UK’s £500m Sovereign AI initiative backs domestic AI innovators

UK’s £500m Sovereign AI initiative backs domestic AI innovators

The UK Government has launched an ambitious £500m initiative to strengthen its position in artificial intelligence (AI), placing homegrown startups at the centre of its AI strategy. Branded Sovereign AI, the programme is designed to fund British founders, accelerate innovation, and ensure the country retains control over technologies increasingly tied to both economic growth and national security. At its core, Sovereign AI represents a deliberate shift: rather than relying on external tech giants, the UK is seeking to cultivate its own AI ecosystem, keeping talent, intellectual property and long-term value within its borders. UK Technology Secretary Liz Kendall explained: “We believe in Britain, and we are betting on Britain. We are backing our brilliant innovators and entrepreneurs, so we seize the benefits of AI to reshape Britain for the benefit of all. “Sovereign AI is unlike anything the government has ever done before. Its unique approach will help break down the barriers that have too often held back British enterprise and innovation. This is how we ensure Britain’s economic prosperity and national security in the modern age. “My message …

Together, these efforts form the backbone of the EU’s push to strengthen its strategic autonomy and defence capabilities. Record interest signals growing momentum The 2025 EDF calls drew unprecedented interest, with 410 proposals submitted – an increase of 37% compared to the previous year. This surge highlights growing engagement across Europe’s defence and research sectors, as well as rising demand for collaborative defence projects. Of the €1.07bn total, €675m has been earmarked for 32 capability development projects, while €332m will fund 25 research initiatives. These investments reflect a …

UKFE launches £1.3bn UK Fusion Strategy as UKAEA publishes national roadmap

UKFE launches £1.3bn UK Fusion Strategy as UKAEA publishes national roadmap

The UK has significantly escalated its clean energy ambitions with a series of major announcements centred on the UK Fusion Strategy. The developments outline a coordinated national effort to commercialise fusion power and capture a leading share of a market projected to reach £12 trillion by 2100. At the heart of the plan is UK Fusion Energy Ltd (UKFE), which has published its first full delivery strategy for the STEP Fusion prototype power plant. Alongside it, the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) has released its own 2026–2030 roadmap, while also launching new industry initiatives aimed at accelerating supply chain growth and technological capability. Taken together, the announcements mark one of the most comprehensive attempts yet to bring fusion from the laboratory into commercial reality. What is fusion energy? Fusion energy works by combining light atomic nuclei, typically forms of hydrogen, under extreme heat and pressure to release energy. It is the same process that powers stars. Unlike nuclear fission, fusion does not produce long-lived radioactive waste and carries a much lower risk profile. It also …

UK gigafactory investment drives £700m push into advanced manufacturing

UK gigafactory investment drives £700m push into advanced manufacturing

The UK Government has confirmed a major expansion in advanced manufacturing, centred on a new UK gigafactory project that underpins more than £700m in combined public and private investment. The facility, being developed by Agratas in Somerset, has secured £380m in government funding and is expected to create around 4,200 jobs. It is designed to significantly increase the UK’s battery manufacturing capacity at a time when demand is rising sharply, driven largely by the transition to electric vehicles (EVs), and is positioned to become one of Europe’s largest gigafactories. Once fully operational, the facility is projected to contribute an estimated £43bn to the economy over a 25-year period. Beyond direct employment, the project is expected to generate substantial secondary economic activity. Supply chain demand is likely to support thousands of additional roles, while a dedicated training centre linked to the site aims to deliver around 300 apprenticeships focused on battery manufacturing and associated engineering disciplines. Earl Wiggins, Vice President of Manufacturing Operations, UK for Agratas believes the funding will help transform the UK’s EV battery …

Building supply chain resilience in European SMEs

Building supply chain resilience in European SMEs

Empowering traditional and tech‑savvy European SMEs to innovate together and strengthen Europe’s industrial ecosystems. In the contemporary industrial landscape, the global economy has been fundamentally reshaped by a succession of unprecedented crises, most notably the COVID-19 pandemic, the geopolitical instability resulting from the conflict in Ukraine, the rise of protectionist trade policies, and recent threats to maritime commerce in critical chokepoints such as the Strait of Hormuz. These events served as a catalyst, exposing profound fragilities within international supply chains and revealing that many Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) were significantly insufficiently prepared for such high-impact, systemic shocks. In this context of heightened volatility and continuous disruption, traditional reactive models have proven insufficient; resilience has transitioned from an operational advantage to a structural necessity for economic stability and survival. The RISE-SME project To address these vulnerabilities and foster a more sustainable, globally competitive industry, the European RISE-SME project was established in 2024 with the primary objective of developing a methodology that enables European SMEs to detect and anticipate disruptions before they manifest. This initiative recognises …

ESA funding call targets space-tech to combat European wildfires

ESA funding call targets space-tech to combat European wildfires

The European Space Agency (ESA) is seeking new technologies to detect and track fires in near real time as wildfire activity intensifies across parts of Europe. European wildfires are growing larger and more frequent, and ESA is now asking industry to help respond by building tools that rely heavily on satellite data to detect, monitor and predict fires as they unfold. A sharp rise in fire activity Wildfires across Europe are becoming more frequent and destructive, particularly in southern Mediterranean countries and parts of Central and Eastern Europe. Recent data indicate a sharp escalation: the total area burned in 2025 across EU member states was more than double the long-term average recorded between 2006 and 2024. While fire has long played a natural role in maintaining ecosystems, the current trajectory reflects a shift. Human activity, combined with environmental conditions such as prolonged drought and rising temperatures, is increasing both ignition risk and fire spread. One critical factor is the expansion of urban forest boundaries, where residential areas meet flammable vegetation, amplifying both exposure and damage. …

Inside the EU’s military innovation push

Inside the EU’s military innovation push

With €7.3bn allocated for defence research and capability development through 2027, the European Defence Fund is reshaping how Europe develops military technologies, strengthens industrial cooperation, and responds to a rapidly shifting security landscape. Europe’s defence landscape is undergoing a quiet but significant transformation. At the centre of that shift is the European Defence Fund (EDF), the European Union’s flagship programme designed to finance collaborative military research and development across the bloc. Established to strengthen Europe’s defence technological and industrial base, the EDF provides funding for multinational projects developing next-generation military capabilities. Its goal is not only technological innovation but also greater cooperation between European defence industries and armed forces. The programme runs from 2021 to 2027 with a total budget of roughly €7.3bn, making it one of the most substantial collective defence research initiatives ever launched in Europe. For decades, defence development across Europe was fragmented, with national programmes often duplicating efforts or producing systems that struggled to operate together. The EDF aims to address those inefficiencies by encouraging countries to design and build critical …
