The US-based Cuban defendants are accused of packing a boat with weapons and heading toward Cuba in hopes of destabilizing the government in Havana. The coast guard shot and killed four other people aboard the boat, which came within one nautical mile of the Caribbean island’s shores in the February 25 shootout. The defendants will be “remanded into provisional detention,” the attorney general’s office said in a statement. Cuban officials said the boat, registered in the United States, was carrying firearms of various calibers, including 14 rifles, 11 pistols and nearly 13,000 rounds of ammunition. Cuba has named the four men who were shot dead by its military as the authorities in Havana accused them of plotting an attempted coup. Those killed in what the Cuban government said was a coup were named as Pavel Alling Pena, Michel Ortega Casanova, Ledian Padron Guevara, and Hector Duani Cruz Correa. Cuba said its military killed four Cuban residents of the U.S. who were on a speedboat that entered its territorial waters Wednesday, which the country’s Interior Ministry called a “foiled armed infiltration.” The speedboat, which was registered in Florida, “was carrying 10 armed individuals who, according to preliminary statements from those detained, intended to carry out an infiltration for terrorist purposes,” the Interior Ministry said in a statement. “Assault rifles, handguns, improvised explosive devices (Molotov cocktails), bulletproof vests, telescopic sights, and camouflage uniforms were seized,” the ministry said.
