Speaking on Tuesday afternoon, Burnham said he wanted to avoid a “two-tier England” where some regions benefit from devolution arrangements while others don’t. Outlining his “decade of personal experience” as Greater Manchester mayor, he said he spent it “turning around one of the UK’s former industrial heartlands and turning it into the fastest-growing city region in the country”. The PM said he wanted “every single place across our regions and nations to be able to do the same” as Manchester, and said he met the Liberal Democrat leader of Cornwall Council on a recent visit to the south west region. French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu on Monday announced measures to help residents of the southwest hit by wildfires rebuild their lives, after being jeered by locals dissatisfied by the government’s response to the disaster. Help will include some €12 million ($13.9 million) of aid for the Gironde and Landes regions of southwest France worst-hit by the fires, as well as fast-track processes to rebuild homes. The cost of the support measures implemented by the government following the fires in Gironde could eventually exceed €100 million, he said. “We could very quickly reach amounts exceeding €100 million euros. We’re talking about quite substantial sums,” he said, citing in particular exemptions from social security contributions and property taxes for businesses affected by the fires or located in evacuated areas. The UK is set to see heavy rain with the Met Office issuing a thunderstorm warning for some areas. The rain comes after the UK has battled with scorching temperatures reaching up to 38C. With hardly any rain this summer, in vast parts of the country, grass has turned brown, with some Brits desperate to see some wetter weather to cool things off. But good news: new weather maps from forecaster WXCharts show that at 6am on August 18, rain will stretch across huge swathes of England. There will be between 0.1 and 3mm of rainfall, which will hit the north east of England alongside the Midlands and London. Not only this, but Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, the Peak District, Oxford, Cambridge, Leicester and Newcastle will also see wetter weather. In the south west, Cornwall and Devon will avoid the rain. As for Wales, the coast and the north will see some rain, but most places will stay dry. “Plenty of very warm sunshine on Friday, though some rain in the far northwest,” the Met Office forecast for the weekend said on Thursday (July 23). “Turning cooler over the weekend with some rain moving southeast across the UK. Breezy at times.” No weather warnings are in place, but any plans for barbecue might have to change as the deluge will hit millions. The forecasts confirm eight regions are expected to see heavy rainfall this weekend. They are: Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, North west England, South west England, North east England, Yorkshire and the Humber, Midlands, and East Anglia and central England. While London and the south east will be spared heavy downpours, scattered showers are expected to hit the capital and surrounding counties. HONG KONG, June 12 – China warned communities ⁠in ⁠its northwestern Xinjiang and nearby ⁠regions on Friday to prepare for “extreme floods” this summer, driven ​by abnormally high temperatures, heavy rainfall, and rapid glacier melt. Xinjiang’s Taklamakan Desert, China’s largest, ‌experienced its first flood of ‌the year in early June, state broadcaster CCTV reported on Friday, showing footage ⁠of water ⁠filling the typically arid dunes. While the Taklamakan has experienced similar floods ​since 2021, they typically occur in August, when temperatures peak. However, temperatures have surged much earlier this year. On June 12, Xinjiang was 7.3 degrees hotter than average for this ​time of year, reaching 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit), according to Reuters Climate ⁠Monitor. Its atmosphere races around the planet in more than 20 east-west jet streams, with winds reaching about 100 meters per second, more than three times faster than the strongest jet stream on Earth. Those bands of motion, visible in the planet’s bright stripes and turbulent storms, have been watched for centuries. But only recently have scientists begun to pin down how far those winds reach and what keeps them going inside the solar system’s largest planet. That question matters because Jupiter is not just a bigger Earth. It has no solid surface, rotates in about 10 hours, and is made mostly of a relatively uniform mix of gases. In some ways that makes it simpler to study. In other ways, it makes the planet harder to understand, because the atmosphere blends into the deep interior.
