Exit Polls Suggest Landslide Win by South Korea’s Ruling Liberal Party in Local Elections

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Exit polls suggested that South Korea’s ruling liberal party was projected to win a landslide victory in Wednesday’s mayoral and other local elections, a result that if confirmed would give President Lee Jae Myung a firmer political mandate to advance his agenda. A victory by Lee’s Democratic Party had been widely expected because its main rival, the conservative People Power Party, remains in disarray after President Yoon Suk Yeol was removed from office and sentenced to life in prison over his martial law debacle in late 2024. The joint exit polls by South Korea’s three major TV stations — KBS, MBC and SBS — showed the Democratic Party was forecast to win at least 11 of the 16 mayoral and provincial gubernatorial posts up for grabs in Wednesday’s elections. The polls suggested the PPP had a clear lead in only one race, while the other four races were too close to call. “The conservatives’ support base has been fractured and weakened in the wake of Yoon’s impeachment, while the liberals’ …

Founders seize on Indian court ruling to revive criticism of Google’s ad business

Founders seize on Indian court ruling to revive criticism of Google’s ad business

A recent Indian court ruling against Google’s keyword advertising practices has gained fresh attention after founders said competitors have long used the system to siphon off customers and force companies to pay to protect their own brands. The ruling, delivered by the Delhi High Court on May 22 in a trademark dispute involving bathroom fittings maker Hindware, found Google liable for trademark infringement over its keyword advertising practices and awarded the company ₹3 million (around $31,600) in nominal damages. In her 163-page judgment (PDF), Justice Mini Pushkarna rejected Google’s argument that it was merely a passive intermediary in serving ads on its search platform. The judge said Google, through its AdWords platform, allowed Hindware’s rivals to use “Hindware” as a keyword to target users searching for the brand. “Google by selling the trademark of the plaintiff [Hindware] as a keyword without any authorization for commercial gains is infringing the plaintiff’s right to exclusive use of its trademark under Section 28 of the Trade Marks Act,” the judge said. The judgment drew attention on Friday after …

‘A landmark’: Brazil’s prosecutors hail court ruling to preserve Fordlandia | History News

Federal prosecutors in Brazil have celebrated a court decision mandating the preservation of Fordlandia, a 1928 city built by the United States industrialist Henry Ford in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. The court ruling was the result of decades of advocacy, as historians, activists and residents pushed for the crumbling site to be protected. Google Appeals Antitrust Ruling, Says Apple Chose Its Search Engine ‘Fair and Square’

Google today appealed a 2024 ruling that found it violated antitrust law by paying to be the default search engine on iPhones. In a filing with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, Google said the district court made an error when concluding that Google’s search success was due to anything other than competition on merit. Google suggested it surpassed competition through better innovation, more investments, and “just working harder,” which is why Apple chose Google Search as its default search option on Apple devices. Whether or not Google has monopoly power, Google did nothing that “harm[ed] the competitive process.” It did not impede its rivals’ opportunity to make—or Apple’s and Mozilla’s ability to choose—a better offer. Indeed, there is no finding—or even any evidence—that Google’s customers would have chosen a rival, even in the absence of the challenged agreements. Google just prevailed in the marketplace fair and square. The filing points out that Apple was free to distribute and promote rival search engines, with Google highlighting the alternative browser options that Apple …

Santiago/Getty Images While Republican-led Southern states race to redo their congressional maps after the U.S. Supreme Court weakened the Voting Rights Act’s protections against racial discrimination, the decision’s effects may be felt most notably on the local level. There are active legal fights over at least 17 voting maps or election systems for state and local governments that are now reckoning with the court’s ruling, an NPR analysis of federal court records has found. In the weeks since the high court released its landmark decision in Louisiana v. Callais, many lawyers in these lawsuits have been working on briefs about how they think the ruling’s reinterpretation of the Voting Rights Act’s Section 2 provisions in redistricting should be applied. The focus of Section 2, the Supreme Court’s conservative supermajority ruled, should …

