But the most important risk factor for cancer is something else: ageing. That’s right, the factor most associated with cancer is unavoidable – and a condition that we will all experience. Why is this important? Older adults are the fastest-growing population in Canada and globally. By 2068, approximately 29 per cent of Canadians will be over age 65. With cancer being one of the most common diseases in older adults and one of the most common diseases in Canada, it means we need to think about how to provide the best cancer care for older adults. Demographic shift So, how are we doing so far? The answer is: not great. This may be surprising, but …

Chinese Companies Are Selling Vapes With Chemicals Potentially More Potent Than Nicotine

Chinese Companies Are Selling Vapes With Chemicals Potentially More Potent Than Nicotine

Earlier this year, I picked up a rather unfortunate habit: vaping. More specifically, I started smoking flavored vapes manufactured in China’s so-called “Vape Valley” and sold throughout the United States. Flavored nicotine vapes are largely illegal in the US, yet convenience stores and tobacco shops across the country have generated billions of dollars in sales from these products in recent years, despite periodic law enforcement seizures and efforts by the Food and Drug Administration to keep them off the market. More recently, Chinese manufacturers have found a new way to sidestep the law, escaping regulatory oversight altogether. Like many people, I assumed the only addictive chemical in these products was synthetic nicotine, which vape manufacturers have used for years to avoid FDA oversight. But after Congress closed that loophole in 2022—expanding regulation beyond tobacco-derived nicotine—Chinese manufactures began filling their vapes with little-studied chemicals that mimic nicotine’s effects, known as nicotine analogs. Because current regulations still narrowly define what counts as nicotine, Chinese companies have been able to sell nicotine analog vapes in the US without …

Wildfire smoke is like smoking ‘half a pack a day.’ Here’s how to protect yourself : NPR

Wildfire smoke is like smoking ‘half a pack a day.’ Here’s how to protect yourself : NPR

People wear masks in Chicago on Thursday to protect themselves from smoke from Canadian wildfires. City officials are encouraging people to remain inside as data shows Chicago having some of the worst air quality of any large city in the world. Scott Olson/Getty Images hide caption toggle caption Scott Olson/Getty Images A version of this story was originally published on Jan. 8, 2025. It has been updated to reflect the wildfires currently bringing smoke to the U.S. Smoke from wildfires in Canada and Minnesota prompted more air quality alerts Friday in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic U.S., as well as in the Upper Midwest. Michigan saw a statewide air quality advisory on Wednesday, and Minnesota’s air quality reached the hazardous “purple” alert level. The wildfire smoke is setting records in Wisconsin and turning skies orange in Vermont. And after a brief respite Friday morning, New York City will see more smoke. Exposure to wildfire smoke is a growing health problem across the country, as human-caused climate change increases the risk and intensity of wildfires and the smoke that …

Drivers told to take item out of car ‘every time’ or risk ‘explosion’ | UK | News

People are urged not to leave the item behind in their car (stock image) (Image: Getty) People across the UK are being urged not to leave one particular item inside their car every time they get out this week, as the third heatwave of the year arrives. The warning comes as temperatures are forecast to reach 30C or more over the coming days, and leaving the item in a car could risk an “explosion”. As warmer temperatures once again hit the UK, experts are urging drivers not to leave their vapes in the car. The significant change in temperature can lead to the vape battery exploding, causing a fire and resulting in £1,000s worth of damage and risk to health. Markus Lindblad, Head of Legal and External Affairs from Haypp, has shared the dangers of leaving vapes in a car as the weather starts to get warmer. He also explains what to do if your vape overheats. On a hot day, the inside of a parked car can become 30C to 40C warmer than the …

The Download: a smoking “endgame” and a new Elizabeth Bear story

As the parent of two little girls, I often think about how their childhood is different from mine. The seven-year-old is learning about AI at school. The five-year-old is given internet-based homework every week. And they are both absolutely repulsed by the idea of smoking. That was not the prevailing sentiment when I was young. Smoking was a central part of our culture. Which is why the UK’s recent passing of a generational sales ban on tobacco products feels like such a big deal. This is what’s described as an “endgame” approach. While many tobacco control strategies—such as taxation or gory imagery—aim to reduce consumption, policies like the UK’s are designed to eliminate it entirely. It’s a new approach, and no one knows whether it will work. But it’s an enticing prospect—and it’s starting to look a lot less radical. Find out why generational tobacco bans are gaining support. The FDA Ruled That ZYN Pouches Are Safer Than Cigarettes. That Doesn’t Mean They’re Safe

