I’ve been reading on a Kindle app for years. I have this strange quirk of experimenting with Kindle settings to make the reading experience better, or at least different. My Paperwhite is old (6th Gen), so I do most of my reading in the Kindle app for iOS and iPadOS. One of my favorite settings on the apps is Page Turn Animation. Turning it on makes reading feel closer to an actual book. It’s a small tweak, but perhaps that’s what our brain likes. Here’s what I changed, why it works, and a few other settings worth pairing with it. When you face performance issues on your Windows PC, one of the first pieces of advice you’re likely to hear is to look into startup apps. People who give that advice aren’t absolutely wrong; I do give out the same advice myself. After all, startup apps are known to use a decent chunk of PC resources, which can result in some performance issues. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Saturday morning called steep new U.S. tariffs on a wide swath of his country’s goods “a miscalculation” after trade talks with Canada collapsed late Friday night. My garage has never had a real signal. I run a Starlink dish for internet, with a small fleet of Nest Wifi Pro points spread throughout the house to cover dead spots a single router can’t reach on its own. Every room worked fine. SINGAPORE: A retiree noticed that small cardboard houses meant for cats placed at the void deck and pavilion near his Housing Board (HDB) block in Bukit Batok drew birds. He also felt they attracted pests. When his feedback about the issue to his Member of Parliament (MP) went apparently unheeded, the elderly man set fire to the cardboard structures and left the fires unattended. Koh Teng Boo, a 68-year-old Singaporean man, was sentenced to three months’ jail on Tuesday (Aug 4). He pleaded guilty to one count of mischief by fire. The court heard that Koh lived at a block in Bukit Batok East Avenue 4. In September 2025, he noticed that cardboard structures meant to house cats had been put up around the pavilion beside Block 261, Bukit Batok East Avenue 4, and the void deck of Block 263, Bukit Batok East Avenue 4. Because I watch a lot of TV at night once everyone else has gone to bed, cranking up the volume isn’t an option. But sometimes, even if I watch in the evening, I have to turn up the volume to hear softer dialogue, then turn it back down when there’s loud background music or booms and bangs in an action show. This frustrating is something most people have encountered at one point or another. My solution for this is to usually keep the TV lower than I’d like, especially late at night, and turn on the captions. In fact, I have become so accustomed to captions that I feel weird watching shows without them! But they get in the way of the scene. Some network channels even annoyingly position them over a character’s face, with no option to relocate the text. So, it’s not an ideal solution. But your TV may have a setting that can help that you aren’t even using. And it isn’t just TVs that have a dialogue clarity feature. You can …
