged precariously to twine stretched taut between windows. And at street level, linen scarves, cotton aprons and tea towels adorn the entrances to souvenir shops, many of which are run by Bangladeshi immigrants whose home country shares Portugal’s rich tradition of textile manufacturing. As I thumb the tea towels, I’m struck by stark sentimentality. I think of the drawer of tea towels at home, a motley mix of mementos from my own vacations and those I’ve inadvertently inherited. From William Morris-patterned linens to a faded rendering of a map marking Hadrian’s Wall, to a cloth bearing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and another claiming life begins at 40. Each time I take a fresh tea towel to dry dishes, I think about past conversations at various kitchen sinks with those who have held and folded these very cloths. Now, as my child helps to dry while I wash up, we’re wrapped in the comfort of these …

Nottingham Forest v Porto Europa League TV channel, live stream, kick-off time

Nottingham Forest welcome Porto to The City Ground on Thursday evening with their Europa League quarter-final in the balance. The Reds are hunting a first European semi-final since 1984 after earning a 1-1 draw in Portugal last week. Vitor Pereira shuffled his pack for the first leg, resting nine players with the Premier League relegation battle in mind, and now faces an interesting selection call. Porto will see the first leg as a missed opportunity, having dominated before handing Forest a lifeline through a remarkable Martim Fernandes own-goal, but will still arrive in the East Midlands with confidence they can return to the semi-finals of the Europa League for the first time since their 2010/11 triumph. The City Ground has been the stage for some famous European nights over the years and Thursday could be another one for the history books. Porto v Nottingham Forest Europa League TV channel, live stream, kick-off time

Nottingham Forest travel to Estádio do Dragão on Thursday, aiming to become just the second team to beat Porto at home this season. The Reds have been drawn against the Liga Portugal leaders in the quarter-finals of the Europa League after beating Midtjylland on penalties. Nuno Espírito Santo’s side will head into the first leg with plenty of confidence, having beaten Porto in the League Phase in October, but with a lengthy list of missing players, including star midfielder Elliot Anderson. The Portuguese side have not lost a Europa League game since they came unstuck at the City Ground and made light work of Stuttgart in the last round, winning 4-1 on aggregate. Francesco Farioli’s team have been particularly impressive at home, where they’ve won all five of their European games – scoring 12 goals and conceding just three. Residente to Direct Bady Bunny in ‘Porto Rico’ Movie

René Pérez Joglar, the Puerto Rican rapper also known as Residente, will make his feature directorial debut with historical epic Porto Rico, which is set to star Bad Bunny (aka Benito Martínez Ocasio). Viggo Mortensen, Edward Norton and Javier Bardem are also set for the project that is described as “an epic Caribbean western and historical drama” that will explore Puerto Rico’s origins. Pérez Joglar co-wrote the screenplay with Oscar-winning Birdman screenwriter Alexander Dinelaris. “I have dreamed of making a film about my country since I was a child. Puerto Rico’s true history has always been surrounded by controversy,” said Pérez Joglar in a statement. “This film is a reaffirmation of who we are—told with the intensity and honesty that our history deserves.”  Pérez Joglar and Erick Douât will produce for 1868 Studios, a partnership between Joglar and Sony Music that focuses on bringing Latin stories to global audiences. Norton, Bill Migliore and Michael Bederman will produce for Class 5 Films (The Painted Veil, Motherless Brooklyn). The film will be backed by Live Nation Studios …

Bad Bunny to star in Residente’s directorial debut ‘Porto Rico’

Puerto Rican rapper Residente will make his directorial debut with “Porto Rico,” and the film will feature an all-star lineup, including Bad Bunny in the lead role. Also joining the cast are Academy Award-nominated actors Javier Bardem, Edward Norton and Viggo Mortensen. The film explores the complicated colonial history of Puerto Rico through Western/historical drama storytelling devices. For Residente — whose birth name is René Pérez Joglar — this announcement is the result of a two-year effort to get his movie into production. In February 2023, it was announced that Oscar-winning screenwriter Alexander Dinelaris — who co-wrote “Birdman” and “The Revenant” alongside Alejandro González Iñárritu — helped Pérez Joglar pen the upcoming film’s script. González Iñárritu will serve as an executive producer for the film. “I have dreamed of making a film about my country since I was a child. Puerto Rico’s true history has always been surrounded by controversy,” Pérez Joglar said in a statement. “This film is a reaffirmation of who we are — told with the intensity and honesty that our history …
