‘Moulin Rouge’ Hits $2.3M In Closing Week

Moulin Rouge! shot up to $2.3 million in its final week on Broadway, marking the highest gross the musical has seen in several years on Broadway.  The show played its final performance Aug. 30, played to more than 100 percent capacity, with average paid admission of $223.46, the highest of the industry last week. In its final week, the musical welcomed back Aaron Tveit as a cast member for most of its performances, with other original cast members joining on stage for a number during the final performance. This is an impressive tally for the musical, which recently saw Megan Thee Stallion star in the show, even though it pales in comparison to the $2.7 million the musical brought in over 9 performances over Christmas week in 2019. This was the highest grossing musical of the week, followed by Hamilton with $2 million, MJ with $1.7 million, The Lion King with $1.59 million and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which recently announced the upcoming addition to Rupert Grint to the cast, with $1.57 million  Paranormal …

Grosses for Moulin Rouge! jumped up by more than $1 million last week, reaching $2.2 million, as original cast member Aaron Tveit rejoined the cast for the end of the show’s run.  The average ticket price jumped to $210, the highest of the industry last week, and placed the musical as the highest grossing show of the week. The musical is set to play its final performance Aug. 30, after opening on Broadway in 2019. Tveit won the 2021 Tony Award for best performance by a leading actor in a musical for creating the role of Christian in the show.  Paranormal Activity played its first full week of eight performances last week. While the previews were heavily comped for press tickets, the play pulled in $729,250 and played to 100 percent capacity. The play is set for an official press opening Aug. 25, with a special gala performance Sept. 15. PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — Cambodian artist Bou Meng, one of only seven people known to have survived a notorious Khmer Rouge torture center in the Southeast Asian country in the late 1970s, has died. He was 85. His ability to paint portraits of then-leader Pol Pot was why he was kept alive. The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, a U.N.-backed tribunal that sought to try Khmer Rouge leaders for genocide and other crimes against humanity, said he died late Friday of age-related illness. “The passing of Mr. Bou Meng represents the loss of an important historical witness to the grave crimes committed during the brutal Khmer Rouge regime, particularly to the history and tragedy that took place at the former S-21 Security Center,” referring to the prison, also known as Tuol Sleng, where he had been held for almost two years starting in 1977. Megan Thee Stallion is back on stage in Moulin Rouge! The Musical. The Grammy Award-winning rapper returned to the spotlight inside New York’s Al Hirschfeld Theatre on Thursday evening after missing Wednesday’s performance and exiting mid-show on Tuesday night after falling ill. At the time, her rep said she was rushed to the hospital where she was being treated. On Wednesday morning, Megan’s rep shared a statement with The Hollywood Reporter to explain the medical emergency and eventual diagnosis. “On Tuesday evening, Megan was transported to a local hospital to undergo a medical evaluation after experiencing concerning symptoms. Megan Thee Stallion is hospitalized in New York City after falling ill during a showing of Moulin Rouge! The Musical and exiting the show mid-performance. “During Tuesday night’s production, Megan started feeling very ill and was promptly transported to a local hospital, where her symptoms are currently being evaluated,” her representative, Didier Morais, tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We will share additional updates as more information becomes available.” The Grammy Award-winning rapper just had her big debut in the show at New York’s Al Hirschfeld Theatre in the role of Zidler, marking not only her first ever Broadway performance but also the first time a woman has performed the role in the beloved and long-running jukebox musical. The two-time Oscar winner is currently running through his presentation for the 98th Academy Awards ceremony, which will presumably carry on the tradition of the Best Actor and Actress winner of years past playing a role in awarding this year’s winner. This was the scene inside the over-air conditioned Dolby Theater on an unseasonably warm Saturday afternoon in Hollywood, where dozens of stagehands bustled around and a handful of Brody’s A-list peers drifted in and out to rehearse for this year’s Oscars telecast.
