Food assistance slashed for hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees trapped in Bangladesh camps : NPR

FILE – An aerial view of a Rohingya refugee camp, home to over a million of Myanmar’s persecuted Rohingya minority, covers the land in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, Nov. 25, 2025. Mahmud Hossain Opu/AP hide caption toggle caption Mahmud Hossain Opu/AP SYDNEY — Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees struggling to survive in Bangladesh’s overcrowded camps will see their food assistance slashed starting on Wednesday, raising alarm throughout the increasingly desperate community. Currently, the 1.2 million Rohingya trapped in the squalid camps receive $12 a month per person, an amount the persecuted minority from Myanmar has long warned is barely sustainable. Most of the Rohingya in the camps fled brutal attacks by Myanmar’s military in 2017 and they are legally barred from working in Bangladesh, leaving them largely reliant upon humanitarian aid to survive. Under the United Nations’ World Food Program’s new tiered system, the amount each person receives will vary based on the severity of their family’s needs, with around 17% of the population getting as little as $7 per month. A third of the …

Royal Native Oyster Stores: Michelin restaurant’s hygiene rating slashed after ‘foul’ discovery

They included flies, a bucket of “foul-smelling” fish, and risks of contamination. The Royal Native Oyster Stores, operated by the Whitstable Oyster Company in Whitstable, has for years been a member of the prestigious guide and is credited with playing a key role in the town’s revival. However, the seafront establishment has now plummeted from a five-star food hygiene score to just two following a recent visit by Canterbury City Council (CCC). An environmental health inspector from the council downgraded the popular eatery after highlighting several critical problems within its kitchen. The council inspector visited the restaurant in September, writing in their report that they found “a foul-smelling bucket containing discarded portions of fish”. open image in gallery The bucket of discarded …

Lectric eBikes just slashed prices on America’s most popular rides

Lectric eBikes just slashed prices on America’s most popular rides

Lectric doesn’t really do old-school sales. At least not the kind most of us think of when we hear the word. Sure, North America’s largest electric bike retailer, Lectric eBikes, has tons of great deals all year round. But the seasonal sales are often value bundles where the prices remain the same, but you get a ton of great accessories thrown in. Now for a limited time though, Lectric has launched an honest-to-goodness, save-you-some-real-money sale on America’s most popular electric bikes. For years, the company has leaned heavily on those value-packed bundles instead of straight-up price cuts. You’d pay the same sticker price, but get racks, fenders, upgraded lights, locks, or other useful accessories thrown in. It’s been a smart strategy, and one that helped cement Lectric’s reputation as the king of affordable, no-nonsense e-bikes. It also helped get many new riders a ton of great gear they might not have originally included with their bikes. But this week, something genuinely different is happening. Lectric is running what may be its first real, honest-to-goodness sale …

Police forces to be slashed in sweeping reforms | UK News

Police forces to be slashed in sweeping reforms | UK News

The number of police constabularies in England and Wales is set to be slashed in what is understood to be the largest overhaul of policing in decades. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will reveal plans next week to significantly cut the number of forces from 43. Critics have argued the current model is bureaucratic and wastes too much money – and some inside government believe smaller forces are not equipped to deal with serious crimes. It is understood the reforms would involve merging back-office functions to free up resources to be invested in more police officers. Ministers will also reveal plans for Local Policing Areas – which allow officers to focus on neighbourhood policing, targeting lower level “local crime” such as shoplifting and anti-social behaviour. The plans – which the Conservatives have said risk “undermining efforts to fight crime” – will not come into place until around 2034, insiders have warned. The shift in strategy marks the latest development in tensions between the police and home secretary, who last week welcomed plans to allow her to …

Mental health grants slashed then restored sparks chaos : NPR

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services building is seen on March 27, 2025 in Washington, DC. Officials at the Department of Health and Human Services offered no explanation of its decision to terminate and later restore grant money for mental health and addiction programs. Kayla Bartkowski/Getty Images hide caption toggle caption Kayla Bartkowski/Getty Images After a tense day of confusion and backroom negotiations, the Trump administration moved Wednesday night to restore roughly $2 billion in federal grant money for mental health and addiction programs nationwide. The money had been cut off late Tuesday without warning, sending shockwaves through a segment of the country’s patchwork system of public health that relies on grant funding. “After a day of panic across the country, non-profits and people with mental health conditions are deeply alarmed, but also hopeful that this money is being restored,” said Hannah Wesolowski with the National Alliance on Mental Illness. An administration official confirmed to NPR that the cuts, first announced by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), were being …

Egypt slashed child deaths. Now an exodus of doctors threatens progress

Egypt slashed child deaths. Now an exodus of doctors threatens progress

An exodus of doctors from Egypt threatens to unravel decades of progress in slashing child mortality in the country, doctors and medical workers say. In 1988, Egypt’s child mortality rate stood at 108 deaths per 1,000 children under five, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund. Government health insurance covered only public employees and factory workers but not their children. Poor and middle-class families were left to fend for themselves. But a series of policy reforms transformed this picture. By 2024, Egypt had reduced that mortality rate to just 26 per 1,000 children – a 76 per cent decrease – through vaccination programmes, disease eradication campaigns and expanded insurance coverage, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS). The creation of school-based health insurance in 1992 marked the beginning of what would become one of the Middle East’s most significant public health achievements, in the country with the region’s largest children population. Dr Mohamed Hassan Khalil, a retired cardiologist and health policy advocate, recalls the strategic thinking behind the scheme. “The government …
