“They’re my people”: Trump shrugs off concerns of MAGA ranchers’ beef

President Donald Trump has some beef with the price of beef. American ranchers — many of them among his most reliable supporters — have some beef with his solution. Trump announced Friday that the United States would temporarily allow up to 300,000 metric tons of foreign beef to enter the country without triggering higher out-of-quota tariffs. He said exporters had committed to selling the beef at 25% below current market prices. “This deal will reduce prices for Americans while giving space for our Great American Beef Herd to grow again,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. But the plan has prompted unusually sharp opposition from cattle producers and Republicans representing ranching states, who say importing discounted foreign beef will undercut the American producers Trump has promised to protect. “What a slap in the face to American cattlemen & consumers,” Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., wrote. “Worse than socialism!” Massie argued that temporarily dumping cheaper foreign beef into the American market could lower prices without giving U.S. ranchers an incentive to raise more cattle. GOP lawmakers criticize Trump’s beef import plan amid blowback from ranchers

House and Senate Republicans on Friday criticized President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend tariffs on ground beef imports, with lawmakers from agricultural states decrying the impact Trump’s decision will have on farmers. Nebraska’s GOP senators, Deb Fischer and Pete Ricketts, said in separate posts on X that Trump’s decision was unwise. “I’m extremely disappointed by this decision from the White House,” Fischer wrote. “We all want lower grocery prices, but as I’ve said for months, we cannot do it at the expense of American producers. Flooding the market with foreign beef hurts our livestock industry.” Ricketts wrote: “I appreciate the Administration’s work to lower grocery prices. Short term policy shifts do not equal long term solutions. Flooding the market with lower quality beef compromises Nebraska farmers and ranchers.” The president announced Friday on Truth Social that “the United States will allow up to 300,000 metric tons of product for ground beef to be imported with no out of quota tariff. We have a commitment that this beef will be sold at 25 percent below current …

The SBA’s agreement with the USDA gives producers a “direct line to report the regulations and rules driving up costs and impacting productivity,” the agency said in a July 2 statement. It also enables the SBA and the USDA to “identify broader patterns of regulatory abuse to advance lasting deregulatory reform.” The USDA will run a centralized portal that will receive lawfare complaints involving federal agencies, which will be shared with the SBA’s Office of the National Ombudsman. Any complaint involving the USDA will be handled by the department, while other complaints will be referred by the SBA to the appropriate agencies. Under the …
