Amid reports that Paramount is in “advanced talks” to settle the antitrust lawsuit filed by 12 state attorneys general led by California against the company’s takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery, Mark Ruffalo is urging Rob Bonta to “not cave.” “Don’t you dare @AGRobBonta, do not cave. 5,670 film makers put their necks on the line for you to fight this merger. Grindr has agreed to pay £26 million to settle a lawsuit alleging that the gay hookup app shared users’ personal information, including HIV status, with third parties, the BBC reports. Mashable first reported that Grindr did this in 2018, based on an initial investigation from BuzzFeed News. In April 2024, UK law firm Austen Hays sued Grindr on behalf of thousands of UK users, claiming that the app breached the country’s privacy laws by sharing sensitive information with third-party vendors prior to 2020. New Jersey is taking its fight with Kalshi to the US Supreme Court, asking the justices to decide whether federally regulated prediction markets must also follow state sports betting rules. The state has petitioned for review after a divided Third Circuit prevented New Jersey from enforcing its wagering laws against KalshiEX LLC. At issue is whether Dodd-Frank blocks states from regulating sports contracts offered through Commodity Futures Trading Commission-regulated markets. “For more than a century, the States have been the primary regulators of gambling in this country,” New Jersey said in its petition. It also cited the Supreme Court’s 2018 Murphy v. NCAA ruling, where the justices said “each State is free to act on its own” when regulating sports betting. Here we go. Well, that was quick. Not even a quarter of the way into an expected 19-day federal trial over Meta’s alleged failure to protect young users, the social media giant agreed to settle the case. The company has agreed to pay up to $16.7 billion to 51 US states and territories, and make substantive product changes for how teens engage with its platforms. Attorneys general representing some of the 29 US states that had taken Meta to trial announced the deal on Wednesday, shortly before Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri was set to return to the witness stand. In a separate announcement detailing the settlement, Meta urged YouTube and TikTok to adopt similar changes to their platforms. The settlement is a stunning development; while other social media services including YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok resolved similar lawsuits out of court, Meta has repeatedly chosen to go to trial. Instagram and Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has struck a deal with the US states currently suing the tech giant for intentionally designing its social media platforms to be addictive and harmful to children and teens. If approved by the court, CEO Mark Zuckerberg and the company will avoid a high-stakes trial, whose consequences could have significantly affected how the tech industry operates. Meta says it will pay approximately $18 billion. Reuters first reported the settlement on Wednesday. According to court filings, Meta could pay up to $16.68 billion to states and territories in the agreement. In a blog post, Meta said it will initially pay over $12 billion to participating states, in annual payments over a 10-year period, to fund child safety initiatives. If Snap, TikTok and YouTube join the agreement, Meta will pay an additional $5.3 billion, bringing the company’s total up to $18 billion. Zillow and Redfin have reached a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and five states, ending a legal fight over a 2025 partnership that the FTC claimed hurt competition in the rental-listing market. The settlement was announced on Monday, just as the case was scheduled to head toward trial this morning.  The case stems from a deal announced last year in which Redfin agreed to display Zillow’s rental listings on its websites rather than compete directly with Zillow for rental advertisers. The arrangement could have kept Redfin out of the rental advertising business for as long as nine years. Redfin owns Rent.com and ApartmentGuide.com, two major rental-listing platforms.  According to the FTC and attorneys general from Arizona, Connecticut, New York, Virginia, and Washington, Zillow agreed to pay Redfin $100 million to keep Redfin from competing with Zillow. The companies defended the partnership as a way to give renters access to a larger pool of listings. I’m sure that parents with toddlers have, in the last week, run the Roxy Square scenario in their head (even if only to the extent of what can be seen on the CCTV footage). How would we have reacted?  In the heat of the moment, would we really be as rational then as we think about it now? And if our children had watched us respond with violence, what would that have taught them? What I do know is this: I want my children to know that it’s okay to feel uncomfortable with an interaction. I want them to be able to say so, move away, seek help and to know it is not disrespectful or impolite to do so. I want to model the behaviour I expect of others. Showing affection doesn’t require unsolicited touching nor does respecting boundaries require a signed consent form.  Say hello, smile and wave.
