‘I tried so hard to ladder these’: the best black tights in the UK that don’t snag or slide down – tested | Tights and socks

Tights are a staple in most women’s wardrobes, yet they’re also one of the most frequently discarded. It’s not unusual to leave the house wearing a new pair, only to realise by lunchtime that they’re laddered and ready for the bin. The Guardian’s journalism is independent. Once damaged, it usually can’t be repaired, meaning most tights end up in landfill, where the nylon and elastane can take up to 200 years to decompose. An estimated 8bn pairs of tights are bought and discarded each year, according to the brand Swedish Stockings. To make matters worse, producing traditional nylon tights releases nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas. Investing in higher-quality, longer-lasting tights can significantly reduce waste, lower environmental impact, and make tights a more reliable, sustainable part of our wardrobes. Nowadays, many brands are using recycled nylon or creating tights designed specifically to resist ladders. To save …

Tehran and Beirut Judder From US-Israeli Attacks as Oil Soars, Shares Slide

By Parisa Hafezi and Alexander Cornwell DUBAI/TEL AVIV, March 3 (Reuters) – Explosions tore through Tehran and Beirut on Tuesday and stock markets around the world tumbled while oil prices soared at the prospect of a prolonged disruption to global energy supplies from the U.S.-Israeli air war against Iran. Iranian drones struck the U.S. embassy in Saudi Arabia after previously hitting the mission in Kuwait. Washington responded by shutting both embassies and ordering non-emergency government personnel and their families to leave countries across the Middle East. A day after President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave open-ended answers when asked how long the war would last, a source told Reuters that ‌Israel’s campaign had been planned to last two weeks and was ‌moving faster. The source, familiar with Israel’s war plan, said its aim was to overthrow Iran’s clerical rulers, and there was no firm deadline to achieve it. But the Israeli military was going through its target list faster than planned, with early success killing Iran’s leaders and taking out its defences, …

Analysis-US and Iran Slide Towards Conflict as Military Buildup Eclipses Talks

By Samia Nakhoul, Parisa Hafezi and John Irish DUBAI, Feb 20 (Reuters) – Iran and the United States are sliding rapidly towards military conflict as hopes fade for a diplomatic solution to their standoff over Tehran’s nuclear programme, officials on both sides and diplomats across the Gulf and Europe say. Iran’s Gulf neighbours and its enemy Israel now consider a conflict to be more likely than a settlement, these sources say, with Washington building up one of its biggest military deployments in the region since the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Israel’s government believes Tehran and Washington are at an impasse and is making preparations for possible joint military action with the United States, though no decision has been made yet on whether to carry ‌out such an operation, said a source familiar with the planning. It ‌would be the second time the U.S. and Israel have attacked Iran in less than a year, following U.S. and Israeli airstrikes against military and nuclear facilities last June. Regional officials say oil-producing Gulf countries are preparing for …

TOKYO: Japanese stocks swept to record peaks while bonds slid and the yen sagged to an all-time low against the Swiss franc after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi scored a landslide win in Sunday’s (Feb 8) snap election. Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party won 316 of the 465 seats in parliament’s lower house, giving her the mandate to push through her big spending plans and promised tax relief without negotiating with other parties. The so-called supermajority also allows the LDP to pass legislation without upper house approval. The Nikkei 225 share average rallied 5.7 per cent to an unprecedented 57,337.07 by 01.46am GMT (9.46am, Singapore time). Of its 225 components, 197 rose while the rest fell, underscoring the breadth of the upsurge. The broader Topix advanced 3.4 per cent to a record 3,825.67. Heavyweight chip-testing equipment maker Advantest, a supplier to Nvidia, vaulted more than 13 per cent to be the Nikkei’s top performer, leading a rally among shares linked to artificial intelligence. Netflix slightly beats revenue estimates in holiday quarter; shares slide amid bidding war for Warner Bros

LOS ANGELES, Jan 20 : Netflix squeaked past Wall Street’s revenue estimates for its holiday quarter on Tuesday, as the streaming giant remains locked in a fierce bidding war for Warner Bros Discovery, sending its shares down 4 per cent in after-hours trading. Revenue came in at $12.1 billion for October through December, modestly exceeding forecasts of $11.97 billion for the quarter, according to analysts surveyed by LSEG. The company also surpassed 325 million subscribers. Nielsen reported that Netflix’s monthly viewership rose 10 per cent in December, thanks largely to the final season of hit sci-fi series “Stranger Things,” which generated 15 billion viewing minutes. Netflix also streamed two National Football League games on Christmas Day and released a third film in the “Knives Out” murder-mystery series. Netflix crossed 300 million subscribers at the end of 2024. Investors remain focused on Netflix’s $82.7 billion pursuit of …
