Expert: Murrell may have been trying to heal psychological wound with purchases

Former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell will have rationalised his embezzlement of more than £400,000, acting on a possible internal pressure to have the “lavish lifestyle that he craved but could not afford” a criminologist suggested. Dr Nicola Harding said Murrell’s case was a “textbook white collar crime” involving someone in a “position of respectability”. But she said that Nicola Sturgeon’s ex-husband may have been “trying to fill a gap within himself” with his series of lavish purchases, which were paid for with party cash. Murrell with his then wife Nicola Sturgeon – who announced their separation in January 2025 Speaking the day after more details about how Murrell’s crimes were committed were revealed in court, the expert said: “What I know from the fraudsters, financial criminals I have worked with, is purchasing, what they try to gain out of it is not really about the items themselves, it is about how those items make them feel.” Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland’s Breakfast programme, Dr Harding said: “They are often coming from a place of …

Employees Of The Ultra-Wealthy Share The 5 Most Out-Of-Touch Purchases They’ve Witnessed

For those of us living average lives with average incomes, it’s easy to think that super rich people are like an anomaly, and not that many of them exist. America’s top 1% is actually made up of an estimated 1.6 million households, though. That means many of us have had the chance to interact with very wealthy people, even if we didn’t realize it at the time. One Reddit user asked those who worked with “ultra-wealthy” people what “out-of-touch” purchases they had seen them make, and the answers were mind-boggling for all the regular Joes out there. Employees of the ‘ultra-wealthy’ witness some really out-of-touch behavior, but these 5 purchases take the cake: 1. A terrarium penthouse Rafael Aguiar | Pexels Technically, this report came from a man who dated a rich man’s granddaughter, not from someone who actually worked for him, but it’s outrageous all the same. The grandfather lived in a luxury apartment, but that wasn’t enough for him. He also purchased the penthouse above him to use as a “terrarium type of …

Italy Purchases Rare Caravaggio Portrait for .7 M.

Italy Purchases Rare Caravaggio Portrait for $34.7 M.

Italy has purchased a rare Caravaggio portrait for €30 million ($34.7 million), one of the largest sums ever paid by the state for a work of art, according to the country’s culture ministry. The painting, depicting the cleric Monsignor Maffeo Barberini—who would later ascend as Pope Urban VIII—was described as being of “exceptional importance,” Alessandro Giuli, Italy’s culture minister, said in a statement. The portrait had been kept in a private collection in Florence and was first shown publicly in 2004 in Rome. Following its purchase by the Italian state, it was transferred to the permanent collection of the Palazzo Barberini, the historic residence of the Barberini family, where it will be exhibited alongside other works by Caravaggio. Related Articles The master Baroque artist painted Barberini around 1598. The composition anticipates his eventual rise to power: draped in a resplendent green cleric’s cloak, his right hand is outstretched, casually issuing orders to an unseen figure outside the frame. He was elected pope in 1623 and served until he died in 1644, leaving a legacy of …

8 ‘Normal’ Purchases Middle-Class People Justify — Even When They’re Wasting Money

Growing up, I’ve seen people around me obsessed with things that made no sense to me. Like cricket tickets, for example. It’s a guy hitting a ball with a stick and a bunch of grown men running around chasing it. Plus, you can barely see the action taking place if you’re not in the first few rows of the stadium.  You’d have a 10x better view of everything that’s going on watching it at home, on your TV set. Not to mention the privacy of your home, comfort of your couch, and reasonably priced concessions of your choice. A lot of the purchases I’ve seen people make, especially people my age, just feel like I’m watching them throw money away. Anyway, this list isn’t going to be about sports cars and luxury items; that would be too obvious. Most of us can already agree that they are a complete waste of money. Instead, I’m going to go through the ‘normal’ purchases middle-class people justify, even when they’re wasting money.  Here are the 8 ‘normal’ purchases …

The document released by the U.S. Trade Representative’s office on Thursday also commits Taiwan to significantly boost purchases of U.S. goods from 2025 through 2029, including $44.4 billion of liquefied natural gas and crude oil, $15.2 billion of civil aircraft and engines, $25.2 billion of power grid equipment and generators, marine and steelmaking equipment. The agreement adds technical language and specific details to a trade framework deal first reached in January that cut tariffs on Taiwanese goods, including from its powerhouse semiconductor industries, to 15% from the 20% initially imposed by Trump. That puts Taiwan on an equal footing with its closest Asian export competitors, …
