Despite critical acclaim and early awards accolades for his starring role in Marty Supreme, Timothée Chalamet suffered his second best actor loss at a high-profile Oscar precursor award show in a week, losing the Actor Award to Sinners‘ Michael B. Jordan after losing the BAFTA Awards’ best actor prize to surprise winner Robert Aramayo of I Swear. Additionally, Marty Supreme overall was shut out at the Actor Awards. The film seemed like a strong performer among SAG-AFTRA voters when nominations were announced earlier this year, with the Actor Awards even nominating Odessa A’zion for best supporting actress, as part of the film’s three nominations, including for the top prize of best cast. Marty Supreme did, however, receive somewhat of a viral marketing moment with host Kristen Bell’s star-studded table tennis tournament, the winner of which received a trophy that resembled Chalamet. Because this Oscar season has been competitive from the get-go, we were expecting some surprises when nominations were announced—and boy, did we get them. The Oscar nominations 2026 included a slew of pleasantly unpredictable names in the acting categories (Delroy Lindo! Elle Fanning!) as well as several shake-ups in other tight races, like best director and even best picture. Sure, One Battle After Another and Sinners were expected to lead the pack when the final list was announced Thursday, just as they have all season. But Sinners made history by breaking the record for the most nominations ever received by a single movie, outstripping its top competitor (which only—“only”—got 13 total nods). No other commissioners will be present at the debate in Strasbourg, according to two officials. A vote on the motion, which is all but certain to fail, will take place on Thursday. During previous debates on censure motions, von der Leyen and her team of 26 commissioners turned out in force to project unity. This time, the message is different: the Commission is no longer playing ball. The shift reflects growing fatigue inside the Berlaymont at a parliamentary tool that was used three times against von der Leyen in the second half of 2025. Two of those motions were brought by the far right and one by the far left. All failed. Support from just 72 of the Parliament’s 720 lawmakers is needed to trigger a motion of censure, and many lawmakers from the center-right European People’s Party, the Socialists and Democrats, and the liberals of Renew say the ease of launching censure motions has diluted their impact.
