Rick Baker, who holds a record for being a seven-time Oscar winner in the makeup field, now also holds a Golden Leopard, which he can add to the collection of fantastical creatures he has created over the course of his career. The 79th edition of the Locarno Film Festival will have Oscar royalty in the house on Wednesday evening – well, on its big 8,000-seat square, the Piazza Grande, to be precise. It will bestow its Vision Award, presented by Ticinomoda, upon Rick Baker, a seven-time Oscar winner, a record in the makeup and hairstyling field, and the creator behind some of cinema’s most fantastical creatures. While at the Swiss festival, Baker is also presenting two key films from his career, namely An American Werewolf in London (1981) and The Nutty Professor (1996). During a panel for the upcoming sequel to the 1987 “Star Wars” parody film “Spaceballs” at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, Rick Moranis, who played the hilarious spoof on Darth Vader, made a special appearance. The 73-year-old, who is reprising his role for the sequel, donned his iconic enormous helmet from the original film and walked through the packed house at Hall H of the San Diego Convention Center. Years ago on “Rick and Morty,” President Andre Curtis fumed that he can’t coexist with Rick Sanchez, a living god who won’t submit to his will. Giving the man his own spinoff is one way to fix that. In “President Curtis,” America’s POTUS is an egomaniacal ’80s-vintage superhero who treats the White House as his lair. That’s not too far removed from the real commander-in-chief’s mindset, but any suspicions that co-creators Dan Harmon and James Siciliano are parodying Trump 2.0 are off base. The show’s only satirical tool is Curtis himself, a myopic blowhard (voiced by the charismatic Keith David) who, to paraphrase one skeptic, uses taxpayer dollars to play Batman. Flanked by his cyborg chief of staff (Stephanie Beatriz) and a half-leprechaun special agent (Jim Rash), Curtis would rather police America than govern it. (To that end, the show’s “Hill Street Blues”-adjacent theme is another genius grace note.) Laughs and an appreciation of Rick Moranis were plentiful as Amazon MGM’s Spaceballs: The New One, a sequel to the 1987 Mel Brooks Star Wars parody, flew into San Diego Comic-Con’s cavernous Hall H Friday afternoon. One of the panel’s biggest attractions was seeing Moranis, the comedian who appeared in seminal 1980s films such as Ghostbusters andHoney, I Shrunk the Kid, make his first ever appearance. The actor played villain Dark Helmet in the original 1987 movie but has been largely absent from movies and television for most of this century, so his return with the Spaceballs sequel is headline making.
