Gavin Newsom. This first-in-the-nation effort aims to alleviate immediate financial burdens for new parents. The program will initially roll out in 65 to 75 hospitals, serving about a quarter of the state’s births and primarily low-income patients. Newsom framed the plan as part of California’s commitment to making the expensive state more manageable for families, citing free school meals and universal preschool. “Every baby born in California deserves a healthy start in life — and that means making sure parents have the basics they need from day one,” the Democrat said in a statement. The state allocated $7.4 million last year for the rollout, with an additional $12.5 million proposed for the fiscal year ending June 2027 to expand the program. …
