Can Apple and Google stop children from sharing explicit images?

Children can already be prevented from sharing some explicit images, but the UK wants tech firms to go further martin-dm/Getty Images Tech firms have three months to put in place measures that stop children in the UK from being able to create and share explicit images of themselves on devices – or face regulation to enforce this. “I am calling on tech companies operating in this country to introduce vice controls that prevent children from sending and receiving sexually explicit images,”  said UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in a speech on 8 June. “This is not an impossible challenge. If they choose not, then we will act, and we will change the law.” Apple and Google, creators of the world’s leading smartphone operating systems, have already partially implemented such controls. Apple’s iOS has a feature called Sensitive Content Warning, which detects when a device sends or receives an image or a video that contains nudity through its first-party Messaging or AirDrop systems, and then blurs it.  The system is turned on by default for child …

How sharing a psychedelic experience changes romantic relationships

How sharing a psychedelic experience changes romantic relationships

Taking a traditional psychedelic substance together with a romantic partner is associated with a deeper sense of mutual understanding and enhanced relationship quality. In contrast, using these substances alone might leave partners out of sync, potentially contributing to relationship dissolution down the line. The new research highlighting these relational dynamics was recently published in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs. In psychology, people are believed to make sense of themselves and the broader world through their relationships with others. Romantic partners are particularly motivated to develop a joint perspective on life, actively aligning their views to create a stable social environment. Researchers refer to this psychological phenomenon as shared reality. When a couple possesses a high degree of this mutual perspective, they understand external events in a very similar way. This mutual understanding builds trust and reinforces the underlying bond between the two individuals. A strong shared reality often develops simply by experiencing mundane life events together over a long period of time, such as eating meals, dealing with hardships, or taking a walk. A psychedelic …

The Download: deepfake porn’s stolen bodies and AI sharing private numbers

This is today’s edition of The Download, our weekday newsletter that provides a daily dose of what’s going on in the world of technology. The shock of seeing your body used in deepfake porn When Jennifer got a research job in 2023, she ran her new professional headshot through a facial recognition program. She wanted to see whether it would pull up the porn videos she’d made more than a decade earlier. It did, but it also surfaced something she’d never seen before: one of her old videos, now featuring someone else’s face on her body. Conversations about sexualized deepfakes usually focus on the people whose faces are inserted into explicit content without consent. But another group often gets ignored: the people whose bodies those faces are attached to. Adult content creators say AI systems are training on their work, cloning their likenesses, and generating explicit content they never agreed to make, all with little legal protection or control.  Read the full story on the threat to their rights, livelihoods, and ownership of their own …

Instagram Introduces Instants, Meta’s New Private Photo Sharing App

Instagram Introduces Instants, Meta’s New Private Photo Sharing App

Instagram has a new app called Instants that lets you share unedited photos with your closest friends that’ll disappear once viewed. Sound familiar? Meta announced Instants on Wednesday, an Instagram-integrated tool that lets you photo dump to your mutual followers and friends. Instants won’t let you edit the photos you send, but you can add captions if you’d like.  If this feature sounds familiar, it’s because you can already send private disappearing photos through apps like Snapchat and BeReal. Similar to those apps, photos sent through Instants will vanish after 24 hours. The app also has an undo button in case you second-guess sharing a pic. The Instant app lets you share unedited photos with your closest friends. Jeffrey Hazelwood/ CNET To use Instants, all you need to do is open your Instagram inbox. You’ll see what appears to be a stack of photos in the bottom-right corner of your screen. From there, choose who you want to send images to — close friends or followers you follow back — and tap the white button below …

Meta Launches ‘Instants’ App for Sharing Disappearing Photos on Instagram

Meta Launches ‘Instants’ App for Sharing Disappearing Photos on Instagram

Meta today announced the launch of Instants, a new image sharing option on the Instagram social network. Instants are ephemeral photos that disappear from Instagram after they’re viewed by a user’s friends or after a 24-hour period. Reactions and replies to Instants images show up in DMs instead of on the post. Instants photos are only displayed for a short period, but they are saved to a user’s archive for a year and can be reshared to Stories. Instants cannot be edited, with no option for filters, stickers, or modifications beyond captions. That sets them apart from Stories, which is already an Instagram feature. Instants is an Instagram feature, but Meta has also developed a standalone Instants companion app “for quicker camera access.” The standalone app is a direct competitor to Snapchat, the original ephemeral image social network. The new app can be used for sharing Instants, but on Instagram, users can also share Instants from a new camera option in the Direct Messages section of the app. Instants can be viewed on Instagram by …

Mom Defends Teaching Kids They Don’t Have To Share

Mom Defends Teaching Kids They Don’t Have To Share

Every parent has different ways of teaching their kids important life lessons and skills. Despite that, there are some fundamental rules that all children must learn, including respect and, of course, sharing. Right? Mom Lottie Weaver takes a different approach. In fact, she actually encourages her kids not to share if they don’t want to. She has no problem with them being stingy with their stuff when around other kids, which elicited a whole lot of backlash from other parents and even a few public school teachers. A mom said she teaches her kids that they don’t have to share if they don’t feel like it. “My kids don’t have to share their toys or their snacks or literally any of their things with your kids. If we are out and about at the park, [or] I don’t know, some communal play place, if my kids have a scooter toy, something [with] bubbles, they’re not sharing with your kids,” Weaver declared in a TikTok video. She explained that she’s teaching her kids not to share …
