Recommendation: U.K. Spinoza Circle | Blog of the APA

This series on Philosophy and Technology has construed technology broadly, often focusing on the relationship among faith, science, and philosophy. Several pieces have discussed Spinoza, and one of the original posts with Michael Della Rocca, on his book The Parmenidean Ascent, drew parallels between a strict form of Rationalism and modern physics. At the same time, the series leverages public philosophy, which has been my connection to the discipline and the inspiration for my affiliation with the APA and work with the Public Philosophy Digest, a series within the APA’s Substack platform.  This month’s piece ties these two elements together, as I would like to share a vibrant online program: the U.K. Spinoza Circle. The upcoming sessions are highlighted below, and the recent seminar was built on one of my favorite APA Blog posts—a discussion with Clare Carlisle on her last book, Spinoza’s Religion. It makes a powerful case that Spinoza’s philosophy is vital for our restless world—accommodating the alternatives of faith and philosophy. I also recommend Clare’s recent biography of Kierkegaard, Philosopher of the Heart. In the most recent U.K. Circle, Clare …

Meta Developed 4 New Chips to Power Its AI and Recommendation Systems

Meta Developed 4 New Chips to Power Its AI and Recommendation Systems

Meta announced Wednesday that it has developed four new computer chips that will be used to power generative AI features and content ranking systems within the tech giant’s own apps. The hardware will become part of Meta’s existing chip line known as MTIA, or Meta Training and Inference Accelerators. Meta partnered with Broadcom to develop its latest semiconductors, which are built on top of the open-source RISC-V architecture. They’re being fabricated by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, the world’s leading chip producer. One of the new MTIA chips, the MTIA 300, is already in production, and Meta says the other three—the MTIA 400, 450, and 500—are expected to ship sometime between early and late 2027. Putting out fresh silicon this quickly is unusual by most chip industry standards, but is essentially unheard of for a social media company that historically didn’t produce its own physical computing infrastructure. YJ Song, a vice president of engineering at Meta, says that AI models are evolving faster than traditional chip development cycles, so AI workloads may change substantially by the …

The Agriculture Secretary’s Confusing Dinner Recommendation

The Agriculture Secretary’s Confusing $3 Dinner Recommendation

At first, we didn’t think much of it, the One Other Thing. When Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins suggested a meal of one corn tortilla, one piece of broccoli, one piece of chicken, and “one other thing”—all for a mere $3–we dwelled more on the other parts. The one corn tortilla, the unit of broccoli, the piece of chicken! How strange and bland a combination! How stingy in contrast to the birthday steaks our leaders enjoyed! If we’d only known then. Corn tortilla. Broccoli. Chicken. And one other thing. Maybe a carrot! Maybe a bit of cheese! We assumed that it had to be food. That was our mistake, I think. Assuming that the One Other Thing had to be food. And at first, after we signed on to receive the Recommended Meal, it was food. A mint. Some popcorn. An almond. Nothing too surprising. On the fifth night, we let the baby open it. He put it into his mouth immediately, and I had to fish it out. Something hard and black. That was when …

Why last year’s LG C5 OLED is my top TV recommendation right now – especially at 50% off

Why last year’s LG C5 OLED is my top TV recommendation right now – especially at 50% off

ZDNET’s key takeaways The LG C5 OLED boosts dazzling brightness and color. It features an ultra-slim body, with material choices that evoke premium. It’s priced relatively high for the nominal upgrades over last year’s model. more buying choices Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. I would argue that the most crucial aspect of any television set is its picture quality. Never mind its smart capabilities, brand prestige, or super-high refresh rate. For human beings, at first glance anyway, the visual stimulus overrides all else. This is why when you walk into Costco, you are arrested by the exquisite images flashing on a bunch of big-screen TVs set to “Retail Mode,” peacocking their 4K beauty. First impressions are always based on appearance.  Also: Can’t find any good Netflix shows? I used these secret codes to unlock the full catalog By that criterion alone — picture quality — LG’s 2025 C5 OLED ranks among the best OLED TVs you can buy today. That sounds like a matter-of-fact statement, but I stand behind it because as …

CDC changes flu vaccine recommendation for children : Shots

CDC changes flu vaccine recommendation for children : Shots

A child receives an immunization at a Florida pediatrician’s office in Sept. 2025. Joe Raedle/Getty Images North America hide caption toggle caption Joe Raedle/Getty Images North America Every year, Dr. Molly O’Shea’s pediatric practices would hold drive-thru clinics in the parking lot to make it as easy as possible for busy parents to quickly get their kids their annual flu and COVID-19 shots. “We would do big flu clinics. You know, hundreds — literally hundreds – of families would come through at one time and when they’d roll down their windows we would give vaccine,” O’Shea says. But those days are gone. “No more drive-thrus. That’s out. We can’t do that anymore,” O’Shea says. That’s because last spring Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dropped the recommendation that all kids routinely get COVID shots. And the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week did the same thing for six other childhood immunizations, including the annual flu shot. Instead, the CDC now says parents should talk to a health care provider about …

US Cuts Broad Recommendation for Four Childhood Vaccines Including Flu

US Cuts Broad Recommendation for Four Childhood Vaccines Including Flu

By Ahmed Aboulenein and Michael Erman WASHINGTON, Jan 5 (Reuters) – The United States ended on Monday its longstanding guidance that ‌all children receive vaccines against flu and three other diseases, a ‌sweeping change that advances one of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s long-term goals. Public health experts warn the latest rollback could lead to preventable hospitalizations and deaths. The action, which removes the recommendation for rotavirus, influenza, meningococcal disease and hepatitis A, and states that parents should consult healthcare providers under what it calls shared clinical-decision-making, was approved by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ‍Acting Director Jim O’Neill without the agency’s usual outside expert review. It advances Kennedy’s campaign to pare back childhood vaccinations. Last month, President Donald Trump urged the U.S. to “align with other developed nations” by reducing the number of shots for children. Trump said the new schedule was “rooted in the Gold Standard of Science” and aligns the United States with other developed nations. In a post on his Truth Social platform, the president congratulated Kennedy and other …