Federal funding for Trump’s ballroom in jeopardy after Senate ruling

Federal funding for Trump’s ballroom in jeopardy after Senate ruling

If Republicans do not succeed, they may be unable to include the ballroom-related funding in a US$72 billion spending package they plan to bring to a vote on the Senate floor, with passage expected on a party-line vote with Democrats opposed. The bulk of the legislation is devoted to immigration enforcement. Republicans have been invoking complex budget rules to try to secure passage without any Democratic support. Democrats have opposed funding for Trump’s signature immigration crackdown absent reforms they have sought since federal immigration agents killed US citizens in separate incidents in Minnesota in January. Republicans have said federal funding for ballroom security is needed to ensure presidential safety, citing an April incident in which an alleged gunman is accused of storming a black-tie media gala in Washington that Trump attended. The administration has said the ballroom will modernise infrastructure, bolster security and ease strain on the White House, which often relies on temporary outdoor structures to host large events. Trump has said the ballroom will be completed around September 2028, near the end of …

Black church leaders to march in Selma this weekend over Voting Rights Act ruling

(RNS) — Nearly 100 faith and voting rights leaders plan to gather in Selma and Montgomery, Alabama, on Saturday (May 16) as part of a rally in protest of the recent Supreme Court decision that hollowed out a key provision of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. The “All Roads Lead to the South” rally intends to launch a national movement to counter the ruling’s trickle-down effects on Black Americans’ political power, particularly in Southern states. Organizers expect nearly 5,000 people to attend.  The rally is in response to the April 29 court ruling, which declared Louisiana’s attempt to add a second Black-majority district on its congressional map unconstitutional — effectively gutting the landmark civil-rights era law that prohibits racial discrimination in voting. State legislatures in Tennessee and Alabama have expeditiously redrawn congressional maps in the wake of the decision. The mobilization event, organized by Black Voters Matter, the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation and the NAACP’s Legal Defense Fund, expects 75 buses of activists from Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi and other Southern states, with the …

Politics Home | Labour Ruling Body Approves Andy Burnham Standing For Selection In Makerfield By-Election

1 min read3 hr Andy Burnham has received approval from Labour’s ruling body to run for selection in the Makerfield parliamentary by-election, bringing the Greater Manchester mayor one step closer to being able to run in a leadership contest to replace Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The National Executive Committee (NEC) has announced it is allowing Burnham to run for selection in the Makerfield by-election, potentially giving him a route back to Parliament. The by-election will reportedly take place on 18 June. If he wins the by-election and returns as an MP, this would make him eligible to launch a leadership challenge against Starmer. The current Labour MP for Makerfield, Josh Simons, announced on Thursday that he was stepping down to make way for Burnham. However, the Manchester mayor will still have to win the selection to stand in the seat, and then win the by-election itself in an area where Reform UK has been polling strongly and performed well in last week’s local elections. The NEC had previously blocked Burnham from standing in the Gorton & Denton by-election earlier …

Andy Burnham’s backers press Labour’s ruling body for long leadership election timetable – POLITICO

In last year’s race for deputy Labour leader the first round of nominations closed just six days after the incumbent, Angela Rayner, resigned. Yet it would take Burnham until June at the very earliest to clear all the necessary hurdles to become an MP. Burnham supporters are asking NEC members to agree an election timetable with a nomination window long enough to include a full by-election campaign, said the three people cited above, all granted anonymity to speak frankly. This would make the timetable more akin to Labour’s three-and-a-half month leadership election in 2020. One of the three people, a Burnham supporter, said: “If there is a contest the NEC will have to set a process that allows that to happen. It would be absurd not to let Andy stand.” British Health Secretary and potential leadership contender Wes Streeting walks through the House of Commons to attend the State Opening of Parliament at the Palace of Westminster in London on May 13, 2026. | Toby Melville/WPA Pool/Getty Images But a Labour official said a long …
