Susan Sarandon has alleged that she has missed out on multiple work opportunities due to her staunch support of Palestine. Over the weekend, the Oscar winner took part in a Q&A at the Venice Film Festival, where she is promoting her new movie The Echo Chamber. During the conversation, Susan – a long-time advocate for Palestine and its people amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East – suggested that there’s been something of a sea change in recent times on this issue, particularly in the United States. “I think that the narrative has completely changed in terms of historical relevance of Palestine and the ties of Zionists with America and our politics,” she claimed (as reported by The Guardian). “That has been a major revelation for people. Susan Sarandon says she’s lost out on movie roles due to her support of Palestine. At the Venice Film Festival on Sunday, Sarandon was asked if she thinks that the “mood [is] changing” in Hollywood as it pertains to the conflict in Gaza. “I think that the narrative has completely changed,” she responded, according to videos posted online. “There’s a lot of things that people are aware of now.” She continued: “In terms of the power structure, I’ve still had movies taken away recently, because there are agencies that are telling people not to hire me still. But that’s the power structure. I think within the people, certainly internationally, I feel welcome. So it depends. There’s a high level of difficulty in what Susan Sarandon pulls off with apparent ease in The Accompanist. As Sylvia, the foster parent of a young girl, she plays a character who is a little wacky and indulgent, kind and at times wise but with emotional baggage of her own. And Sarandon turns what might have been a blueprint for sentimentality and clichés into a believable, idiosyncratic, very present individual. In fact, all the performances in this feature debut from director Zach Woods, best known as an actor in comedies including the HBO series Silicon Valley, are grounded and sharp.
