Civil case against Alec Baldwin, ‘Rust’ movie producers advances toward a trial

Nearly two years after actor Alec Baldwin was cleared of criminal charges in the “Rust” movie shooting death, a long simmering civil negligence case is inching toward a trial this fall. On Friday, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge denied a summary judgment motion requested by the film producers Rust Movie Productions LLC, as well as actor-producer Baldwin and his firm El Dorado Pictures to dismiss the case. During a hearing, Superior Court Judge Maurice Leiter set an Oct. 12 trial date. The negligence suit was brought more than four years ago by Serge Svetnoy, who served as the chief lighting technician on the problem-plagued western film. Svetnoy was close friends with cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and held her in his arms as she lay dying on the floor of the New Mexico movie set. Baldwin’s firearm had discharged, launching a .45 caliber bullet, which struck and killed her. The Bonanza Creek Ranch in Santa Fe, N.M. in 2021. (Jae C. Rust, dust and superyachts as America’s Cup lands in Naples

Rust, dust and superyachts as America’s Cup lands in Naples

BAGNOLI, Italy, March 21 : Rusted factory skeletons loom over a shoreline poisoned by decades of heavy industry on the western fringes of Naples, which will next year host sailing’s glamorous America’s Cup. Dredgers are deepening the seabed in readiness for the racing yachts, excavators are tearing up an old pier and crews are preparing the ground for what is meant to be a temporary harbour for the high-tech, carbon-fibre boats. The sailing extravaganza, awarded to Italy last year, has generated a broader battle over whether it will finally help clean up the Bagnoli littoral, or simply bury its toxic past. Politicians say the regatta is a desperately needed catalyst for reclaiming one of Italy’s most polluted waterfronts, which used to house a smoke-spewing steel mill, cement factory and asbestos plant.  “I see the America’s Cup as a chance to speed up the environmental cleanup that was already planned, particularly offshore, where work wasn’t supposed to start until 2031,” said Enza Amato, the centre-left head of Naples City Council. “For me, the most important thing …

I replaced my standard Linux coreutils with Rust versions and it’s surprisingly faster

I replaced my standard Linux coreutils with Rust versions and it’s surprisingly faster

The first time that familiar pause caught my attention was while I was using the sort command to run through a few hundred megabytes of log text. Until now, I had always ignored it. It comes up when I use du -sh to crawl project directories or ls -la in folders packed with build artifacts. GNU coreutils are as foundational as it gets on Linux, and they feel untouchable. But as soon as it dawned on me that reliable doesn’t always mean optimal, especially on modern hardware, I knew it was time to try something different. So, uutils, the Rust reimplementation of GNU coreutils, was my next stop. I started by swapping out one command, then another, and quite often, uutils was faster. If you spend meaningful time in the terminal, these are worth trying. The friction you stopped noticing was hiding in plain sight “Fast enough” only feels fast until you compare it If you aren’t paying attention because something feels natural, you can start assuming that its limitations are normal. This is why …

7 Best Nail Clippers for Men in 2025 Won’t Rust or Dull

7 Best Nail Clippers for Men in 2025 Won’t Rust or Dull

Do the best nail clippers for men deserve pride of place on your bathroom counter? Nah. You’re going to stash them somewhere out of sight. Because unlike, say, shaving or moisturizing, clipping your nails feels more like a chore than a rewarding act of self care. Most of us tackle the task with whatever nail clippers we grabbed in the checkout line of the drugstore. If those cheap clippers are losing their bite, then it’s time for an upgrade. Or preferably two: we strongly believe everyone should have a dedicated clipper for fingers, and a separate one for toes. (If you’re prone to all-too-common ingrown toenails, then look for toenail clippers with a straight-across blade—cutting your toenails with small, curved jaw makes it all but impossible to get the right nail shape.) We snipped our way through dozens of devices (and 10 times as many nails) to bring you our favorite clippers. Our testing revealed one undeniable fact: the best nail clippers come from Japan and Germany. Apparently just like their kitchen knives, the two …

The great programming transformation: How AI and Rust are quietly dethroning C in Linux – and Windows

The great programming transformation: How AI and Rust are quietly dethroning C in Linux – and Windows

Andriy Onufriyenko/Moment/Getty Images Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. ZDNET’s key takeaways Microsoft and Linux are adding AI and Rust to their pipelines. Microsoft is leaning much harder into AI development than Linux. Both are expanding Rust, but neither OS will be fully Rust soon. Recently, Galen Hunt, a Microsoft distinguished engineer, wrote: “My goal is to eliminate every line of C and C++ from Microsoft by 2030. Our strategy is to combine AI and algorithms to rewrite Microsoft’s largest codebases” and to “evolve and augment our infrastructure to enable translating Microsoft’s largest C and C++ systems to Rust.”  Also: Linux will be unstoppable in 2026 – but one open-source legend may not survive If that sounds to you like Microsoft is going to rewrite Windows using AI from C to Rust, you’re not alone. Hunt has since backed away from that interpretation, writing, “Windows is not being rewritten in Rust with AI.” Still, one cannot help but wonder. After all, Hunt continued, “We are building tech to make migration from language …
