Scientists discover why deadly lung scarring from IPF refuses to heal

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis slowly turns the lungs stiff and scarred, but researchers may have found why the damage keeps building. Their work points to a survival signal inside key cells, and to a treatment approach that could help the lungs recover. Every breath depends on millions of tiny air sacs inside the lungs working smoothly. In people with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, or IPF, that delicate system slowly breaks down. Healthy lung tissue becomes stiff and scarred. Oxygen struggles to move into the bloodstream. Even simple activities can leave patients exhausted and gasping for air. Doctors have long known that scar-forming cells called fibroblasts play a major role in the disease. These cells normally help repair injured tissue. Once healing is complete, many fibroblasts die through a natural process called apoptosis, which acts like the body’s cleanup system. In pulmonary fibrosis, that process fails. A new study from researchers at National Jewish Health and collaborating institutions may finally explain why. The research, published in Nature Communications, found that a protein called BCL-2 helps harmful fibroblasts avoid …

David Lammy Refuses 5 Times To Say If UK Should Rejoin EU As Labour Brexit Row Erupts

Pro-Europe campaigners near parliament. David Lammy has repeatedly refused to say whether the UK should rejoin the European Union as Labour’s Brexit civil war burst back into the open. The deputy prime minister refused five times to say whether the result of the 2016 referendum should be reversed when asked on Sky News. Meanwhile, a Labour MP said it was “absolutely brainless” for the party to even be discussing the issue because it would cost them even more support in working class areas that voted to Leave. Labour’s splits over Brexit reignited over the weekend when leadership hopeful Wes Streeting described it as “a catastrophic mistake” and said the UK should rejoin the EU. That piled pressure on his rival, Andy Burnham, who wants to be Labour’s candidate in the upcoming by-election in Makerfield, where the majority of people voted for Leave. Burnham, who told last year’s Labour conference that he wanted to see the UK back in the EU in his lifetime, wants to avoid discussing the issue during the campaign. Asked on Sky …

Speaking to The Rest is Entertainment’s Richard Osman and Marina Hyde, he said that phones have changed everything when it comes to fan interactions. “Now – phones. So if I meet someone, they’re reaching for their phone, and I say: ‘I’m sorry, I don’t do pictures.’ And that is radical these days,” he said. Sir Paul McCartney speaking to Marina Hyde and Richard Osman (The Rest is Entertainment) “I told that to Oprah – I’m name-dropping now – and she said, ‘You don’t do pictures?’ I said, ‘No.’ She said, ‘Why?’ I said, ‘I don’t want to.’ It’s as simple as that.” As for why he always declines selfie requests, the singer-songwriter said that he doesn’t want to …

Is Trump Purposely Not Calling It A War To Avoid Getting Congressional Approval? His AG Refuses To Say.

Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche and President Donald Trump. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche dodged answering whether President Donald Trump has strategically eluded calling the conflict in Iran a war so he can avoid having to get congressional approval.  Blanche couched Trump’s ongoing, mixed messages about the Iran war on Sunday’s Meet The Press after NBC’s Kristen Welker played back a clip of Trump during a Friday presser where he says that “you don’t have legal problems” if you call the conflict a “military operation” instead of a “war.” “Is the president effectively arguing that he can avoid congressional approval by avoiding using the word war?” Welker asked Blanche.  Claiming that Trump is “not effectively arguing anything except that he is trying to keep this country safe,” he replied, “We have kept Congress updated at every step of the way, consistent with what other presidents have done.”  “Trump is doing something that the past five presidents did not do,” he continued. “They promised to do it, they promised, ‘Oh, we’ll stop Iran.’ ‘Oh, Iran can …

Ksenija Horvat, RTV Slovenia director, confirmed the move to The Associated Press, stating: “We will not be broadcasting the Eurovision Song Contest.” She added, “We will be airing the film series ‘Voices of Palestine,’ featuring Palestinian documentaries and feature films.” Organisers’ December decision to allow Israel to compete prompted the walkout. Bombshell moment Starmer refuses to deny lobbying for second disgraced job | Politics | News

Sir Keir Starmer has refused to deny that Downing Street tried to give another disgraced peer a top diplomatic job. Former Foreign Office chief Sir Olly Robbins said on Tuesday that No 10 wanted him to look at “available head of mission jobs” for Lord Doyle, a former Downing Street director of communications who was later suspended from the Labour Party over his links to a convicted paedophile. At Prime Minister’s Questions, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey asked whether the PM knew his office was lobbying for an ambassadorial role for Lord Doyle and whether they were doing it on his authority. Sir Keir told MPs: “Matthew Doyle worked for many years in public service for me as Prime Minister and other ministers. “When people leave roles in any organisation, there are very often conversations about other roles they may want to apply for. In this case, nothing came of it.” Sir Ed replied: “The House and the public watching will note the Prime Minister failed to answer my question.” Sir Olly said that …
