Grunge legend Jennifer Finch has died days after announcing her brain cancer diagnosis. She was 59.
Finch, the longtime bassist of nineties rock band L7, died at age 59 following an aggressive brain cancer, according to a statement shared on her social media accounts Saturday.
“We are devastated to announce the death of our partner, sister, daughter, and friend Jennifer Precious Finch,” the statement said. “Jennifer’s impact on the world of music was seismic; her impact on our lives, even moreso. We appreciate everyone’s interest and concern, thank you for all the kind messages. We appreciate some space to heal privately during this difficult time.”
Word of Finch’s death came just five days after she went public with her brain cancer diagnosis and announced she would not be joining L7 on the band’s upcoming farewell tour.
“Many of you know Jennifer as a musician, artist, writer, photographer, punk historian, and a force of nature who has never been particularly interested in sitting still or going quietly,” her team said in a statement shared on her Instagram page July 13.
“Today, we have to share something none of us ever wanted to write: Jennifer is facing an aggressive form of brain cancer.”
The statement went on to share a GoFundMe page that was launched to support Finch’s “professional in-home nursing care, physical and speech therapy, medical equipment, home-care expenses, and the essential support Jennifer needs to live with as much comfort, dignity, autonomy, and quality of life as possible.
“It will also help protect and preserve the creative legacy she has spent decades building—because that work matters, and it deserves to endure,” her team said.
At the time of writing, the fundraiser has raised more than $394,000 of its $350,000 goal.
Finch was a member of L7’s lineup after the band formed in Los Angeles in 1985. She anchored the band with her blunt bass style alongside Donita Sparks, Suzi Gardner and Dee Plakas. The band broke through amid the alternative boom in the early nineties and became known for punk hits like “Fuel My Fire” and “Pretend We’re Dead.”

L7 paid tribute in a statement to Finch, saying: “With a very heavy heart we announce that our beloved bandmate, friend, and fellow troublemaker Jennifer Finch has passed away today. She had a long courageous fight with brain cancer and was loved by many wonderful friends, musical peers and fans worldwide. We love you Jennifer.”
