Soham killer Ian Huntley inquest suspended as brief hearing held | UK | News

An inquest hearing into the death of Soham killer Ian Huntley will follow criminal proceedings after a fellow inmate was charged with murder, a coroner has said. The 52-year-old died in the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle on March 7 after he was struck with a metal bar at HMP Frankland in Durham on February 26, a previous inquest hearing was told. The County Durham and Darlington Coroner Jeremy Chipperfield held a brief hearing in Crook on May 27 to find out about progress in the case. Listed under the name Ian Kevin Huntley, the hearing lasted less than five minutes. Coroner’s officer Bradley King said Durham Police had informed him that a defendant will appear in court on June 3 for a plea and trial preparation hearing. Mr King said more would be known about a potential trial date following that hearing. The coroner adjourned the inquest until September 15, when another mention hearing will be held. Ian Huntley will not be having a funeral service after his death. Huntley, 52, who died after he was allegedly attacked with a metal bar in a workshop at a maximum security jail on February 26. Huntley, who notoriously murdered two young girls in the quiet town of Soham, was blinded and left in a vegetative state after the assault. A decision was then made to cut off his life support machine on March 6 after a consultation with his mother, Lynda Richards, and he died the following day. Taxpayers could pay towards the costs of Ian Huntley’s cremation or funeral, unless his family makes alternative arrangements. The 52-year-old double murderer died in hospital on Saturday after allegedly being attacked by an unknown inmate at HMP Frankland. Huntley, who killed 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Soham, Cambridgeshire, in 2002, had been in a critical condition in hospital after being hit with a metal bar on 26 February. The former school caretaker was allegedly attacked in a workshop at the high-security jail in Durham. Police said earlier that their investigation into the circumstances of the incident is ongoing. It is a longstanding policy for the prison service to contribute up to £3,000 towards basic funeral expenses for any death in custody. The money is only permitted to be paid directly to a funeral director, and must be used to cover “reasonable costs” which include a “simple” coffin, a hearse, and cremation or burial fees. It cannot be used for a headstone, flowers or order of service sheets, or other expenses considered “non-reasonable”, such …

In his and the girls’ home town of Soham, no one wants to talk about his death, not even the vicar, not the girls’ parents. Fair enough; there is dignity in silent grief and the girls’ murders scarred a whole community. But there seems to be resentment at having to provide a funeral service for Ian Huntley; The Sun reports, in a spirit of grievance, that taxpayers may have to pay the £3,000 cost for a service and cremation if his family does not do so. Will there be coverage of the event, to make sure that no clergy officiate on the day, that his funeral is as soulless as possible? I say, if it is his mother’s wish, certainly he should have a Christian service. For in Christian terms, he has gone to the God who made us all, and hates nothing that he has made. Source link
