It was a small glitch in a ceremony designed to show that government’s quest to disarm drug-trafficking guerrillas is finally paying off. But depending on the outcome of today’s presidential runoff election, this may be Colombia’s last farewell-to-arms ceremony for some time to come. Polls predict that Abelardo De La Espriella, a far-right criminal defense attorney and political newcomer will defeat Iván Cepeda, a left-wing senator from the ruling party and a protégé of outgoing President Gustavo Petro, in a contest reflecting a …

Israel and Hezbollah say they agree to truce despite renewed attacks

Israel and Hezbollah agreed a ceasefire on June 19 after deadly exchanges between the two sides in Lebanon put the deal to end the Middle East war under strain. At least 20 people were killed in Lebanon in fresh strikes, as well four Israeli soldiers. In response, the far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said “all of Lebanon must burn”. FRANCE 24’s Noga Tarnopolsky tells us more. Keywords for this article Source link

Renewed fighting between Israel and Hezbollah could scupper the U.S-Iran deal

Renewed fighting between Israel and Hezbollah could scupper the U.S-Iran deal

Iran’s threat to strike Israel Sunday came in response to Israeli airstrikes on a southern suburb of Lebanon’s capital, Beirut. Israel said it was retaliating against Hezbollah attacks on the north of the country earlier that day. It was the second three-way exchange of fire in a week: During the previous tit-for-tat attacks, Iran followed through on its threats and fired missiles at Israel, most of which were intercepted and caused no casualties. As praise for Trump’s announcement rolled in from world leaders, Vice President JD Vance told CNBC on Monday that Israel “is going to have a seat at the table” and there were elements inside the country “that like the deal quite a bit.” But by then, it was already clear that if Israel does accept the deal, it will be under protest. Defense Minister Israel Katz said Monday morning that the Israel Defense Forces would not withdraw from the multiple theaters of war where it is deployed. He said in a statement that together with Netanyahu, he was “leading a clear policy …

‘Widow’s Bay’ Renewed for Season 2 at Apple TV

‘Widow’s Bay’ Renewed for Season 2 at Apple TV

Apple TV is booking a return trip to Widow’s Bay. The streamer has ordered a second season of the show, a horror comedy starring Matthew Rhys as the mayor of a New England town whose residents all — save for him — believe the town is cursed. The renewal comes six days before the show concludes its first season; the finale is scheduled for June 17. Apple TV has also signed Widow’s Bay creator Katie Dippold to a multi-year overall deal. She’ll continue to serve as showrunner of the series and also develop new projects. Widow’s Bay has earned critical praise (and some famous fans) over the course of its first season. Dippold told The Hollywood Reporter that she’s had the show in her head for nearly 20 years — and almost sold a version it to Amazon in 2013 before pulling it back. “I just had this bad feeling,” she said. “I put a pin in it. I just knew it wasn’t ready. I knew I hadn’t thought enough about the show or the world.” …

Renewed U.S. strikes put Iran talks on verge of collapse

Renewed U.S. strikes put Iran talks on verge of collapse

WASHINGTON — Precarious talks to end the war with Iran appeared close to collapse on Tuesday as renewed fighting across the region threatened to derail fragile progress toward a comprehensive settlement. U.S. strikes against targets in southern Iran — the first since a ceasefire was declared in the war seven weeks ago — coupled with escalating attacks by Israel in Lebanon have undermined optimism that an agreement was within reach. The attacks occurred just hours after U.S. and Iranian diplomats arrived in Qatar for peace talks. Iran’s top negotiators left Doha on Tuesday without comment. News of the strikes, and threats of retaliation by Tehran, sent global oil prices soaring back to more than $100 a barrel. U.S. Central Command described Monday’s actions as “self-defense strikes” that were restrained and modest in scope, targeting missile launch sites and Iranian boats “attempting to emplace mines” in the Strait of Hormuz. But the attack came as President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio had been projecting confidence that a framework agreement to end the war could be reached …

Trump, nearing 80, faces renewed health scrutiny

Trump, nearing 80, faces renewed health scrutiny

President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Walter Reed National Military Medical Center this week for what the White House describes as a routine medical and dental evaluation, renewing attention around the president’s health and the growing political scrutiny surrounding presidential age and transparency. The White House announced earlier this month that Trump “will have his annual physical on May 26 at Walter Reed,” framing the visit as part of standard ongoing care. But the appointment arrives amid continued public discussion surrounding Trump’s physical condition, stamina, and increasingly frequent medical checkups. Trump, who turns 80 next month, has repeatedly defended his health in public remarks, often boasting about “acing” cognitive tests and presenting his medical evaluations as evidence of fitness for office. Questions surrounding presidential age and capability became a defining issue in recent election cycles, and Trump now faces many of the same forms of scrutiny that have surrounded other aging presidents. The latest Walter Reed visit will reportedly mark Trump’s third publicized consultation with medical experts since returning to office, according to previous …

All the NBC shows renewed and canceled for 2026 – and the one show still on the bubble

All the NBC shows renewed and canceled for 2026 – and the one show still on the bubble

NBC‘s network season is over for another year, and eight TV shows have been renewed, three canceled, and one remaining on the bubble. Surprising no-one, the network’s two mainstay franchises – One Chicago and Law And Order – have been renewed, while there was some heartbreak for fans of one freshman comedy, a show that I binged in one sitting and thought had huge potential. “Honestly, we have a very, very tight schedule. Because we have a lot of sports, for our entertainment time periods, we had to actually give up on some shows that we really love to make room to launch our future potential hits. So we made room for four, we could have done with less, very hard for us to do more,” said Jeff Bader, NBCUniversal’s President of Program Planning Strategy, of the decision. New shows for the 2026/2027 season are dramas The Rockford Files and Line of Fire, and comedies Sunset P.I. and Newlyweds. Below is an easy-to-view list of what is returning and what has been cancelled. Comment with your reactions – which …

Lebanon’s economy struggles under renewed war and global fuel crisis | Israel attacks Lebanon News

Beirut, Lebanon – Shortly after Mario Habib opened his barber shop in 2006, a war broke out between Israel and Hezbollah. Twenty years on, he’s living through another war. The shop has become a fixture of his Furn el-Shebbak neighbourhood. Mario, a 51-year-old with tattoos and short black hair, slips in jokes as he cuts his clients’ hair, a steady stream visiting throughout the day. Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list But Mario has noticed that he isn’t as busy as he used to be. Israel’s war on Lebanon and the US-Israel war on Iran are damaging Lebanon’s economy. Prices are rising as a result of supply issues – particularly of oil from the Gulf region, which has largely stopped since the US and Iran blockaded the Strait of Hormuz. And, in Lebanon, which had already been suffering from an economic crisis, there is less work, and people are losing their jobs. “The price of running the generator is killing me,” he said. “Everything has gotten more expensive, the price of petrol doubled, …
