Right away, attorneys general in the affected states filed their lawsuit late Wednesday in a federal district court in Illinois asking for the temporary restraining order. And the next day, a federal judge blocked the Trump administration’s action with a temporary restraining order released late Thursday. In an opinion accompanying the order, U.S. District Judge Manish S. Shah wrote that even though the stated reason for the cancellations was that the grants did not align …

Apple Check Signed by Steve Jobs Sells for 4,800× Its Original Value

RR Auction has announced that an Apple check signed by the company’s co-founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak fetched a whopping $2.4 million at auction this week. The check was for $500, meaning that it sold for 4,800× its original value. According to RR Auction, the $500 check was issued to printed circuit board designer Howard Cantin, shortly after Jobs and Wozniak opened Apple’s first bank account. Cantin was responsible for translating Wozniak’s Apple-1 schematic into a manufacturable printed circuit board, leading to Apple’s first commercial product. Dated March 16, 1976, the Wells Fargo check is marked “No. 1.” It was issued a few weeks before Apple Computer was officially founded on April 1, 1976. “This is the most important financial document in Apple history,” said Bobby Livingston, executive vice president at RR Auction. “It captures Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak’s first true business transaction, and the final result shows that collectors recognized its significance above any other Apple material ever brought to market.” Popular Stories Apple Unveils First New Products of 2026 Apple today …

Donald Trump’s Board of Peace signed at Davos – key points I took away from my visit to the ski resort

Donald Trump’s Board of Peace signed at Davos – key points I took away from my visit to the ski resort

Donald Trump’s newly launched “Board of Peace” presents itself as a bold attempt to break with what its founders describe as decades of failed international diplomacy. Its charter opens with a declaration that few would openly dispute: “Durable peace requires pragmatic judgment, common-sense solutions, and the courage to depart from approaches and institutions that have too often failed.” It is true that the world urgently needs to overcome decades of inertia to reform its international organisations. It is true that new institutions are needed to solve global problems rather than merely managing never-ending crises. This is perhaps why Donald Trump decided to hold the signing ceremony for his new board on the margins of the World Economic Forum in Davos. Here, more than any other place, is where results-oriented global business leaders supposedly gather. At the signing of the charter, a jubilant Trump was among 20 heads of state and prime ministers (of the 60 who had been invited). The “most prestigious board ever formed” so far includes the presidents of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and …

Another US state just signed a harsh new law requiring licenses, insurance for e-bikes

Another US state just signed a harsh new law requiring licenses, insurance for e-bikes

New Jersey has just taken one of the most aggressive – and controversial – steps yet in regulating electric bikes, and it’s a move that’s already drawing sharp criticism from cycling advocates. Gov. Phil Murphy signed a new e-bike law this week that effectively lumps everything with a motor and two wheels into a single category, scrapping the widely accepted three-class system for regulating street-legal electric bicycles. That means pedal-assist e-bikes, throttle bikes, and high-powered e-moto-style machines are now treated the same under state law. New Jersey has been pursuing stricter e-bike laws for several years, and it now appears to have finally succeeded. A one-year countdown has now begun until the law takes effect, where e-bike owners in New Jersey will need to register their bikes, carry insurance, and hold a driver’s license. Riders 14 and under are banned from using motorized bicycles and scooters altogether, while adults with a standard driver’s license won’t need an additional endorsement. Violators face a $50 fine. Those 15 to 17 years of age without a driver’s license …

Divorced artist loses fight to keep £1.5m north London home she claimed her ex-husband signed over in WhatsApp message

But for the trustees, barrister Steven Fennel argued that the messages had not been signed and so were not legally binding and if found to be so, “the result will be that a WhatsApp message in and of itself, without a ‘signature’ in the text, will in all cases count as signed for the purposes of all statutory requirements for signature. EU-Mercosur deal set to be signed, with or without France’s support

EU-Mercosur deal set to be signed, with or without France’s support

The agriculture ministers of the European Union, in Brussels, on January 7, 2026. NICOLAS TUCAT/AFP If all goes according to plan, Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, should fly to Paraguay to sign, on Monday, January 12, the trade agreement between the European Union and four Mercosur countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay). Even France, which fought hard against the free trade agreement, does not see anything that could derail the process. On Friday, the member states are expected to authorize von der Leyen to sign the deal that the Commission, which negotiates on behalf of the 27 member states in trade matters, and Mercosur reached in December 2024, after 25 years of negotiations. At the Elysée presidential palace, Emmanuel Macron had not yet decided on his position. In any case, the matter seemed already settled. Italy seemed ready to join the pro-Mercosur camp, alongside Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and the Scandinavian countries, effectively ending Paris’s last hopes of forming, together with Poland, Hungary and Austria, a blocking minority. Rome long …
