Musk says Tesla to ‘open source’ Model S and X, but prior release makes us skeptical

Elon Musk says Tesla plans to “open source” the Model S and Model X, and he’s pointing to the original Roadster as the template. The problem is Tesla’s Roadster release amounted to eight files on GitHub plus five document packages behind a login, with no open-source license attached to any of it. What Tesla actually put out for the Roadster In November 2023, Musk posted that “all design & engineering of the original Tesla Roadster is now fully open source,” and added, “Whatever we have, you now have.” We covered the release at the time. The full inventory is short. The teslamotors/roadster repo holds five CAN database (.dbc) files covering the Roadster 1.5 and 2.0 ESS and PEM buses, about 339 KB in total, plus a 309 MB diagnostic software ISO and two PDF quick-guides. That’s everything, aside from a README and a .gitattributes file. Advertisement – scroll for more content The commit history is worth a look. The DBC files went up on December 2, 2022, nearly a year before Musk announced any of …

Netflix denies Michael Jackson documentary was nearly pulled days before release

Get the latest entertainment news, reviews and star-studded interviews with our Independent Culture email Get the latest entertainment news with our free Culture newsletter Get the latest entertainment news with our free Culture newsletter Netflix have denied that they almost pulled their controversial docuseries Michael Jackson: The Verdict days before it was released in June. The three-part documentary from director Nick Green focused on the King of Pop’s 2005 trial, which eventually saw him acquitted of multiple counts of child molestation. Variety reported earlier today that sources claimed Netflix executives debated pulling the series from air just a week before it arrived on the streaming service. “It would have been very embarrassing to pull the series after you drop the trailer — it would have been a huge story,” a source told the publication. The source claimed that executives got “cold feet” due to concerns that Jackson’s estate could potentially sue over claims made in the film, rather than worries about fan backlash. A docuseries about Michael Jackson’s sex abuse trial in 2005 was released …

‘Cowardly’ rapist on run after mistaken jail release sentenced to 18 years | UK | News

Bernadin Dedic has been jailed for 18 years (Image: Metropolitan Police/PA Wire) A “cowardly” rapist on the run after being accidentally set free from jail has been sentenced in his absence to 18 years in prison. Bernadin Dedic, 48, was convicted last month of repeatedly raping a woman he had held at knifepoint and threatened to kill, in an ordeal that lasted several hours. Dedic was remanded in custody at HMP Wormwood Scrubs ahead of his trial, but mistakenly set free in February when a court official wrongly recorded that bail had been granted. After being release, Dedic travelled to his native Bosnia and refused to return to Britain to face his trial. The court heard evidence that Dedic had drunk wine and snorted cocaine before holding the victim at knifepoint, cutting off her clothes, and threatening to kill her and himself. On Friday, Dedic was sentenced in his absence at Isleworth Crown Court, with Judge Hannah Duncan saying he is “refusing to return to the UK for his sentencing, just as he refused to …

Black Forest Labs launches FLUX 3 capable of generating images and 20-second video with audio — but in limited release to start

Black Forest Labs launches FLUX 3 capable of generating images and 20-second video with audio — but in limited release to start

Black Forest Labs (BFL) is expanding its FLUX family beyond image generation with today’s launch of FLUX 3, a multimodal frontier model trained to understand and generate images, or combined audio/video clips up to 20 seconds from a single prompt — and to extend the same underlying architecture to robotic vision and actions. The Freiburg, Germany-based AI lab says FLUX 3 is jointly trained across those modalities rather than assembling separate image, video and audio models behind a common interface. That distinction is central to the company’s pitch: BFL wants enterprises to think about creative generation, simulation, computer use and robotics as connected applications of a single capability it calls visual intelligence — models, in the company’s words, “that can perceive, predict, and act across physical and digital environments.” This release marks BFL’s first public video generation model. FLUX 3 will be offered through four product lines: FLUX 3 Video, FLUX 3 Image, FLUX 3 Action and the upcoming, open source FLUX 3 Dev. FLUX 3 Video, with optional native audio generation, and FLUX 3 …

PC Harper’s police chief urges Burnham to stop killers’ early release | UK | News

The boss of PC Andrew Harper’s police force has taken aim at Labour’s early release of prisoners policy after it was revealed that two of the officers killed could be let out. Jason Hogg, the chief constable of Thames Valley Police, has urged the Prime Minister to change the law and stop Albert Bowers and Jessie Cole from being let loose. Under the scheme, the two killers could be let out halfway through their sentences – provided they don’t break any rules whilst inside. Mr Hogg called the idea they could be let out early “wrong”, with his comments following damning criticism from PC Harper’s widow, who called it “deplorable”. PC Harper died just 28-years-old after he had investigated the theft of a quad bike back in 2019. Bowers and Cole tried to flee the scene in a car driven by a third man, and the officer was dragged more than a mile after his ankles got caught in a tow rope. Bowers and Cole were locked up for 13 years for manslaughter. Andy Burnham, …
