Ann Rule: From Ted Bundy’s Confidante to Crime Chronicler

Ann Rule: From Ted Bundy’s Confidante to Crime Chronicler

In 2002, I interviewed Ann Rule, a bestselling true crime writer. Her first book in 1980, The Stranger Beside Me, featured her relationship with serial killer Ted Bundy, from working with him on a crisis hotline to supporting his claim of innocence to realizing he’d profoundly duped her. Although she was best known for this association, she strove to shed it. She developed a full body of work and a unique approach that merits recognition. Journalist Cathy Scott’s unflinching new biography, First Lady of Murder, analyzes the late author’s process. Ann Rule’s Unique Writing Approach and Interview Style Rule called herself a “psychological detective.” She’d learned from story immersion and empathic attunement how to make people feel heard. She developed her approach by watching detectives, attorneys, and courtroom personnel at work, and by visiting crime scenes and interviewing victims and perpetrators. Immersion allowed her to see a story from within and hook readers with her own emotional engagement. “I write it the way I live the story,” she said. “What fascinates me is a case …

England fans risk World Cup ban if they break flag ban or Starmer rule | UK | News

England fans “risk getting thrown out” of World Cup stadiums if they break FIFA‘s “political” flag rules. Under guidelines set by football’s global governing body, flags “of a political, offensive and/or discriminatory nature” are prohibited. Fans who want to take a flag larger than two by 1.5 metres in size require written permission before getting to the stadium. Pictures of their flag also have to be submitted as part of an application process. One media report suggests some supporters were told a flag bearing the silhouette of a soldier holding a rifle would not be allowed. GB News reports that the Football Association is aware of one England flags stating, “Keir Starmer is a n**ce”. Such a flag would also not be permitted inside stadiums, according to The People’s Channel, which reports that fans who fall foul of the rules risk being thrown out of grounds. Negative chanting about the Prime Minister also reportedly risks fans being ejected from stadiums. Ahead of tonight’s match in Dallas, an FA spokesman said the association has advised our …

Andrew’s 4-word ‘rule’ for Beatrice and Eugenie on how to behave | Royal | News

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie’s appearance at Peter Phillips’ wedding last weekend has sparked discussion after reports claimed Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor told his daughters to attend the family occasion with a simple four-word message. The York sisters joined members of the Royal Family at the Gloucestershire wedding alongside their husbands, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi and Jack Brooksbank, following months of intense scrutiny surrounding both their parents and their own positions within the monarchy. Beatrice and Eugenie were photographed walking to the venue, drawing significant attention. According to the Daily Mail, the sisters had reportedly been uncertain about whether to attend the wedding at all before receiving encouragement from their father, who is now living on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. A source told the Mail: “For while Beatrice and Eugenie are said to have been in two minds about whether or not even to attend their cousin’s nuptials, I can reveal that Andrew – still nursing an ego as bruised as his recently-photographed face – emailed his daughters from exile in rural Norfolk, urging them not merely …

Grand Traverse tribe challenges gaming rule threatening Michigan Crystal Shores Casino operations

Grand Traverse tribe challenges gaming rule threatening Michigan Crystal Shores Casino operations

The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians has taken its fight with federal gaming regulators to court, filing a lawsuit that could determine the future of its Crystal Shores Casino in Benzie County, Michigan. Filed June 9 in federal court in Washington, the case challenges a regulatory policy known as the “one-bite rule.” Tribal leaders argue the policy improperly blocks gaming on land that otherwise qualifies under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act’s restored lands exception. The tribe argues that the Benzie Parcel site, where Crystal Shores Casino opened in January 2025, satisfies federal requirements because it was placed into trust after federal recognition was restored and holds longstanding historical and cultural importance to the Band. Federal regulators reached a different conclusion. According to the complaint, officials determined that the tribe’s “existing gaming facilities precludes a finding” that the Benzie Parcel qualifies under the restored lands exception. Regulators later rejected an amendment to the tribe’s gaming ordinance and issued a Notice of Violation directing the casino to stop operations. The tribe alleges the requirement …

Judge to Rule Thursday in Misdemeanor Arrest of Congressional Candidate Brad Lander

