SINGAPORE: Commuters were evacuated from a train at Bukit Gombak station at about 11.40am after smoke was seen coming from underneath the carriage on Tuesday (Sep 15).  Preliminary checks suggest that the smoke may have been caused by a faulty brake, SMRT Trains President Lam Sheau Kai said in response to CNA queries.  “As a safety precaution, our staff promptly assisted all commuters to leave the train safely. The train was then withdrawn to the depot for further checks,” he said. “Train services continued to operate normally. There were no reports of commuters needing medical assistance.” Mr Ming Wing Cheong, 44, was one of the passengers asked to alight. He told CNA that he was “a little confused” as he was not told what was happening. “I saw smoke on the roof of one of the train cars,” Mr Ming said. He said that there was just an eight- to 10-minute delay while waiting for the next train. Source link

SMRT then said at around 7.50am that there was a “major delay” on the TEL and that there were no train services in both directions between Caldecott and Orchard stations. Shortly after 8am, the rail provider said there were no train services on the entire TEL – between Woodlands North and Bayshore stations – in both directions. In an update at around 8.50am, it said that services were “progressively resuming” from Woodlands North to Caldecott stations and from Orchard to Bayshore stations.  Train services between Caldecott and Orchard stations remained disrupted, it said in a Facebook post, adding that commuters can take alternative MRT lines or free bus services between Woodlands North and Marina Bay stations. At around 10.50am, SMRT said that train services had resumed between Caldecott and Orchard stations, but trains would be “travelling slower”. “Along this affected stretch, trains are being manually driven in both directions until the end of service,” Mr Lam said in an 11.10am update.
