AI compute provider Nscale is looking for $3.5B in pre-IPO financing

Nscale, a British AI infrastructure company founded just two years ago, has said it may go public as early as later this month. Ahead of that expected IPO, the company is reportedly in talks to raise an additional $3.5 billion. Bloomberg reported Friday that the company is looking to sell $1.5 billion in convertible notes — a type of loan that can later convert into company stock — to a group of investors, while also seeking an additional $2 billion in financing from Nvidia. Nvidia also participated in the firm’s Series B funding round in March, a $1.1 billion raise led by investment fund Aker. Nscale hailed its round as “the largest Series B in European history.” The company’s Series A round, in December of 2024, raised $155 million. TechCrunch reached out to Nscale and Nvidia for comment. AI infrastructure startups have seen immense growth amid the current era of AI enthusiasm, wherein compute has become a competitive currency. President Donald Trump’s goal of ending gender-affirming care is not improper and cannot be the basis for quashing a subpoena issued by the Justice Department against a provider of medical treatment for transgender youth, a divided federal appeals court ruled Friday. The Justice Department announced last year that it had issued more than 20 subpoenas to doctors and clinics that provide gender-affirming care as part of an effort to investigate healthcare fraud. Federal judges have quashed many of the subpoenas as illegitimate efforts to intimidate providers into ending care. In a 2-1 decision, a panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the efficacy and long-term risks of the treatments are “uncertain,” and the president has the power to align the Justice Department’s enforcement priorities with his broader policy goals. “Every President has law enforcement priorities, just as every President has signature policies (often, the former are components of the latter),” Judge Carlos Bea wrote. WASHINGTON, Aug 14 (Reuters) – A U.S. federal appeals court handed ⁠President ⁠Donald Trump’s administration a legal victory on ⁠Friday in its efforts to seek data from providers of transgender healthcare to minors, ​reinstating a Justice Department subpoena that a lower court had blocked as politically motivated. In its ruling, a divided panel of the San Francisco-based ‌9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ‌said a federal judge in Seattle wrongly concluded the Justice Department’s subpoena was issued in bad faith in a lawsuit brought ⁠by telehealth provider ⁠QueerDoc. QueerDoc provides gender-affirming care for patients, including minors, diagnosed with gender dysphoria, which is ​distress from a mismatch between a patient’s sex at birth and gender identity. The approach favours self-hosted, or “on-premise,” ⁠models that ⁠Ukraine can deploy on its own infrastructure, while limiting solutions that, ​by design, remain under the provider’s control — a category that includes Anthropic and OpenAI’s main models. Having said that, there is still constant pressure on men to be providers for their families. June 16 : Data center provider Csquare on Tuesday revealed a rise in annual and quarterly revenue in its filing for an initial public offering in the U.S. Activity in the U.S. IPO market has seen a rebound as several sectors seek to capitalize on the investor enthusiasm for fresh stocks, with many companies seeing a strong reception on their debut days. Elon Musk’s SpaceX went public in New York on Friday after a record-breaking IPO. AI giants Anthropic and Sam Altman’s OpenAI have also filed confidentially to go public in the U.S. The rapid shift toward AI development and deployment is driving a surge in demand for the type of infrastructure provided by Csquare, a data center operator that provides space, power and connectivity ​solutions. It’s no secret that AI data centers have been straining the grid. But Silicon Valley has been relatively insulated from it all, thanks to high land and power prices that have pushed hyperscaler projects elsewhere.  The tech elite might soon get a taste of the power crunch, though. The Bay Area’s vacationland, Lake Tahoe, has less than a year to find a new energy supplier. By May 2027, Liberty Utilities’ agreement with NV Energy will come to an end. NV Energy’s power will be redirected elsewhere in Nevada, where data centers have been booming. Both Liberty Utilities and NV Energy have said the wind-down has been long planned, and NV Energy said data centers aren’t to blame. But it’s hard to see how they don’t play a role.