NEW YORK (AP) — Congressional candidate Brad Lander on Wednesday got the day in court that he demanded after a misdemeanor charge was lodged against him last summer after he was arrested while protesting with other elected officials outside an immigration holding facility in New York City. The Democrat testified in Manhattan federal court in his own defense that he did not try to block an elevator by sitting near it during the protest on the 10th floor of a federal building in lower Manhattan that houses 40 federal agencies, including the FBI. A magistrate judge who heard the one-day trial without a jury said he’ll rule Thursday morning. A prosecutor said Lander was guilty of the charge because he was in front of an elevator whose doors never opened during the 20 to 25 minutes he was seated on the floor in a circle with the other politicians. Prosecutors have said they will not seek jail time if Lander is convicted. Lander, formerly the city’s comptroller and an ally of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, testified …

From VAR changes to covering mouths: Every new rule at World Cup 2026

This summer’s World Cup will have a very different feel. Not just because it has expanded to 48 teams, but also because there are a number of rule changes coming into force at the tournament. Those regulations have been confirmed by FIFA, and many of them concern the way that Video Assistant Referees (VAR) will be used in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The tournament is set to get underway this week, with the first game kicking off on Thursday when Mexico take on South Africa at the Estadio Banorte. Here, Standard Sport outlines all the new rules that will be on show at the tournament. There are three key decisions that VAR currently preside over: goals, penalties and straight red cards. Now, there will be new scenarios that video assistants can review. The first is an incorrectly awarded corner, and a check will be made but only if it doesn’t slow down the game’s restart. An example would be if a corner is awarded but replays indicate that the final touch came off …

New DVSA driving rule change coming Tuesday for first time in UK | UK | News

DVSA rule change for learner drivers coming June 9 (Image: Getty) Learner drivers across the UK are being urged to exercise caution as the final stage of the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) booking rule changes comes into force on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. This latest update restricts where candidates can relocate their practical driving tests. These changes are part of a broader, phased strategy introduced by the DVSA to curb misuse of the booking system. For years, the system has been plagued by unofficial third-party booking services and “placeholder” bookings—where slots are secured early and moved repeatedly—contributing to lengthy backlogs and frustrating delays for other candidates. A statement on Gov.uk reads: “From June 9, 2026, further restrictions will come into force, limiting learners to moving their test only to one of the three nearest driving test centres. This will help to deter bookings at locations where learners do not intend to take their test.” The new rules, implemented in stages, have fundamentally changed things for learners: Number of changes allowed: Since March 31, …

Doctor Explains ‘3-3-3’ Rule That Could Explain Your Sleeping Problems

Doctor Explains ‘3-3-3’ Rule That Could Explain Your Sleeping Problems

Having the occasional bad night’s sleep isn’t anything to worry about in and of itself, the NHS says. But if the issue lasts a long time or starts to affect your day-to-day life, it could be worth speaking to a doctor, as this might be down to conditions like insomnia. Still, those terms can be a little tough to navigate. How long is “a long time”? It feels like everyone complains about feeling tired – how can we tell “normal” fatigue from sleep-disorder-level exhaustion? Here, doctor and Fellow at the Royal College of Anaesthetists, Dr Sunny Nayee, shared the “3-3-3 rule” he uses to tell bad sleep from a more lasting issue. What is the “3-3-3 rule”? “If you experience disrupted sleep at least three nights a week for at least three months, medical practitioners no longer regard it as lifestyle related but in the realm of insomnia,” Dr Nayee said. He encourages those concerned to ask themselves three questions: Do you experience poor sleep for a minimum of three nights? Have you experienced poor …

7-7-7 Parenting Rule: Benefits, Challenges And Alternatives

If you’re anything like me, you’re always on the lookout for new parenting tricks and tips to help make your life calmer – and your kids happier. I recently stumbled across something called the 7-7-7 parenting rule, where parents aim to spend seven minutes in the morning, seven minutes after school or work, and seven minutes before bed connecting with their child. Over the course of the day that’s 21 minutes of undivided attention – and experts say it can work wonders for their behaviour. Dr Sasha Hall, a senior educational and child psychologist, tells HuffPost UK the idea draws on attachment theory. “When children experience regular, undivided attention, it can strengthen emotional security and support regulation,” she explains. “Over time, this can reduce behaviours linked to seeking attention, as the need for connection is being met more consistently.” The benefits of the 7-7-7 rule If you’re juggling work, household responsibilities and family life, carving out this time and embedding it into your routine can give you something concrete to aim for, rather than a …
