Press Gazette Reality Wars investigation recognised by Paul Foot Awards

Press Gazette has been recognised by the Paul Foot Award judges for its investigation into AI-generated experts who conned their way into dozens of news outlets. Journalist Rob Waugh led the investigation, which began with the revelation that one of the UK’s most quoted psychologists – Barbara Santini – does not exist. Since then, Press Gazette has compiled a dossier of more than 1,000 faked stories featuring more than a dozen fake experts. Private Eye’s Paul Foot Award recognises investigative and campaigning journalism that combines “intrepid investigative skills, dogged campaigning and a deep commitment to championing fairness and exposing wrongdoing”. Other longlisted stories include The Observer for The real Salt Path investigation, Democracy for Sale’s investigation into PR dirty tactics against The Sunday Times and The i Paper’s revelations about silicosis killing kitchen installers (see full longlist). The longlist of 12 will be narrowed down into a shortlist of six and the winner will be announced on 1 June. After the first Press Gazette article, journalists began to contact Waugh with screenshots of email inboxes …

ER is coming to Netflix – it’s time we recognised it changed TV forever

We all have an example of a TV show like this, right? The one that holds an outsized importance in our affections? For me, it’s undoubtedly and wholeheartedly ER, the 15 seasons of which are coming to Netflix in the UK on 9 February. It’s a method of accessing the series that would have been inconceivable to the undergraduate version of myself who, back in the mid-1990s, was watching on a 14-inch portable TV with his girlfriend in manky digs. It felt, at the time, like an impossibly sophisticated drama. All that frantic talk of Chem-7s, CBCs, Coags, EKGs being clean or otherwise. No real idea what any of it meant, but it sure seemed as though we were eavesdropping on the way things truly worked at the sharp end of hospital life. And the acts of heroism on display, such as reckless Doug Ross (George Clooney) risking all to rescue a boy trapped in a storm drain as the rain waters rose. It felt filmic, almost mythic. Well, as much as anything can on …

Northern Ireland Humanists is today celebrating the milestone of 5,000 legally recognised humanist marriages since their introduction in Northern Ireland in 2018. Official figures provided by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) have just revealed that the 5,000th marriage took place on 4 October 2025. The ceremony in question saw Belfast-based Aimee Brown and Stewart Clawson marry and was led by celebrant Jean Barrett Quinn. Aimee and Stewart said: ‘Our wedding day was something amazing, and now we are delighted all over again to find out it happened to be a historic milestone. ‘Although we were taught that love, respect, and social justice are rooted in religious teachings growing up, we’ve come to realise that these values are fundamentally human, stemming from our shared capacity to care for and respect others. A humanist wedding felt like the best fit for us from the beginning, as it aligns with our beliefs and values. We wanted the day to be a celebration of our love story, not focused on any religious aspects, or legally required …
