Trump bought Axon stock before ICE sought $220 million Taser deal

President Donald Trump bought as much as $5 million in shares of Axon Enterprise — maker of Tasers, body cameras and policing software — two weeks before Immigration and Customs Enforcement sought a five-year, $220 million contract that experts told CNBC appeared tailored to the company’s weapons. On Feb. 10, Trump purchased between $1 million and $5 million worth of Axon stock, according to federal disclosures he filed in May. On Feb. 24, ICE posted a notice seeking roughly 17,800 new Tasers, along with unlimited cartridges and training. The White House has said Trump’s assets are held in a trust managed by his children and that Trump’s investments are managed by independent third-party firms, not Trump or his family. “There are no conflicts of interest,” spokesperson Anna Kelly told CNBC, calling the scrutiny a “tired narrative” pushed by Democrats. Trump’s disclosures with the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, made public May 14, show more than 3,700 transactions, with the total amount for each listed as a range rather than an exact figure. Under federal law, …

Trump’s latest comments in a post on Truth Social on Saturday deepen a personal row between Trump and the right-wing Italian leader, who was long viewed as one of the US president’s top allies in Europe. Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list Trump had initially told Italian media on Thursday that Meloni “begged” him for a picture at the G7 summit in France, saying he agreed only because he “felt sorry for her”. Meloni responded that she was “stunned” by the “made-up” claim. But Trump fired back in his Saturday post, saying the Italian prime minister had asked “over and over” for a photograph. He accused her of trying to repair relations with Washington …

China has long sought to control women’s bodies. Increasingly, they’re making their own choices | China

Ever since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, women’s bodies have been the business of the state. In the 1950s, labour for state-controlled work units was organised according to women’s menstrual cycles. Then for decades, there was the one-child policy. Across vast swathes of the country the policy was enforced with a brutal severity. As well as fines for additional children, women were forced to have abortions and subjected to forced sterilisations. Now, women in China are facing new forms of pressure from the government as China battles a fresh challenge – a falling birth rate. Women are under pressure to devote their bodies to childbearing as the government tries to encourage more pregnancies. Increasingly, women are pushing back in ways that weren’t possible in the past, while the painful legacy of the one-child policy continues to echo and reshape expectations around family today. “For people of my generation, born at the end of the 1980s, everyone is from a one-child family,” says Guligo Jia, 36-year-old filmmaker based in Beijing. “Nowadays, …

Impeachment Sought Against Federal Judge Over Alleged Sex in Chambers, Lying to Investigators

Impeachment Sought Against Federal Judge Over Alleged Sex in Chambers, Lying to Investigators

ATLANTA (AP) — Two congressional Republicans from Georgia have introduced impeachment resolutions against a federal judge in Atlanta who was disciplined after an investigation found she had sex with a police officer in her chambers, attended a partisan political event and lied to investigators looking into the alleged misconduct. U.S. Reps. Clay Fuller and Andrew Clyde filed the resolutions against U.S. District Judge Eleanor Ross. Clyde wrote Tuesday on social media that Ross’ “deeply disturbing actions prove she is incapable of displaying integrity or impartiality. She must be impeached and removed from the bench.” It is up to the House Judiciary Committee to decide whether to start impeachment proceedings against Ross. Federal judges are appointed for life and can only be removed from the bench through impeachment. A person who answered the phone in the judge’s chambers Tuesday afternoon said Ross had no comment. Ross was nominated to the Northern District of Georgia in January 2014 by then-President Barack Obama, a Democrat, and she was confirmed by the Senate in November of that year. She …

Amber Alert issued for missing girl, 5, after mother found slain. Father sought by police

Authorities are searching for a 5-year-old girl who was allegedly abducted by her father after the girl’s mother was killed in Los Angeles. Officers on Monday found a woman’s body inside a home in the 2600 block of South Alsace Avenue in West Adams, according to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department. Authorities said a preliminary investigation revealed she died as a result of violence but did not disclose further details. The woman’s identity was not released. Police described her husband, Ruben Fregoso, 40, as a person of interest in her death. Fregoso allegedly fled with the couple’s daughter, Daleyza Fregoso. He made statements that suggested he intended to leave the country, according to investigators. The pair were last seen Sunday around 4 a.m. near Ferndale Street and Alsace Avenue, according to an Amber Alert issued Monday. Investigators initially said they were traveling in a white 2019 Land Rover Discovery, but later said the vehicle had been located in a shopping center near the border with Mexico. Man sought court protection from wife, claiming she beat him up, took his money and accused him of affairs

SINGAPORE: A man sought multiple court orders including a personal protection order (PPO) and a no-contact order against his wife, claiming she had been beating him up, poked his private parts with needles and accused him of having affairs. A family court did not fully accept the man’s accounts of what happened and instead found that he had failed to show why a PPO should be granted for reasons including the fact that the couple now lived apart. According to a judgment published on Friday (May 22), the man sought a PPO, a no-contact order, a counselling order and a mandatory treatment order against his wife. The hearing was fixed before Magistrate Soh Kian Peng on Apr 16 this year, but the wife did not turn up despite reminders about the trial. The reason she gave for her absence was that she was receiving medical treatment in China and could not travel to Singapore for the trial, an explanation the magistrate rejected due to lack of a valid medical certificate. The woman asked for the …

Tennessee Lawmakers to Vote on New US House Map Sought by Trump That Carves up Memphis

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Republican lawmakers in Tennessee forged ahead with a plan Thursday that could carve up a majority-Black congressional district, reshaping it to the GOP’s advantage as part of President Donald Trump’s strategy to try to hold on to a slim House majority in the November midterm elections. Protesters shouted “No Jim Crow” outside the House and Senate chambers as lawmakers convened to consider the legislation. Some protesters later were cleared out of the House chamber after interrupting debate with chants of “Who’s House? Our House!” The redistricting effort in Tennessee is one of several rapidly advancing plans in Southern states as Republicans try to leverage a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that weakened the federal Voting Rights Act. The court ruled that Louisiana relied too heavily on race when creating a second Black-majority House district as it attempted to comply with the federal law. The high court’s decision altered a decades-old understanding of the law, giving Republicans grounds to try to eliminate majority-Black districts that have elected Democrats. Louisiana has postponed its congressional …

Musk sought settlement with OpenAI before Oakland trial, filing shows

(Removes extraneous text in paragraph 3) May 4 : Elon Musk contacted OpenAI President Greg Brockman to gauge interest in a settlement two days before their high-stakes trial got underway in Oakland federal court, according to a new court filing. When Brockman suggested both sides drop their claims, Musk allegedly said, “By the end of this week, you and Sam will be the most hated men in America. If you insist, so it will be,” the filing, made on Sunday, stated. The exchange is the latest flashpoint in a lawsuit that has already grown combative inside the courtroom. The SpaceX founder testified on Thursday that he did not read the fine print of a 2017 term sheet related to OpenAI’s shift from a nonprofit to a for-profit structure, only its headline. Musk is suing OpenAI alleging that its shift to a for-profit structure betrayed its original nonprofit mission to develop safe AI technology for the public good and that the company’s leaders wrongfully profited from his charitable contributions. The SpaceX founder is seeking changes to …
