As noted by Daring Fireball‘s John Gruber, developer Jeff Halter has released a new Afterglow app that allows you to run classic After Dark screen savers on modern macOS versions. “Afterglow is an emulator built specifically for running After Dark modules — the original 68k module code, not a remake or port — with no dependencies on ROMs or classic Mac OS,” said Halter, who has several fun nostalgic projects, such as After Dark space shooter Lunacy and HyperCard player Stacks. Savers issued an urgent recall for two perfumes part of the collection of an A-lister. The budget retailer has pulled two of Rihanna’s signature fragrances over fears they contain toxic chemicals which can affect women’s fertility. Savers says certain batches of Kiss and Riri by Rihanna were found to contain chemicals banned for cosmetic use in the UK and EU. Hydroxyisohexyl 3-cyclohexene carboxaldehyde (Lyral) and butylphenyl methylpropional (Lilial) are both prohibited from sale in the UK. It has been illegal to sell products containing Lilial in Great Britain since December 15, 2022. Savers are being urged to shop around and move fast if they want to get hold of one of the competitive deals still available. These include one-year fixed-rate savings bonds paying up to 4.35% and an easy-access account with a rate of 4.5%. The impact of the Bank of England’s pre-Christmas interest rate cut – the sixth reduction since August 2024 – has been making itself felt, with reductions to rates on many savings accounts. But some best-buy savings rates have arguably held up better than one might have expected. “January is the ideal time for savers to set new financial goals and check if their savings are working as hard as they can,” says Caitlyn Eastell at the financial data provider Moneyfacts.
