Gavin Newsom. This first-in-the-nation effort aims to alleviate immediate financial burdens for new parents. The program will initially roll out in 65 to 75 hospitals, serving about a quarter of the state’s births and primarily low-income patients. Newsom framed the plan as part of California’s commitment to making the expensive state more manageable for families, citing free school meals and universal preschool. “Every baby born in California deserves a healthy start in life — and that means making sure parents have the basics they need from day one,” the Democrat said in a statement. The state allocated $7.4 million last year for the rollout, with an additional $12.5 million proposed for the fiscal year ending June 2027 to expand the program. …

Is Your Audiologist Providing Person-Centered Care?

Is Your Audiologist Providing Person-Centered Care?

We all deserve high-quality hearing care. But how do we know if we are receiving it? In recent years, healthcare has been moving toward a model called person-centered care—an approach that prioritizes the individual, not just the diagnosis. In hearing care, this shift is especially important. Hearing loss doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It affects relationships, identity, energy levels, and how we move through the world. Person-centered care recognizes that. It invites patients to become active participants in their care rather than passive recipients. It also acknowledges something research has consistently shown: When patients’ perspectives, preferences, and lived experiences are part of the process, outcomes improve. 4 Questions to Point the Way Ask these four questions to make sure you are receiving person-centered care. 1. Does Your Hearing Care Professional Partner With You? The best hearing care professionals don’t start with your audiogram—they start with your life. Good care is collaborative. Before or during your first appointment, you should be asked to describe the situations that challenge you most: noisy restaurants, work meetings, conversations with …

Analysis Finds That Google’s AI Overviews Are Providing Misinformation at a Scale Possibly Unprecedented in the History of Human Civilization

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Google’s AI Overviews are peddling misinformation on a scale that may be virtually unprecedented in human history. A recent analysis conducted by the AI startup Oumi at the behest of The New York Times found that the AI-generated summaries, which appear above Google search results, are accurate around 91 percent of the time.  In a sense, that may sound like an impressive figure. But here’s an even more impressive one: five trillion. That’s roughly the number of search queries that Google processes every year, translating to tens of millions of wrong answers that the AI Overviews are providing every hour — and hundreds of thousands every minute, the analysis calculated. In other words, Google has created a misinformation crisis. Studies have shown that people tend to trust what an AI tells them without question, with one report finding that only 8 percent of users actually double checked an AI’s answer. Another experiment found that users still listened to …

Sweden charges man for coercing wife into providing sexual services to over 120 men

A Swedish prosecutor charged a man on Monday with aggravated pimping, assault and multiple rapes after he allegedly sold his wife’s sexual services to over 120 men. The 62-year-old man was arrested in late October after his wife reported him to police in northern Sweden, and he has been held in custody since then. According to the charge sheet, the man had for years benefitted financially from pressuring his wife “to perform and submit to sexual acts”. The man was accused of creating ads online, setting up meetings, keeping guard and pressuring the woman to perform sexual acts online in order to attract more clients. He was also accused of being violent and threatening her, exploiting her fear of him and taking advantage of her drug addiction in what the prosecutor said was “ruthless exploitation”. Iran says Russia and China providing ‘military cooperation’ – POLITICO

On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump speculated that Russian President Vladimir Putin might be helping Iran “a bit.” “I guess, and he probably thinks we’re helping Ukraine, right?” said Trump, in reference to aid to Kyiv to defend against Moscow’s all-out invasion. Iran and Russia have strengthened ties over the past decade in response to U.S. opposition. Iran has been supplying Russia with its domestically designed Shahed drones, which Moscow uses to wage its war in Ukraine, going so far as to set up factories in Russia. The two countries also threw their support behind the now-defunct regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria. In 2021, Iran signed a 25-year economic cooperation agreement with Beijing, centering on the sale Iran’s rich oil reserves to supply China. Araghchi in Saturday’s interview also addressed the turmoil in the key waterway of the Strait of Hormuz, which passes by the coasts of Iran and Oman, and which is a passage for one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas. Tensions in the Strait have propelled the cost of oil to …

Russia is providing intelligence to Iran on the location of U.S. forces, sources say

WASHINGTON — Russia is providing intelligence to Iran on the location of U.S. forces in the Middle East, a boost for Tehran as it launches missile and drone attacks on American bases and other targets in the region, according to four sources with knowledge of the matter. The intelligence assistance from Russia could help Iran locate American warships, radar or other communication systems, but there is no indication Moscow is helping direct Iranian missile or drone strikes, the sources said. Iran began firing missiles and drones at U.S. bases and other American targets after the United States and Israel launched an air war against the regime last Saturday. Russia’s decision to provide Iran with data from its satellites and other intelligence underscores the widening geopolitical fallout from the war and could carry potential risks for American ships, aircraft and bases in the region. The Washington Post first reported on Russia’s assistance. Trump, when asked by a reporter about Russian intelligence assistance to Iran, said the question was “stupid.” “That’s an easy problem compared to what …

TikTok Refuses to Confirm or Deny That It’s Providing User Data to ICE

TikTok Refuses to Confirm or Deny That It’s Providing User Data to ICE

Last month, the popular social video app TikTok finalized a deal with investors, including Oracle, to appease a bipartisan bill that called on the app’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, to divest — or be banned in the United States. The deal launched a frenzy among its US-based users over possible censorship, with some accusing it of taking down footage of ICE agents or restricting searches for words, such as “Epstein.” While TikTok denied these claims, pointing to a “data center power outage,” the app also changed its privacy policy at the time — now allowing it to collect more detailed data on its users, including their precise locations. That sparked new fears. As The New Republic argues, TikTok’s deal means that agents at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), whose deportation efforts have been supercharged under the Trump administration, could skip tedious court-ordered data requests and monitor users by buying their data from private data brokers that obtain the info from TikTok directly — a “highly ironic” development, the magazine writes, considering the ByteDance deal was motivated …

Macron Says France Now Providing Two Thirds of Intelligence to Ukraine

Macron Says France Now Providing Two Thirds of Intelligence to Ukraine

PARIS, Jan 15 (Reuters) – President Emmanuel ‌Macron said on Thursday that France ‌was now providing two-thirds of intelligence information to Ukraine, largely replacing the United States, which until last year had delivered the bulk of those services. In ‍March 2025, Washington made the decision to suspend intelligence sharing with Ukraine as part of efforts to crank up pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to cooperate with President Donald Trump’s bid to convene peace talks with Russia, which invaded Ukraine in February 2022. The relationship has had its ups and downs since, but there has been no indication that Washington ‌has drastically cut its intelligence provision to Ukraine. In a New Year’s speech to the ‌French military, Macron praised ‍Europe’s efforts over the last two years in taking over major strands of weapons support to Ukraine.  He said a coalition of some 35 countries was now providing all of the support, including financial, to Kyiv after Washington had decided to no longer fund or directly give weapons to Ukraine. “Where Ukraine was extremely dependent on …
