Putin humiliated as mystery blast rocks region miles behind frontline | World | News

A huge explosion lit up the skies above Russia’s Belgorod region on Monday, sending a vast plume of smoke into the air and triggering reports of injuries and widespread damage. Dramatic footage shared online showed a towering cloud rising above the area as debris appeared to fall back to the ground following the blast. The exact cause remains unclear. Local reports initially suggested a Russian aerial bomb may have fallen in the area, while later accounts speculated that a Ukrainian drone strike could have hit an ammunition storage site, setting off a major detonation. Neither explanation had been independently confirmed. Regional officials described the incident as a “detonation”, while emergency services continued to assess the situation. What damage was reported at Belgorod? According to Belgorod operational staff, the blast caused damage in and around the village of Belovskoye. Officials said five women suffered concussion injuries and were taken to Belgorod City Hospital No. 2 for treatment. The force of the explosion reportedly damaged three apartment blocks, more than 20 private homes and an office building. …

Eagle Rock’s Read Books launched revolt against Los Angeles landlords

Eagle Rock’s Read Books launched revolt against Los Angeles landlords

On a Tuesday evening in Eagle Rock, used-bookstore owners Jeremy and Debbie Kaplan were closing up for the day when a stranger rushed through the entrance. He tossed an envelope onto the counter, said something like: “Building’s been sold,” and slipped out. Inside the envelope, the Kaplans found a 30-day notice: The shop’s $1,200 monthly rent would be increasing to $2,805 on April 1, they were required to decide whether they would accept the more than 133% price hike a month in advance, and they’d need to agree to a three- to five-year lease if so. The letter arrived Feb. 17, which meant the Kaplans had 11 days to accept the new landlord’s terms or leave. “We couldn’t even consider it,” Jeremy Kaplan said. “It would be suicide.” The couple looked around the 680-square-foot shop. From the floor to ceiling, more than 20,000 books were crammed every which way into shelves they’d built and stained themselves nearly 20 years before. “My first reaction was panic,” he said. “How are we going to move out of …

France ponders failure to protect children as school abuse scandal rocks Paris

French police carried out a wave of arrests over suspicions of child abuse at schools in central Paris on Wednesday, dramatically accelerating the authorities’ response to a scandal that has shaken the French capital and undermined faith in its schools. Officers from the Brigade de protection des mineurs, a child protection unit, detained 16 people with links to a nursery school in the 7th arrondissement (district) of Paris, one of several establishments rocked by allegations of child abuse in the capital’s after-school care system, known as périscolaire. The suspects were held on an array of charges including “rape of minors”, “sexual assault of minors” and “violence against minors”, according to the public prosecutor’s office. Several had already been suspended from their jobs following multiple reports of abuse and the airing of a documentary that contained scenes of violence filmed using a hidden camera. We could generate hydrogen from rocks while storing CO2 in them

We could generate hydrogen from rocks while storing CO2 in them

The Carbfix facility in Iceland Oksana Baliukeviciene/Alamy We desperately need clean hydrogen for processes that cannot be powered by renewable electricity – and it might be possible to generate vast quantities from rocks deep underground while locking away carbon dioxide at the same time. Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have shown that this process works for one common rock type in lab studies. They now want to work with companies on field trials. “We hope to demonstrate that we will be able to generate hydrogen economically while sequestering CO2,” says team member Orsolya Gelencsér. It might even be possible to generate geothermal energy at the same time, she says. Burning hydrogen produces only water, so doesn’t cause global warming. Hydrogen could therefore play a major part in achieving net zero, for instance by helping to decarbonise industrial processes such as fertiliser production and steel-making. The problem is that almost all hydrogen is currently made from fossil fuels, meaning lots of CO2 is emitted during its production. One way to avoid these emissions …

Putting CO2 into rocks and getting hydrogen out is climate double win

NASA’s Curiosity Rover Got Its Drill Stuck on a Rock. Here’s How They Freed It

NASA’s Curiosity Rover Got Its Drill Stuck on a Rock. Here’s How They Freed It

While it has enabled many exciting discoveries, the Curiosity Rover has also encountered its share of setbacks. The latest left NASA engineers speechless. On April 25, Curiosity drilled into a rock nicknamed “Atacama” to collect a sample. When the rover retracted the robotic arm after drilling, the entire rock unexpectedly lifted off the Martian surface—all 28.6 pounds of it. While other Curiosity drilling operations have caused cracks or breaks in the upper layers of Martian rocks during the rover’s nearly 14-year mission, this is the first time one has remained stuck to the sleeve that surrounds the drill’s rotating tip. As the space agency itself recounts, it was the black-and-white obstacle-detection cameras mounted on the front of the rover’s chassis that captured this peculiar “accident” in a sequence of images that allowed engineers to get to work immediately to free it, moving its robotic arm and operating the drill repeatedly over several days. Engineers initially tried to remove the rock by vibrating the drill, to no avail. On April 29, they adjusted the position of …

“Doesn’t Look Good”: Explosion Rocks Major New Orleans-Area Refinery As Fuel Markets Tighten

“Doesn’t Look Good”: Explosion Rocks Major New Orleans-Area Refinery As Fuel Markets Tighten

A fire broke out Friday afternoon at PBF Energy’s Chalmette refinery outside New Orleans, according to the facility. Reuters cited people familiar with the incident who said the 190,000-barrel-per-day Chalmette refinery suffered an explosion on Friday afternoon. The explosion can be traced to a reformer heater used to convert refining byproducts into octane-boosting components added to unfinished gasoline to make premium and mid-grade fuel blends. The 190,000-barrel-per-day refinery is one of the major Gulf Coast refineries because it produces gasoline, distillates, and specialty chemicals, so any sustained outage can impact regional fuel balances, especially gasoline and diesel supply. “Fence-line monitoring confirms no off-site impacts,” according to the message from the refinery. “Everyone working in the area is safe and accounted for.” I have been in direct contact with local officials and law enforcement on the ground regarding the situation at the Chalmette Refinery. We are actively monitoring developments and working closely with parish leaders and first responders to ensure public safety and provide any… — Governor Jeff Landry (@LAGovJeffLandry) May 8, 2026 Videos of the …
