Tennessee Lawmakers to Vote on New US House Map Sought by Trump That Carves up Memphis

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Republican lawmakers in Tennessee forged ahead with a plan Thursday that could carve up a majority-Black congressional district, reshaping it to the GOP’s advantage as part of President Donald Trump’s strategy to try to hold on to a slim House majority in the November midterm elections. Protesters shouted “No Jim Crow” outside the House and Senate chambers as lawmakers convened to consider the legislation. Some protesters later were cleared out of the House chamber after interrupting debate with chants of “Who’s House? Our House!” The redistricting effort in Tennessee is one of several rapidly advancing plans in Southern states as Republicans try to leverage a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that weakened the federal Voting Rights Act. The court ruled that Louisiana relied too heavily on race when creating a second Black-majority House district as it attempted to comply with the federal law. The high court’s decision altered a decades-old understanding of the law, giving Republicans grounds to try to eliminate majority-Black districts that have elected Democrats. Louisiana has postponed its congressional …

Musk sought settlement with OpenAI before Oakland trial, filing shows

(Removes extraneous text in paragraph 3) May 4 : Elon Musk contacted OpenAI President Greg Brockman to gauge interest in a settlement two days before their high-stakes trial got underway in Oakland federal court, according to a new court filing. When Brockman suggested both sides drop their claims, Musk allegedly said, “By the end of this week, you and Sam will be the most hated men in America. If you insist, so it will be,” the filing, made on Sunday, stated. The exchange is the latest flashpoint in a lawsuit that has already grown combative inside the courtroom. The SpaceX founder testified on Thursday that he did not read the fine print of a 2017 term sheet related to OpenAI’s shift from a nonprofit to a for-profit structure, only its headline. Musk is suing OpenAI alleging that its shift to a for-profit structure betrayed its original nonprofit mission to develop safe AI technology for the public good and that the company’s leaders wrongfully profited from his charitable contributions. The SpaceX founder is seeking changes to …

Two suspects sought after attempted arson attack on synagogue | UK News

Police are hunting for two suspects following an attempted arson attack on a north London synagogue. The incident in Finchley is being treated as an antisemitic hate crime, police said. Two suspects, who were wearing dark clothing and balaclavas, approached the synagogue in Fallow Court Avenue shortly after midnight on Wednesday and threw two bottles, suspected to contain petrol, and a brick at the building. Neither bottle ignited and no damage was reported. There were no injuries. The matter was reported by staff to police at 8.30am. Officers are conducting urgent enquiries to trace the suspects. Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams said: “We are aware of the significant concern that this incident will cause in the community, particularly in the wake of the arson attack in Golders Green last month. “We are working with the affected synagogue and continuing to meet with community leaders. “I would like to reassure the community that we take incidents of this nature extremely seriously and detectives are working urgently to identify the suspects.” He also urged any witnesses or …

The Vedanta School of Philosophy That Sought to Break the Cycle of Birth, Death, and Rebirth

The Vedanta School of Philosophy That Sought to Break the Cycle of Birth, Death, and Rebirth

Summary Vedānta, meaning “the end of the Vedas,” is a philosophy focused on God-realization to break the rebirth cycle. Its three main sub-schools are Advaita (non-dualism), Viśiṣṭādvaita (qualified non-dualism), and Dvaita (dualism). Advaita Vedānta teaches the individual soul (Ātman) is ultimately identical to the ultimate reality (Brahman). In contrast, Dvaita Vedānta argues the soul and God (Brahman) are eternally distinct and separate realities. Vedānta’s concepts parallel debates in modern Western philosophy, especially regarding monism, pluralism, and consciousness. Show more   Vedānta literally translates as “the end of the Vedas,” and it has never been conceived as a single doctrine. Vedānta concerns the realization of God in our world, thereby cutting across the core ideas of Hinduism, such as Atman, Brahman, and attaining salvation by breaking the shackles of the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. Nonetheless, it would be wrong to consider Vedānta as a contribution to a purely theistic cause because this particular darśana offered a radical and transformative view of consciousness. And what would Western philosophy be without the debates about consciousness? I guess a lot shorter, and with far less existential dread.   …

The Yoga School of Philosophy That Sought Liberation From Suffering

The Yoga School of Philosophy That Sought Liberation From Suffering

Summary Philosophical Yoga is the cessation of the mind’s fluctuations, aiming to calm restless thoughts for ultimate clarity. It distinguishes between pure consciousness (puruṣa) and matter (prakṛti) to explain the root of human suffering. Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras codified Yoga as a formal school of Indian philosophy around the 3rd-4th century AD. The Eightfold Path (aṣṭāṅga yoga) is a structured guide from moral discipline and postures to deep meditative absorption. Yoga’s view of consciousness parallels modern philosophy’s “hard problem,” exploring how subjective awareness arises in a physical world. Show more   In the West, “yoga” is synonymous with fitness studios, wellness retreats, and mindfulness apps. However, in this article, we will cover Yoga as one of the six classical schools, or darśanas, of Indian philosophy. Closely allied with Sāṃkhya, it shares much of its metaphysical framework while adding a program of practice. Within this darśana, the human mind was seen as restless and constantly spinning with thoughts, until it was calmed through disciplined meditative and physical practice, allowing puruṣa to shine forth in its pure form. Liberation from suffering and the vicious cycle of birth, …

A tap on the shoulder, a bank card theft. Alleged ATM scam duo sought

An ATM con that involves some snooping, some acting and some sleight-of-hand is being carried out across Southern California, police say. And the victims may be the least able to spot the scam. The Los Angeles Police Department is calling on the public for help in identifying a pair of alleged scammers who officials say have been targeting elderly bank customers for at least a month. Here’s how investigators say the scheme plays out. One suspect watches the victim as they enter their PIN on the ATM keypad. The same suspect drops a $20 bill behind the victim, then taps them on the shoulder to alert them that they appear to have dropped some money. Police released photos of two suspects, including a woman, in a series of ATM thefts. (Los Angeles Police Department) While the victim is retrieving the money, a second suspect quickly removes the ATM card from the machine and replaces it with a counterfeit card that closely resembles the original. The victim unknowingly takes the fake card, unaware that their actual …

Ai Weiwei Says London’s Royal Academy Sought to Eject Him After Post–October 7 Tweet about Jews

Ai Weiwei Says London’s Royal Academy Sought to Eject Him After Post–October 7 Tweet about Jews

In a new interview with The Guardian in advance of his forthcoming book On Censorship, artist Ai Weiwei talked about experiencing censorship not just in his native China but also in the West—including an incident involving his membership in London’s Royal Academy. After chronicling some of his storied challenges and acts of defiance against China’s communist regime, Ai told writer Lanre Bakare he feels “the same kind of surveillance, same kind of censorship in the west.” As Bakare recounts, “Pressed for an example, he tells me a story about the Royal Academy in London, an institution that gave him a landmark exhibition in 2015 and made him an honorary member in 2011 following his detainment in China. In November 2023, an exhibition of new works to be shown at the Lisson Gallery was pulled after he posted a tweet that began: ‘The sense of guilt around the persecution of the Jewish people has been, at times, transferred to offset the Arab world.’ The tweet was deleted, with the artist telling journalists his show had ‘effectively …
