Deep-ocean cameras capture first-ever images of live Goblin shark

Goblin sharks have spent years in public imagination as something half-seen, half-legendary, a pale, long-snouted predator usually known from carcasses, fishing lines, and brief encounters near death. Now they have finally been seen alive where they actually live, deep in the ocean. As a result, that changes more than a shark checklist. A University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa-led team has reported the first published live observations of goblin sharks, Mitsukurina owstoni, in their natural deep-sea habitat. The paper, published in the Journal of Fish Biology, describes two separate sightings. One was near Jarvis Island in 2019, and another was on the slope of the Tonga Trench in 2024. For a species often called a “living fossil,” the footage fills in a major blank. Goblin sharks are the only living members of their family, a shark lineage dating back nearly 125 million years. Lead author Aaron Judah, a doctoral candidate in the Deep-Sea Fish Ecology Lab and the Deep-Sea Animal Research Center in the Department of Oceanography at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, said the …

Swimmer critical after shark attack at popular beach | World | News

The victim, believed to be in her 30s, sustained serious injuries to her arm and leg, according to police. She is in a critical condition. A witness told Australian news outlet news.com.au that a lifeguard on a surfboard raced to assist the woman after screams were heard. “I saw the shark’s fins,” the witness said. “A swimmer was doing laps not far from shore. The lifeguard made an X symbol with his arms and the shark alarm sounded.” The witness also reported seeing “a lot of blood” in the water, adding that the swimmer appeared to have sustained a bite to the torso. New South Wales police stated that the woman was pulled from the water by members of the public, who began administering first aid before emergency services arrived on the scene. Officers then provided further first aid before the woman was airlifted to hospital by helicopter. Nearby beaches, including Coogee, Clovelly and Bronte, have since been closed to the public. Just months prior, a 12-year-old boy was attacked by a shark in Sydney. …

Jason Derulo faces criticism over ‘cruel’ underground shark tank in his California mansion

Last month, the “Watcha Say” singer, 36, showed his shark and stingray tank to YouTuber N3on on a recorded tour of his $15 million Tarzana, California home. In the video, he revealed that he lets his son name the animals. The circular tank is positioned underground as the living room’s centerpiece and covered by glass, allowing people to walk above it and see the animals swimming below. The video drew criticism from an animal welfare organization, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, after it circulated online. “Normalising the ownership of sharks in a domestic tank sends a damaging message to audiences around the world,” said IFAW’s Christian …

With its distinctive, hornlike snout and protrudable jaws, the pink-skinned living fossil is the only surviving representative of a family lineage that dates back nearly 125 million years.  The goblin shark was first identified in 1898, but sightings remain few and far between. The fish typically remain at a depth of around 3,000 feet, and any encounters with humans have been the result of accidental fishing line snags. The 13-foot-long predators also die quickly after reaching the surface. However, marine biologists at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa recently captured videos revealing not one, but two goblin sharks swimming in their native habitats. …

Shark kills diver off Western Australia

SYDNEY: A shark killed a diver off the coast of Western Australia on Saturday (Jun 6), police said, the country’s fourth fatal shark attack this year. The man in his 30s was attacked by a 4.5m shark off Michaelmas Island, southeast of Perth, ambulance services and the Western Australian government said. The attack was reported around 11.25am local time, they added. Police said the man was spearfishing when he was attacked by the deadly fish and was taken back to shore where paramedics attempted to treat him. “Sadly, he was unable to be revived,” they said. The state’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development urged people to take “additional caution” in the area and to stay abreast of shark sightings in the area. The attack comes just two weeks after a man was killed by a shark in northern Queensland state. And the killing is the second this year in Western Australia – last month a man died after being attacked by a great white off Rottnest Island near the city of Perth. Australian …

For years I have struggled with allergies, whether that be hay fever or dust, there’s always something making me feel a little bit off. I would wake up in the mornings thinking I had a cold, it’s so bad. I knew I had to change something up a little bit as it was becoming pretty unbearable. My flat is quite large and is all wooden floors, which is a total dust trap. So I realised recently that the time had come to get a new vacuum cleaner. The one that I had was old, didn’t really suck things up properly and would …

‘KPop Shark Heroes’ Brings ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ to Shark Week

Discovery Channel is getting in on the KPop Demon Hunters craze in a very unique way —  a new Shark Week special starring two of the film’s actors. The special, KPop Shark Heroes, is set to premiere during this year’s Shark Week, scheduled for late July, and is hoping to change minds after recent shark attacks off the Korean peninsula.   While the actual demon hunting gang of K-pop idols are not involved, the special finds host Ken Jeong, who plays Bobby in the animated feature, “determined to reshape the perception of sharks across East Asia and around the globe,” according to a press release. Rei Ami, the singing voice of Zoe in the Oscar-winning film, joins Jeong, as the “Golden” singer is apparently a longtime lover or sharks. In the special, Jeong makes it it his mission to launch a public awareness campaign that “educates, empowers and shifts the narrative” around sharks through the “power of K-pop.” It’s unclear exactly how K-pop plays into the show, but it’s safe to say they’ll be no …
