Half marathon organisers apologise after Coventry route was set too long | UK News

Runners who completed the Coventry Half Marathon on Sunday have been told by organisers there was an error measuring the length of the route. Run For All, which operates events across the UK, admitted in a statement that the race “was longer than 13.1 miles”. The organisation offered an apology and explained how the mistake happened. It said an initial investigation found a turning point was wrongly positioned by more than 250m, which meant the route was longer by over half a kilometre. Run For All said: “We are disappointed that this has happened and apologise unreservedly that this has occurred and we take full responsibility for the error. “Our initial investigation shows that the turning point was positioned incorrectly with it being 256m out, which has resulted in the route therefore being 512m long overall.” Runners have been told their results have been updated to provide a time equivalent to a 13.1-mile (21km) finish. Participants have also been told they will be offered half-price entry to next year’s run. Organisers added they would be …

‘Space worms’ are en route to the International Space Station

The Artemis II astronauts were back on Earth for less than a day before worms took their place in space. The space worms launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on April 11, aboard NASA’s Commercial Resupply Services 24 mission (CRS-24) and are on a journey to the International Space Station (ISS). Although uncrewed, the roughly 11,000 pounds of cargo aboard the Northrop Grumman Cygnus XL spacecraft contained at least few living organisms, including a vat filled with tiny Caenorhabditis elegans nematodes. Scientists at the University of Exeter in England are relying on the C. elegans worms to investigate a major hurdle facing long-duration spacefaring—safeguarding the health of human explorers. While April 12 marked the 65th anniversary of the first person to reach space, the record for longest time spent in space still remains the 371-day tenure achieved by NASA astronaut and former ISS crewmember Frank Rubio in 2023. Barely a year in microgravity has serious effects on his body that …

England route to 2026 World Cup final: Three Lions could face Brazil after fixtures finalised

England route to 2026 World Cup final: Three Lions could face Brazil after fixtures finalised

England have discovered their likeliest routes to the 2026 World Cup final as the remaining berths at this summer’s expanded tournament were confirmed by qualification play-off ties this week. Having long since booked their own ticket to football’s biggest show, the Three Lions laboured through a pair of winless friendlies against Uruguay and Japan during the March international break. Elsewhere in Europe and around the globe, nations contested win-or-go-home bouts aiming to secure one of the final available spots at this year’s World Cup. Four-time winners Italy came up short and will miss out on a third successive World Cup after losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina, with Denmark similarly falling in a penalty shoot-out, theirs against the Czech Republic. But what does all of that mean for England? ” loading=”lazy” class=”sc-eqUAAy kRUyJB”/> England were beaten by Japan after drawing with Uruguay The FA via Getty Images Past the group stage, we’ve used world rankings as the deciding factor when listing England’s possible opponents. Bab al-Mandab strait: Iran’s Houthi allies enter the conflict, raising fears over key trade route

Bab al-Mandab strait: Iran’s Houthi allies enter the conflict, raising fears over key trade route

Iran launched waves of missiles at Israel on Monday as Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthis carried out their second attack since the start of the US-Israeli war, with the Israeli military saying two drones launched from Yemen were intercepted early on the morning of March 30. The Houthis entered the conflict for the first time two days earlier, firing missiles at Israel on Saturday in an escalation that has raised fears they could also move to disrupt shipping in the Red Sea, sending oil prices – already up more than 50 percent in a month – even higher. Following the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf, Iran has repeatedly threatened to target the Bab al-Mandeb strait in the Gulf of Aden, south of the Red Sea. “Insecurity in other straits, including the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Red Sea, is one of the options” for resisting US threats, an Iranian military source told Tasnim, an Iranian news agency, on March 21. A response to US threats Iran will broaden its retaliatory measures if the United States or Israel were to launch a ground offensive in the region, Tasnim reported. Military retaliation still appears to be …

