Nick Reiner, who is accused of killing his parents — acclaimed director Rob Reiner and film producer Michele Reiner — is asking a Los Angeles court to release funds from a trust his parents established for him, to pay for his legal defense. A petition filed by Reiner’s civil attorneys in a Los Angeles County court on Monday says that trustees overseeing the funds have denied them to him without legal justification, and the 32-year-old defendant needs them. “Time is of the essence,” he told the trustee earlier this year. In December 2025, Reiner was arrested on suspicion of murdering his parents days after the beloved Hollywood power couple was found slain at their Brentwood home. Family friends told The Times that Rob and Nick got into an argument at Conan O’Brien’s holiday party just hours before the couple’s murder. Many party guests noticed Nick acting strangely, the friends said. Cate Blanchett is diving deeper into the fashion business — on the big screen. The Oscar-winning actress and her production company Dirty Pictures with Andrew Upton and Coco Francini have boarded the documentary adaptation of Dana Thomas’ book Fashionopolis: The Price of Fast Fashion and the Future of Clothes, being directed by noted auteur Reiner Holzemer. The project, which is moving into the financing phase, investigates the $3 trillion global fashion industry by examining the “environmental and human cost of an industry built on speed and scale while spotlighting the designers and innovators reshaping the system,” per the filmmakers. Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty to the killings of his parents, Hollywood director Rob Reiner and producer Michele Singer Reiner, in a Los Angeles court Monday. The 32-year-old’s plea to charges of two counts of first-degree murder, with the special circumstance of multiple murders, was entered by his public defender, Kimberly Greene. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life without possibility of parole or the death penalty. Nick Reiner is seen at a movie premiere in September of last year. A not-guilty plea is common for criminal defendants at this stage of the case, as The Associated Press reported. He had been set to enter a plea last month in the December stabbings but his defense attorney withdrew from the case during his last court hearing.
