NEW YORK (AP) — St. John’s says Hall of Fame basketball coach Rick Pitino has signed a new agreement that will keep him under contract with the school through the end of this decade. Pitino was hired in March 2023 and given a six-year contract through 2029. Several media outlets, citing anonymous sources, reported Sunday his restructured deal includes an additional year through the 2029-30 season and a raise that will make him the second-highest paid coach in the Big East behind Dan Hurley at UConn. “We’re thrilled that Coach Pitino has signed a new agreement to remain at St. John’s, a deal that will keep him in Queens through the end of the decade,” athletic director Ed Kull said in a statement. “This extension reflects our strong confidence in his leadership, vision, and commitment to our student-athletes. “Coach Pitino has changed the culture of our community and we want his presence to be felt on this campus for years to come. When I ask Thundercat what his life was like before music, he shrugs. “There is nothing prior to music,” the funk virtuoso tells me. Fair enough. Thundercat, born Stephen Lee Bruner, is a Grammy-award winning bassist was raised in Compton in a household full of drummers—his father was a drummer for some of Motown’s finest acts, and his mother was also a percussionist and flautist. His brother, Ronald Bruner Jr., has played for Kamasi Washington, Snoop Dogg, and Kendrick Lamar; both Bruner brothers appeared on To Pimp a Butterfly. Yet even if you’ve lis­tened close­ly to every song on which he’s been cred­it­ed as a pro­duc­er over the past 45 years, you may have trou­ble pin­ning down what, exact­ly, the work of Rick Rubin is. Though his résumé includes such pro­fes­sion­al achieve­ments as co-found­ing both Def Jam Record­ings and Amer­i­can Record­ings, as well as shar­ing the pres­i­den­cy of Colum­bia Records for a stretch, he’s become best known in recent years as a kind of bare­foot sage of cre­ativ­i­ty.