Why ‘slow travel’ is en route to becoming the ultimate 2026 wellness trend

Why ‘slow travel’ is en route to becoming the ultimate 2026 wellness trend

The idea that the journey matters more than the destination has never rung more true – and we’re fairly certain that neither Ralph Waldo Emerson nor Aerosmith imagined it unfolding aboard a Belmond train. Wellness has infiltrated every corner of modern life, and now it’s transforming how we get from A to B. Savouring the journey itself – what the industry calls “slow travel” – is one of the hottest wellness trends, according to the Global Wellness Institute. Dubbed “wellness on the line”, it’s helping to fuel booms in the cruise and rail markets. But this isn’t a cursory pummel from a massage chair at the airport or a hot tub on the top deck. Today’s journeys offer haute wellness with cutting-edge welltech, from cryotherapy chambers to circadian-reset treatments. “In 2026, the frontier of advanced wellness has moved far beyond spas and retreats. It’s now integral to how consumers choose and value travel itself,” says Seyi Oduwole, travel and hospitality foresight analyst at The Future Laboratory. “The idea of travel as escape has matured into a …

Iran issues Suez Canal trade route blockade threat in response to US strikes

Iran issues Suez Canal trade route blockade threat in response to US strikes

Iran is threatening to block one of the most important shipping routes in the world. The nation revealed it is ready to block the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which lies between the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea through the Suez Canal. It is a major route allowing much of the world’s shipping to pass through. Donald Trump is already facing a backlash back home with no end in sight to the Middle East conflict, The Mirror reports. The Strait of Hormuz is already allowing little traffic as Iran is peppering the vital 24-mile waterway with naval mines, paralysing international trade and sending fuel costs sky-high. An unnamed military source told Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency that attacks could be launched at ships passing through the Bab al-Mandab Strait in response to US operations on its territory or islands. Washington is preparing for the arrival of US combat forces in the Middle East that could be used on the ground in the Iran. A strike group anchored by the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli drew closer …

EVs are the #1 route to energy independence

EVs are the #1 route to energy independence

With the news of the US and Israel’s actions in Iran in the last ten days, which caused oil prices to surge by +50%, we are reminded again of how reducing oil demand can lead to less conflict and more energy independence – and electric vehicles are every country’s best bet for getting there. Ten days ago, US dictator Donald Trump, who cannot legally hold US office, joined Israel in an attack on Iran, killing many of the country’s leadership and also murdering hundreds of schoolgirls, among thousands of other civilian deaths. US republican leadership has stated the goal of the attack was “to make a ton of money” by stealing the country’s oil. In response to the unwarranted attacks, Iran declared that it would close the Strait of Hormuz. This is a narrow chokepoint at the end of the Persian Gulf where 20% of the world’s oil passes through, and it’s all within miles of Iran’s coastline, offering the nation easy options for stopping traffic from large oil tankers. Ancient Andean parrot trade route stretched over 300 miles

Ancient Andean parrot trade route stretched over 300 miles

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. Ancient parrots really got around. A new analysis of their DNA found that humans transported living Amazonian macaw parrots across the Andes mountains to coastal Peru hundreds of years before the Inca Empire. The findings are detailed in a study published today in the journal Nature Communications, and reveal a highly sophisticated and long-distance bird trading network across deserts, highlands, and rainforests. A team of researchers from Peru, Spain, the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia analyzed parrot feathers that were discovered at Pachacamac in present-day Peru. The village on the central coast was a major religious center for the Andean civilization and was first inhabited about 200 BCE. This site is home to the Temple of the Sun and Oracle of Pachacamac, which the early Spanish explorers wrote about. Pachacamac is also far outside the parrots’ native rainforest range.  “Through combining ancient DNA sequencing, isotope chemistry and computational landscape modelling, we have been able to trace how and …

This Ubuntu-based distro might be the easiest Windows escape route yet

This Ubuntu-based distro might be the easiest Windows escape route yet

One of the things that makes switching from Windows really difficult is habit. After years of using the operating system, you have built muscle memory that helps you scale through the day in the most efficient way. Even some of the best Linux distros for Windows users underestimate the significance of this. I found a lesser-known Linux distro that actually gets it. For the first time in years, when I want to talk about the best distros for Windows users, I may no longer default to Linux Mint, Zorin OS, and Ubuntu. There is now AnduinOS, and its resemblance to Windows 11 is uncanny. It mirrors Windows where it actually counts A behavioral sense of familiarity After installing AnduinOS, the first boot was disarming. It felt like I was staring at Windows 11, just with a different skin. The layout was an almost exact clone of Windows 11. I did not need to Google anything to understand where to find whatever I needed. After years on Windows, it immediately felt like I had been using …
