Researchers found that healthy middle-aged adults with higher genetic risk for Alzheimer’s disease experienced more frequent brief awakenings during sleep, even though they had no diagnosed cognitive problems. The findings point toward sleep microstructure, including tiny arousals that people usually do not remember, as a possible early indicator of vulnerability years before Alzheimer’s symptoms become obvious. The research also highlights the locus coeruleus, a tiny brainstem region involved in sleep, arousal and attention, as a possible connection between disrupted sleep and the earliest biological processes associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Sleep may carry early clues about Alzheimer’s disease long before memory problems appear. New research from the University of Liège suggests that frequent tiny awakenings during the night may relate to higher genetic risk of the disease in middle-aged adults. The study analyzed sleep patterns in more than 500 healthy people. Most were young adults ages 18 to 31, while others were ages 50 to 69. MeerKAT radio observations produced the first direct detection of the neutral-hydrogen intensity autopower spectrum at redshifts of about 0.32 and 0.44 without relying on an overlapping optical galaxy survey. The researchers extracted the extremely faint 21-centimetre hydrogen signal from about 96 hours of 2018 observations despite contamination from bright foreground radio emission, weak radio-frequency interference and instrumental effects. The result shows that hydrogen intensity mapping can begin functioning as a standalone cosmological tool for tracing gas, galaxies and the underlying matter distribution across enormous volumes of the Universe. A whisper of hydrogen that traveled across the Universe for billions of years has been pulled directly from radio observations, giving astronomers a new way to map the cosmic structures that surround galaxies. Using South Africa’s MeerKAT telescope, astronomers detected the collective radio glow of neutral hydrogen at two periods in cosmic history. Meta announced Tuesday the release of Muse, a personal AI agent that people can message to automate digital tasks in a secure cloud environment, all while relying on security and privacy that the company says is “built into it” from the start. Meta says Muse is rolling out today for iOS and Android users in a dedicated Muse app, as well as the website Muse.ai. The company also says users can directly message Muse in WhatsApp to interact with the agent. Meta says users of its AI glasses will soon be able to interact with its Muse agent as well. Meta says people can try out Muse for free, but users who want to automate lots of digital tasks will need one of the company’s AI subscription plans. Muse is Meta’s latest attempt to compete with viral AI agents such as OpenClaw and Instinct, which users can message with to automate digital tasks. One of the most enduring principles in the entire Universe is the cosmological principle: an outgrowth of the Copernican revolution. Copernicus, nearly 500 years ago now, hypothesized that the Earth occupied no special place in the Universe when he put forth the heliocentric picture, instead recognizing that Earth might be just an ordinary planet like all the others: revolving around the Sun. We’ve since expanded our view of the Universe substantially, and with it, our view of the cosmological principle. In every way fathomable, there’s nothing special or preferred about our location in space and time — in there here and now — relative to the vast, expanding Universe that we ourselves are a part of. But any number of possible signals, coming from the Universe itself, could call that very principle into question. I run a Starlink dish for internet, with a small fleet of Nest Wifi Pro points spread throughout the house to cover dead spots a single router can’t reach on its own. Every room worked fine. The garage, maybe 40 feet from the nearest point with a couple of exterior walls in the way, never did.
