It was all Chris Martin’s idea. During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the Coldplay frontman called Hugh Evans, the CEO of Global Citizen, for whom he curates the Global Citizen Festival, with something new to pitch. “Wouldn’t it be incredible,” Evans recalls Martin saying, “if we could do the first-ever halftime show for the World Cup?” Evans agreed, and connected with FIFA president Gianni Infantino at the organization’s headquarters in Switzerland to sell him on Martin’s plan. He didn’t need to. Infantino had already had a similar idea—and was a Coldplay fan. “So he actually had already independently decided that he wanted to work with Coldplay and that he wanted to achieve this dream,” Evans says. The result of those conversations, set to take the pitch during Sunday’s World Cup final between Spain and Argentina at New York New Jersey Stadium, is a massive but just 11-minute-long show featuring Justin Bieber, Madonna, BTS, and Shakira. The protests ​were coordinated by HumansFirst, co-founded by a former leader of the modern-day Tea Party. She compares growing opposition to data centers to the right-wing populist movement that emerged in 2009 to protest what it saw ‌as excessive taxation and government overreach. Protesters rallied against what HumansFirst ‌calls the “unaccountable” buildout of data centers and “unacceptable infringement on our liberty.” In Fredericksburg, Virginia, one young man carried a sign reading, “We thrive on water not data.” In Atlanta, a small knot of protesters ⁠wielded signs reading, “Georgia never voted ⁠for hyperscale AI data centers.” Nationwide and city-specific counts of protesters were not immediately available, said Chris Barron, president ​at Right Turn Strategies, who is handling press relations for HumansFirst. CHALON-SUR-SAONE, France (AP) — Belgian rider Tim Merlier earned another stage win at the Tour de France while several riders fell as they sprinted to the line Thursday. Defending champion Tadej Pogacar avoided the crash and kept his significant overall lead over second-place Jonas Vingegaard after 12 stages. It was Merlier’s third stage win on this year’s Tour and sixth of his career. Dutch rider Olav Kooij finished second and Jasper Philipsen of Belgium was third. With riders fighting for position on the home straight, Colombian Fernando Gaviria went down after clipping the wheel of another cyclist and fell to his left, bringing Norwegian rider Soeren Waerenskjold — Wednesday’s stage winner — down with him.