The FDA Ruled That ZYN Pouches Are Safer Than Cigarettes. That Doesn’t Mean They’re Safe

On June 30, the US Food and Drug Administration authorized 20 ZYN nicotine pouch products to carry a specific “modified risk” claim. This means that in the US, ZYN can now assert that “using ZYN instead of cigarettes puts you at a lower risk of mouth cancer, heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, emphysema and chronic bronchitis.” The decision does not mean nicotine pouches are safe or approved as smoking cessation products. It simply allows Swedish Match, which manufactures ZYN, to market certain products as a less harmful alternative for adults who completely switch away from cigarettes. The regulatory green light comes at a time wheN the nicotine-pouch boom has already reshaped the conversation about alternatives to smoking. Nicotine pouches have become one of the fastest-growing nicotine categories globally, fueled by their discreet nature, lack of smoke or vapor, and growing perceptions that they represent a “cleaner” form of nicotine consumption. According to a recent report by the World Health Organization, global retail sales of nicotine pouches reached 23.4 billion units in 2024, an increase of …

Polestar EVs are a smoking deal at k off now that they’re banned in the US

Polestar EVs are a smoking deal at $25k off now that they’re banned in the US

On the back of the Commerce Department’s incredibly stupid move to ban Polestar from selling EVs in the US, the Polestar 4 is now nearly the cheapest EV in America after a $25k discount, and the Polestar 3 has a pretty great discount applied too. Last week, the Commerce Department abruptly decided that Polestar, a Swedish company building electric cars in South Carolina (Polestar 3) and South Korea (Polestar 4) that run on American software made by Google, would be banned from selling cars in the US due to made-up cybersecurity concerns. It turns out, due to the company being owned by Geely Automotive, Commerce decided they shouldn’t be able to sell connected vehicles starting in the 2027 model year. Volvo, which is also owned by Geely but which sells both EVs and gas-powered vehicles, somehow avoided the same fate, as did Mercedes which has significant investment from China and is also not an EV-exclusive brand. But that dumb decision will at least make a few customers happy, as Polestar is now offering deep discounts …

Contributor: Alcohol should be marginalized like smoking

Contributor: Alcohol should be marginalized like smoking

Few substances are as deeply woven into everyday life as alcohol. It is a fixture at holiday celebrations, work-related social gatherings, sporting events, airports, and brunch or dinner tables. All demonstrate how deeply alcohol has become embedded in social customs and cultural traditions. Yet alcohol contributes to millions of deaths globally each year and is linked to cancer, liver disease, unintentional accidents, violence and, importantly, dependence and addiction. Despite this, the disconnect between alcohol’s cultural role and its serious health burden is striking. An estimated 2.3 billion people worldwide consume alcohol. As a physician working in addiction medicine, I regularly care for patients whose alcohol use affects nearly every organ system. It is often not until these patients end up admitted to the hospital that they learn the effects of alcohol on various parts of their body besides their liver. Newer evidence challenges assumptions about what was long considered “safe drinking.” Even moderate drinking carries risk and is not as harmless as people, including experts, once thought. Many people associate alcohol risk primarily with addiction …

Vaping after quitting smoking is linked to lung cancer

Vaping after quitting smoking is linked to lung cancer

Evidence is mounting that vaping comes with its own health risks DedMityay/Shutterstock. Smokers who give up cigarettes but still vape have more than a 50 per cent higher chance of developing lung cancer than those who stop altogether, according to a study of more than 4.5 million people. But the research also emphasises that using e-cigarettes to help you quit is safer than continuing to smoke. “The study adds to the rapidly growing body of evidence that e-cigarettes are absolutely not as low-risk as initially claimed,” says Becky Freeman at the University of Sydney, Australia, who wasn’t involved in the work. “[It’s] important that people who are trying to quit smoking try other safer [but] effective methods first, and only use e-cigarettes after exhausting other methods if they are unable to quit.” Just over 40 per cent of smokers in the UK who quit the habit in 2024 used e-cigarettes to help the process, and 20 per cent of ex-smokers were vaping a year or more after ditching the habit. While some argue e-cigarettes are …
